Drowned in Sound's 100 Favourite Albums of 2012

Pretty good list overall. For a pretty sub-par year.
*Clinic
*Menomena
Not sure about Muse and Death Grips being in the list...
...and being ahead of Tame Impala.
*Lame Impala
Shame (on you) Impala
Is it good? idk
its quite good
check it out for the drumming if nothing else
Listen to Elephant at least.
I think that's my least favourite song on the album
Really?
That and Feels Like We Only Go Backwards are my fave.
sounds like i have heard Elephant before
done by Kasabian
Just skimmed the album.
I think I've lost touch almost completely with DiS type of music. Do not like.
But just so I'm not a total gimp itt I will say that I really liked the album Runner by The Sea And Cake.
yeah i don't think its a typically DiS album in any sense
too much love from the NME for that
oh, never read the NME
didn't even know about it until I started posting to DiS.
I wouldn't think they have a big readership in the states!
apart from the odd Anglophile perhaps
name?: I'm paula
I've only got 4
SO7B, Errors, The Lost Rivers & Spiritualized.
Do I still qualify to keep visiting this site????
There is no entry requirement
How many records did you buy in total this year?
Surprised you haven't got the Diiv and Melody's Echo Chamber records
You'll love both, I guarantee!
"Hmm, everyone is just talking about the Pitchfork list...
HEY EVERYONE, REMEMBER DIS HAS A LIST TOO. ITS GOT MUSE AND EVERYTHING"
It's like a scene from The Office.
mildly suprised to not see...
Menomena, Why? (Mumps, etc), Iamamiwhoami, Trust, in there somewhere.
Sean, I think you may have been 1 of very few people to hear the A Whisper in the Noise album, that could have done with a plug.
And as much as i like Screws I think there's been a fair few modern classical releases this year that have topped it.
standard why isn't this here, why doesnt anyone blah blah blah ...over
Shit
I forgot A Whisper in the Noise was this year!
Sean
Is there a review of Kendrick Lamar coming?
There's no need at this point.
Everything that can be said has already been said.
Just give it a score and link to our thread imo:
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4417903
It's been covered in Kyle's hip hop column too
Don't think we were sent it for review but I did ask someone to pen something when I was compiling the list. We weren't sent Fiona Apple for review either.
Cool, thanks.
Great album, strange you weren't sent a copy! Still, did OK for sales without it...
Also...
...still amazes me how bad this review is http://www.nme.com/reviews/kendrick-lamar/13799
hot chip at 98???
that's a fucking travesty.
I did my own list today... I bet everyone thinks I'm fucking barmy
there was so much I wanted to add and haven't got round to listening yet but it was based on gut instinct
http://yuggyloopus.wordpress.com/2012/12/21/albums-of-the-year-2012-the-beardy-anorak-edition/
don't hate me too much
the DiS list ain't bad really is it, there's a nice balance between
what everyone seems to like on here.
think zelionople is my only top 10 not in this top 10
Menomena, menomena, menomena
'Moms' doesn't seem to be featuring on any lists despite getting decent reviews across the board.
wicked album yo
Regarding that Swans album
Reading this on a popular music site:
"The Seer is ugly, grueling, and punishing in a way that only Swans can be: the seismic shovel-loads of industrial-strength sludge and merciless percussive clatter heaped upon the 23-minute closer "The Apostate" and the 32-minute title track centerpiece rain down on you like the a Biblical plague."
...makes me wonder who the hell would enjoy such long and heavy songs? These days I guess that the more unlistenable the music is, the higher rating it gets. Top 5 on DiS? This must be a joke.
it must be
kids these days
can't say I like Swans all that much
Didn't make my personal top 40. Made a lot of our staff top 5s.
I was surprised to see the Shins as high as 66
Not that 66 is particularly high. I know it got decent enough reviews when it came out, and it's an okay album, but it's barely been mentioned since and it hardly got a single mention on these boards when people listed their top fives at the six month mark. I guess I was more surprised to see it come in higher than the likes of Hot Chip, El-p, Beach House and the Walkmen which got a fair few votes in that six month poll.
Decent list though, most of my top albums from this year are in there, although not many of them are troubling the top ten.
But if there is a point to these lists it's surely to get you to check out stuff you missed first time round or to revisit things you've left on the shelf and it's doing that...
Oh, and the top five thing felt like a cop out.
and in terms of what wasn't in there, maybe
Bear In Heaven, Islet and The Invisible.
I was hoping for at least one of them to make the lost 12 when they weren't on the list
This is the first year ive not heard the winner
never even heard of it, either. So that's something.
Last.fm reckons I've listened to it twice
I don't recall either time.
Went out of my way to check Tramp out
after it got so much praise/hit the #1 DiS slot. I don't remember a goddamn note of it. Wholly unremarkable. Lauren Halo and Julia Holter both made much more interesting albums this year (in the largely solo female virtuoso music stakes at least).
*Laurel Halo
(damnit)
interesting vs listenable.
I was really excited about the Laurel Halo record but don't remember a thing about the two times I've listened to it.
Julia Holter is a pleasant enough experience, but I've not gone back to it as much.
I've listened to Tramp about 200 times.
We're all different people, just be ok with that and stuff.
Oh, absolutely.
I've just felt very at-odds with the DiS lists the last couple of years; both Emeralds and Van Etten left me pretty cold as the top choices. Emeralds especially since they sounded vaguely like Remember Remember with all the joy sucked out. In hindsight my AOTY of 2011 was probably A Winged Victory For The Sullen, and I've noticed a lot of other people picked up on that album this year.
I can't say I've listened to the whole 100 because it's really not feasible but I always want to be surprised by stuff I've not heard before. So on a positive note, my happy surprise this year has been Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti; I really can't fathom why I hadn't gotten into him before. Just the sort of willfully esoteric musical madness I love.
Oh, and Chairlift's album is much deeper and lovelier than I'd expected.
well, the list isn't just its number 1
hence trying this year to get people to pay attention to 5 great records, rather than this weird thing whereby the rest of the list is treated like also-rans.
Glad you fell for the Chairlift album, absolutely delightful record.
I'm a big Magnetic Fields fan but their new album is simply very poor.
I'm surprised to see it in a Top 100 list. Even more surprised to see it higher than The Walkmen or Beach House.
it had more staff votes, tis why.
interesting how this compares with the user voted list
