London sold out in a couple of minutes
Hope they don't move to a bigger venue - the ICA is a perfect venue for them.
aye i saw that
reckon it'll get bumped up in london for definite, got tickets for glasgow anyway
That is mental!
2 singles and a London venue sold out in minutes?
aereogramme certainly never did that! ;)
True, but their discography speaks for itself ;)
i fucking love aereogramme
but i was meaning it must be weird for ian now given how long they slogged for without much real recognition!
woah woah
Aereogramme guy is in Chvrches?!? That is so cool
+ Dok from The Twilight Sad
supergroup or what?
Wasn't Dok also the Aereogramme touring keyboardist / screamer?
Screaming where necessary after Craig B started having voice problems?
yeah he was indeed
yeah, I know what you mean
such a shame to see such an excellent band call it a day because they simply couldn't afford it anymore.
it's only 350 capacity
from what i can remember. been so long since i even saw a gig listed at the ica...
Nearly forgot this was going on sale today
Got tickets for Glasgow, looking forward to it!
It's a pity that the Glasgow gig's that date
It's the same night as Sigur Rós.
Chvrches
Not Cvrches, or is this another I Clavdivs inspired band?
i don't get the hype
they just sound like a Scottish Purity Ring. i like them, it's just that there has been loads of music like this released over the last three-four years, so i don't understand why stuff like this is getting loads of hype now. Same goes for Purity Ring. Still, both bands are quite good so who even cares? (well, me obviously, but I shouldn't)
I'm starting to feel bad for them already...
This can't bode well. Way too much hype - perhaps it could be deserved once they've been a band a little longer, but jumping to the 'top' like this is usually a quick death sentence.
exactly, how are they going to progress with that much hype and only playing a few gigs
Well none of these are big venues
The Mother We Share got a lot of exposure so it's not like they just sold out a bunch of venues with a capacity of thousands off the back of one single. And the whole 'Scottish Purity Ring' thing is fine if you don't consider the fact that Lauren's voice is one of the biggest selling points of the band (IMO) - just because bands have similar sounds doesn't mean they have to be as good as each other.
I'm just glad I managed to catch them at their free show in Angel, they're pretty great live and I'm very much looking forward to the album.
right people, place and time
cynical music industry
Taken from POP COP comments section last year about Cvches "hype"
Nails it on the head for me
"I have to agree i find the background to all of this pretty unappealing to be honest. Fair play, ‘Lies’ is a good song. That said, so are plenty of other songs written by new bands in Scotland….most of whom aren’t lucky enough to have umpteen helping hands to get them and their music into the spotlight.
So one member is from The Twilight Sad, another is ex-Aereogramme, and the third is a List journalist. There are a number of bonuses within this, namely being managed by Temper Trap manager Campbell McNeil (who also happens to be ex-Aereogramme….), and the guarantee of favorable press on the pages of a notoriously hard to please publication.
And lets be honest, how many bands have the luxury of getting to test a venue for two days prior to their gig ? How many bands would get the chance to play The Art School off the back of no profile ?
Would Churches be getting any of this hype had they been just another unknown Scottish band with a great song ? Absolutely not. Would i have respected them more if they had done it all off their own back ? Absolutely."
So what you're saying is
Toiling away in a band for years and being a big part of the Scottish music scene is basically the same as being in some manufactured pop band, just because your band didn't suddenly appear out of thin air with no back story? Wtf?
Dreadful logic
If they've all worked hard enough individually over the years to make some 'important contacts' or whatever, then that's entirely fair play to them. The songs more than stand up to it.
it's mostly jealousy
post some songs by these 'other bands'
that are better than The Mother We Share.
You were asked this before and could not do so.
here:
http://greatcop.bandcamp.com/
i'll take the lack of a response as an answer that I'm right
thanks!
Shit, all this time I never put 2+2 together, you play with Iain Bethel don't you?
Saw you guys support Tellison, good show as well. Probably be coming to that Quiet Night In gig too.
yup that's right!
that should be a good one, we're also playing with MAZES the night before at at Bar Bloc at the end of the month
yes, but surely the assertion of Mr The boat is that it's not just the songs that have got them where they are.
