Struggled to motivate myself to go back to it
,but it seems like people are actively trying to knock him down a peg for trying to do something different.
I think it has a few of his best solo tracks on it (Objectum Sexuality, CPU, Mama Told Me, In the A) and is an enjoyable if slightly overlong listen (the deluxe version is definitely too long, despite Gossip being really good).
He's attempted to do something different with his sound -- he could have made Sir Lucious 2 and yeah it'd probably be great, but if he's obviously not interested in going down that route it wouldn't make a great listen. I'd rather see artists try something new than rehash the same lp every two years.
Just checked metacritic and it's stitting at 73/100. Don't think that's a bad score at all.
I think you'd be hard pushed to find a trend of critics looking to knock Big Boi down a peg. All the reviews I've read have been reluctantly critical, because everyone basically loves Big Boi.
Most reviews I've read have been positive
and for most artists this is totally true, but Big Boi could make Sir Lucious 2, 3, 4 and 5 and I'd be more than happy.
Haven't heard the new one yet - bit apprehensive to be honest. The fact that people aren't saying it's the best thing released this year makes me think its no Sir Lucious tho'
I love the majority of it though.
skits are always shit
Funny once and then irritating forever.
I've only listened to the rest of it once.
and it's not being slated, it's just kind of average a lot of the time
when I put a song from this album on a mix CD for my mum. I don't really want Big Boi to be making mum-friendly rap music.
Still, I don't think it's terrible or anything - I just can't see myself going back to it much. Don't really like feeling so unbothered by a Big Boi record, so here's hoping this is a way of him getting some of these ideas out of his system.
It's not as consistent as the debut, but a lot more ambitious.
but really, he's spitting over pretty safe musical territory. The debut danced around his comfort zone, but was somehow more adventurous and surprising.
I'd also argue it's pretty damn consistent - decent to good tracks all the way through, just nothing really great... and from Big Boi, that's a disappointment.
I love his last album so much, that'll do.
But I agree it's not a patch on SLLF
so it doesn't cause any existential crises amongst people who have written their best of 2012 lists.
I'd rather have a genuine Outkast album than a solo record from either of them. André's rap style has changed a lot on his guest spots lately, lacking the attack he used to have -- lyrically he's still second to none though. I just want a real follow up to Stankonia.
and all it did was make me want to listen to Sir Luscious...
