...it reminds me quite a lot of Robert Wyatt. Both in the timbre of his voice and the melody. Sounds cool though on a brief listen.
There's more of a crack/tremble in his voice now, rather like latterday Scott Walker, though unlike Scott he still seems to take himself seriously (this shouldn't be interpreted as a criticism of SW btw). The last minute or so is absolutely beautiful.
I'm just really happy to have him here, tbh - when I were a lad in the 90s we got a different Bowie album of wildly varying quality every year to two years, so his absence has been a bit heartbreaking, especially with all the health rumours. Even if this was his last record then I think something nice and statesmanlike to end things on seems a bit more appropriate than Reality.
oddly reminds me of the new Nick Cave track.
and maybe it's because I've been reading it, but I can't help but think the lyrics are inspired by WIll Self's Psychogeography

I honestly thought he was done; when Toy leaked I figured that was him trying to give fans some closure, so to speak. This has been an amazing surprise to wake up to. The sly old (diamond) dog - on his birthday, too!

My only hard and fast rule to stick to with Bowie is avoid anything released between Let's Dance and Outside. That's a 5 album run in a discography of nearly 30.
Mind you, I wouldn't call 'Hours...' or Reality classics, but they're not bad by any stretch.

After his Vandellas cover with Jagger, and his pathetic 90s attempts to remain cool, he's managed to outdo himself with this bad CGI Rosie and Jim impression.
Ok he's got a few good records, but this man has put out innumerable volumes of pure shit.
When Blur put up Under the Westway last year, I'd put that up there as one of their best singles.
He OWNED the 70s. A bona-fide classic album every year of that decade. So, doesn't bother me that this song isn't too great or that the last 30 years have been patchy as hell. He can do what the fuck he wants.
And also he puts on amazing live shows. Glastonbury 2000, when he was sick with a sore throat and still pulled off a great set.
Saw him in Wellington New Zealand in 2004, during a freak summer storm that had closed every single route into the city and blown over most of the trees on the hill just behind the stadium, and he was there onstage in driving rain, gales blowing into his face, giving everything, saying "shall I keep going? I can take it if you can". When he could have just cut his set and walked off, because who cares about NZ anyway when you're a multi-millionaire rock star. Absolute class.
The 80's were an amazing time for him as well, even if you don't rate his records the way he adapted and led everyone into that 80's sound of Let's Dance, etc was as remarkable as his formative years.

was one of my best investments. Absolutely rinsed the fuck out of it. Was living with one other guy and my girlfriend at the time and every time he would return home I'd stick the title track on the turntable and blast it up just to annoy/make him laugh. I'm still not sure if it really pissed him off or not.
Sound pretty perfect for this point of his career (in similar vain to Johnny Cash).
Does anyone know anymore about the health rumours? The most concrete I've ever heard was that he definitely had a heart attack. He looks pretty old in that video, although not really seeing his hair doesn't help!

It's a NEW font...that looks so much like Arial you'd have to be some kind of mouthbreathing font-geek not to assume it was Arial. Good work.

when someone who has a legacy like his (ok someone with a very good legacy, count the number even close to him on one hand) that any new stuff is going to be hard to measure up. It's no instant 5 star classic song but it's lovely, it seems sombre like Heathen but maybe nicer produced. I think his last two albums were perfectly fine too so looking forward to it.
I do also admit that I'll often give songs with a slightly reflective feel over a career with genuine history some more love that out of context doesn't quite deserve.
Bring me the Disco King seemed his bowing out song quite abit, wonder if this album will be a bit less depressing.
Some good, some bad. I love what Scott Walker is doing, of course... but Tom Waits. Leonard Cohen. Bob Dylan. Paul McCartney. Those guys know how to age well without needing to go batty.
This new Bowie record seems to be in the same vein. Dignified, enjoyable music. Obviously not in the same class as his 70s work, but seemingly resigned from trying to be radio-ready or trendy. That was the problem, if anything, with his work post-Scary Monsters.

It's absolute dogshit.
this song could not have been written by 'some new guy on the scene'. much of the love directed to this track is for Bowie himself, for his journey. the general outpouring of appreciation is representative of that. does this song compare to his 70's heyday? no. is it going to change my life or give the world a brand new Ziggy-sized hard-on? highly unlikely. but, what it does do, very nicely indeed, is add another chapter to one of the greatest discographies in pop music. and that is plenty good enough for me.
How good does this album need to be to make its release worthwhile? I didn't think David needed to make a comeback at all, so I'll settle for nothing less than 9/10.
