Warp's Artificial Intelligence series is 20 today*
Polygon Window - Surfing On Sine Waves was released on 11th January 1993, the first of 6 albums that launched a few careers and kick-started a new genre of electronic music.
(I'm still struggling with the term IDM but it seems to have stuck...)
So, what do these albums still mean to you?
They changed my listening habits for good and I still go back to most of them each year. There's a classic or two in there.
We might as well do this, too:
Bytes > Ginger > Incunabula = Surfing On Sine Waves > Dimension Intrusion > Electro-Soma
I've said this in another thread already, but I'd love DiS to run an article on the series, Warp or any of the artists who contributed.
* Yeah, I'm conveniently ignoring the fact that the Artificial Intelligence compilation came out in July 1992.

Jay-Z
I've written a review of Surfing On Sine Waves, if anyone is interested.

Cheers.
Incunabula changed my life
I still remember hearing it for the first time and thinking, wow, techno can actually be very very good. From that point on I just hoovered up Warp stuff. Bytes, Ginger, Surfing on Sine Waves, Virtual State...
nice to hear Virtual State get a mention
Top album that...
Bike, Eggshell and 444 are fantastic.
I still consider Incunabula as Autechre's best album
Too bad they gradually got rid of melody on latter releases...
What's the last Autechre album that you enjoy?
I agree that they became less melodious, although I think they buried them rather than getting rid of them.
I had exactly the same experience with every new Autechre album from Amber onwards. I hated it at first, stuck with it and the melodies started to emerge and the beats started to make sense.
Still can't decide on my favourite but it's not Incunabula, nor is it Amber anymore (was for years). Probably between Tri Repetae, Chiastic Slide and LP5. Stuff after that... I'm still working on: 'difficult' albums, eh?
I remember a good interview with this lot in Mixmag
and it was just perfect timing for me as I was just really getting into the more home listening type of Electronic music [also Orbital, The Orb, FSOL etc] so this stuff is massive influence on me. The big album for me though was Amber [and also FSOL`s Lifeforms] I had it on tape and I played the hell of it for ages, I thought it was really beautiful, mysterious and futuristic.
90s were a golden age for electronic music
So many amazing albums/singles were released then
I feel old...
the big album for me was Seefeel Quique, I can remember getting it from plastic factory on vinyl (which I don't have any more all sold a few years ago) in Birmingham and listening to 'Climatic...' and was blown away!
I was really into HIA/orbital/FSOL/Ultramarine etc and was going to HIA's Oscillate nights in Brum a lot.
My real gateway albums were The Shamen En-tact and Orbital Green/Brown, myself and a few friends being really into them and Tangerine Dream/Kautrock and following the trail from there
Oh for the days before chillout became a dirty word...
Show your love for Black Dog Productions - Bytes
Best album of the AI series, best album The Black Dog ever did and probably in my top 5 albums of all time. And it turns 20 today.
Also one of the most 'human' techno records ever, I reckon.
My favourite tracks are 3/4 Heart and Carceres Ex Novum. How about you?
Clan (Mongul Hordes)
In my top 10 electronic tracks of all time. Absolutely love it, and Bytes is probably still my favourite Warp release of all time.
It's very good
I think the first section of Burial's Loner was influenced by it.

About 54 seconds in. It might be coincidence though, I guess.
Clan (Mongol Hordes) for anyone else who wants to compare:

1:12 being the most obvious place to jump to.