He is alluding to some weird west coast bias/nepotism interface to propel them from "who?" to "wowzer, bestest band eva".
I'm not entirely agreeing but, you know, just for reference, i think that's his argument.
I'm finding the quality of song/level of attention equation a bit off.
You like them, so you are not.
that comment is the type of moany "why not me?!!" wank
that's being going on in scotland for years, as said above and below both "lies" and "the mother we share" are two absolutely cracking tunes and Dok and Iain at least have played their fair share of toilet venues to have served whatever "indie" apprenticeship the original poster seems to be alluding to
also "the art school" put on bands every single week, there's no restrictive booking policy that i'm aware of and loads of bands with zero profile get booked there
How many bands would get the chance to play The Art School off the back of no profile ?
Just to check, do you realise that The Art School is no longer the big venue in the Art School's union that had a pretty big capacity. The Art School now is the basement of what used to be Capitol, in the Beresford building. It's tiny!
For Manchester it says start time is 7:30pm
my last train home is at 11.20pm. Will they have finished before then do you think? I don't go to many gigs so not sure how long they last/how many support acts there are etc
pretty sure most curfews are at 11, so you should be alright
presuming you're getting the train from Piccadilly or Victoria rather than Oxford Road!
That's what I was hoping to hear
cheers
yeah pretty sure the ruby lounge's curfew is 11
don't think i've been to a gig there that finished later than half 10
then again it is properly shit for gigs
Don't get the appeal yet
heard the two singles and they are so fucking poppy. Maybe I'm missing something. We'll see.
that is the appeal
pop music is the new pop music
Is pop music killing pop music?
I can't wait for the Bristol date.
Club night after has Cyril Hahn playing
So...
they were great in Manchester last night. They did a few songs that I hadn't heard before, one possibly called 'Night Sky' (?)
Did anyone from here go?
I'm off to tomorrow night's gig in London.
Really looking forward to seeing them and Conquering Animal Sound's new stuff.
Is that what the support band were called?
A bearded guy and a girl? They only announced their name without using a microphone, not massively helpful.
Yeah, their new album's out in a few weeks on Chemikal Underground.
The last one was great: http://drownedinsound.com/releases/15944/reviews/4141953
pretty sure their new album was out yesterday
the singer from Chvrches mentioned it in between songs last night and they had some on the merch stand
unless that was a single and I misheard?
single I think
Yeah, it is the single
just bought from iTunes. I now wish I had got to the gig earlier to see them, I really like it. I hadn't heard anything from them before.
Just back from Bristol gig
Having heard two songs previously, I'm blown away. Too cheesy to say "new favourite band"?
Manchester gig
I thought they were great - nothing terribly exciting or original about them but just a really catchy pop band. The singer's really cute so a few magazine covers for her and a smattering of their songs used to trail shitty BBC and ITV programmes and they'll be huge.
That was awesome.
I picked up the CAS album too, lovely stuff.
A special slow handclap to the guy at the front trying to film the whole set on his iPad. If you're reading this, I gave you half a dozen songs, but I'm sorry, I wasn't going to let you spoil the whole of the gig for the people stood behind you.
good on you
Thanks.
I few people expressed their gratitude to me afterwards, and I kind of thought, well, why didn't you ask him to stop then?
Cowards.
haha Jamie from CAS got involved in this on twitter
and the dude with the ipad replied being like "but I really liked you guys"
to be honest i am certain you'd be within the justice system
for anyone using the camera on an ipad.
there was a fella at the Manchester gig
who was taking loads of pictures with an iPad, I don't get it. I'd be too embarrassed.
We were quite near the front,
but still had plenty of space. Shame they've dropped 'I Would Die 4 U'.
Not sure if they were industry types or just pervy men,
but half the crowd seemed to be middle-aged blokes.
Made the show feel a bit weird.
they're the same thing yo
MUSIC INDUSTRY BURN
Sort of J A G
photos from the ICA show
http://thefourohfive.com/review/article/in-photos-chvrches-ica-london-27-02-13
all the songs I've heard so far are great.
My only concern is that there doesn't seem to be enough bottom end. It all sounds a bit tinny especially with a female singer.
