Dawn Richard - Goldenheart
It's really good to see a genuine contender for album of the year coming out so early isn't it? For those of you who don't know this album is very high on the Alt R&B that's hot right about now except it's isn't wishy washy like many of the others, it maintains and edge, whilst being very melodic and atmospheric.
Very good album, any other fans?

it maintains an edge*]
I didn't care much for the Armor On EP
Giving it a go now though
I warn you
it is too long, but it avoids being front/back loaded which surprised me from an album of this length.
no one?
on my third listen and think its utterly fantastic
It's out?
Fuck yes.
Loved the Armor On EP so much.
This and a new Janelle Monae album or two this year. Good times.
That was wonderful.
For a 65+ minute album it flew by too.
Anyone noticed that both The Archandroid and this finish with that same Debussy piece (Clair de Lune?)??
Does P. Diddy have some connections?
Nah this is all her.
I know she's done it independently
just wondered whether wheels might've been greased ;)
What's the policy on sampling/covering classical pieces in songs? Same as anything else?
Yeah not sure,
about either really.
I like the Armor EP
and now that, This is going to be difficult to beat this year.
We might be looking at a Dawn vs Janelle face off!
But they're nothing alike.
I guess they sit in the same part of the musical spectrum and share fans
but one is a lot more electronic then the other and less bombastic
of course
but still making music in the R'n B genre - could we call this Neo Soul?
What they've got in common is that I both much prefer them to Beyonce and co - Ca va sans dire.
idk
its weird to me a little, dont want to get into genre tag wars you know? Thats no fun for anyone. Dawn is much more house based musically while Janelle is more throwback soul? They're both r&b yeah though yeah, along w Beyonce & co (pop r&b).
Hi, I'm just going to bump this thread once a month to let you all know whether any other release has come close to it yet this year.
...no. Not even remotely close to it. Still sounds, fresh, exciting, engrossing, adventurous, addictive, focussed, intense.
Fucking magic.
I havent said anything about it yet
cos Ive been giving it time to soak in. Wasn't really loving it as much as her EP from last year or the Ditty Dirty Money album based on early listens, but I feel like it will grow on me. Its a little long. That stretch from Pretty Wicked Things through 86 is a pretty incredible run. Frequency is probably the highlight so far.
The production on this album is 100x
better than Armor On, I will admit. The sound on that AO is very compressed, the bass sounds really bad in partic. But the new one seems to have cured those issues.
This is really really great.
But lets not call it 'alt' r&b yeah? It just and r&b album and there aint nothing wrong with that.
I love how restrained, classy and stylistically consistent it all sounds. Armour On was a bit of a mixed bag with tracks that were clearly just aping other artists. With this it really feels like she has her own sound.
Its a testament to how interesting the songwriting that such a long album of all essentially mid-paced tunes doesn't drag.
yeah
wtf is alt really? Good engrossing stuff though. Still trying to get to grips with it.
Listened to this non-stop for the last week.
Incredible. +1 hour and no filler. Doubt I'll hear a better R&B record this year.
Hadn't even heard of this until I saw this thread
Shame on me. For fans of Monae you say? I'm interested.
Another month on.
Nope, nothing's touched it.
Frightened Rabbit/Widowspeak/Local Natives/MBV have had a go, but not got anywhere near it.
I listen to it at least once of every other day and it doesn't feel tired at all.
I think Buke & Gase and Hookworms have surpassed it for me
but it's still way up there, that Frightened Rabbit album was shit
Hookworms is on my list.
I've got a (totally unfounded) feeling that my reaction to it is going to be the same as Cloud Nothings last year. (i.e. Meh.)
Buke & Gase - paint me a word picture?
Deerhoof meets Yeah Yeah Yeahs (I don't like making comparisons like this but it's easy)
it's disjointed noisy guitar pop with female vox, it's very catchy and moorish.
Here is a song btw

sold.
I shouldn't have been so blunt about the FR album
I just got hurt by the last effort and this kicked me when I was down, had so much potential :(
The second half is much stronger than the first.
It's no Midnight Organ Fight, but if they ever surpass that i'll be damned impressed.
Well, well, well.
Paramore and Justin Timberlake have both made a good fist of it, but neither quite match it.
1. Dawn Richard - GoldenHeart
2. Paramore - Paramore
3. Justin Timberlake - 20/20
4. m b v
5. Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer - Child Ballads
POP!
