where Test Icicles have ended up
Don't think anyone could've predicted what they'd individually go on to do.
I remember seeing them just kind of take the piss out of the audience when I saw them supporting DFA1979 in 2005ish, half-performing over a minidisc backing track. it was pretty funny but never wouldve expected -
Dev Hynes would go on to co-write an EP with Beyonce's younger sister and perform with her on Fallon:

Sam Mehram/Meringue doing hip ariel pink-ish projects like this:

and then the other one apparently produces for Palma Violets/The Vaccines

Test Icicles
'the other one' (Rory Attwell)
has produced several of my favourite records of the last couple of years and put out a pretty sweet album called Old Volcanoes under the name Warm Brains
*Raary Decihells
He runs a really sweet recording studio on a boat.
Hardly doing badly for himself.
I was going to say what a ridiculous rip off of Ariel Pink that is
but then I saw that it was uploaded in 2010.
Ariel was around in 2010, of course, but I don't think he was very well known, was he?
Either way I like that track.
Before Today was released in June 2010, either way it seems
unlikely that he ripped off Ariel Pinks style. Just had similar ideas at the time.
Which one was it that started the band RATATAG?
that was his 'breakthrough'
but he'd been releasing albums for years before then including a whole bunch on the label Animal Collective run
Yeah I've got a couple of them.
Ariel Pinks Haunted Graffiti, House Arrest and another that I can't remember it's name.
Before Today was his first band album, wasn't it. Admittedly it was my first Ariel Pink album - explored his back catalogue afterwards....well, some of it, anyway..
pink's been doing it for a decade
sounds like a rip-off to me., fun though.
he released a pretty cool collabroation with LA Vampires
on Not Not Fun a few years ago.

at the cockpit?
were so hilariously bad
yeah.
remember that night cos it was when liverpool won the champions league final. remember coming out and seeing them lifting the cup on the screens in the hotel bar opposite
seems an age ago
i mainly remember someone shouting out 'bloc party' at them
to which they replied 'nah, we're ROCK party'
i went to their last gig at the astoria
and lost my shoes
I went to that gig too.
I have never been bribed to go to the bar so many times in one evening.
saw then at southampton joiners in 2005
good fun it was
Rory Atwell is a fucking great guy
who does things quietly with passion and conviction. Warm Brains and all the other bands he plays in are great, he produces great records and you can regularly find him in small gigs in East London perfecting the sound for bands he works with / likes. Proper good guy who loves music. If you see him around buy that man a drink.
Don't mach care for Hynes at all, I think he's a cultural prostitute in fact... Thoroughly dislike it when he is thrust into my attention by some suck ass magazine or whatever.
A cultural prostitute
A CULTURAL PROSTITUTE
Actually, this is inaccurate...
I just think he's a bit of a leech. Its all a bit shallow the way he picks something up and attampts to just become it by buying all the necessary clothing and enlisting the correct contacts in order to make it happen. Then suddenly its all 'Hynes goes country', 'Hynes works with Solange', 'Hynes goes 8os streetstyle', 'Hynes writes a comic'... It just feels like he's everything that's wrong with how the world works...
I dunno
it's just like any other internet-honed twentysomething, isn't it? People jump from influence to influence. It's that kind of tumblr mindset made real. At the root of it all, he's a really good songwriter, whichever genre he decides he's into.
Sorry Dev, sorry everybody.
Your probably right, as someone who likes music though I'm not into it. I like Warm Brains etc an awful lot though, think all that stuff comes from the right place.
I tell you what I feel really bad every time I post something on here! Ha.
you're 100% correct innit
Hi Rory!
I believe Dev Hynes co-wrote Everything is Embarrassing by Sky Ferreira.
One of the best songs from last year.
article from clash magazine
about Rory Attwell's recording studio

and here's is recording studio info with lots of pictures of the things he's worked on
http://www.brattwellrecordings.com/
hah was just about to post this
If I was in a band I'd definitely want to record on a boat, bit of a no brainer really
I bizarrely saw them support Alkaline Trio at Brixton
And they got booed off stage. Interestingly, people were quite open about them, but they were terrible and acting like dicks until the crowd snapped on them
Does anybody know whether Sam Mehram actually is Sam Merengue
of Matrix Metals, Explorers, Outer Limits Recordings, Wingdings etc? I know that Wikipedia says he is, but apart from this haven't been able to find anything that suggests the whole Sam Mehram / Sam Merengue / Outer Limits Recordings thing isn't a James Ferraro prank.
If it is true though and Sam Merengue is a real person and I've just credited all of his work to James Ferraro, then I'm doing him a massive disservice because all of the records he's put out are properly amazing.
Would really like to know if anybody can shed any light...
Same person
just a slightly different name for whatever reason.
they used to live in the flat i lived in in dalston
got all their post
CSB
Dancing on Pegs is a fucking tune
Evidently, Dev has become the iron chef of pounding vaj

Sage advice...
Sam Mehran produced this last year.
One of my tracks of the year.
