Pitchfork EOY 2012
Well, it's not here just yet but it's the one that normally generates most chatter so yeah, might as well get in nice & early before the shitstorm of bickering begins.
Anyone wanna offer up predictions on tracks/albums? While the streamlining of content w/advertising means the lists are fairly representative of the scores awarded, there are usually a few curveballs - James Blake's three EPs in 2010 merging for a top 10 place, Destroyer landing #2 spot last year and so forth. There are certain patterns that emerge and it makes the whole thing far, FAR more predictable than DiS, for example, but every year there are a handful of surprises.

put this prediction down in mid-late October, let's see how it stands up
1/ Frank Ocean
2/ Kendrick Lamar
3/ Grizzly Bear
4/ Godspeed You! Black Emperor
5/ Japandroids
6/ Fiona Apple
7/ Killer Mike
8/ Tame Impala
9/ Swans
10/ Chromatics
11/ Beach House
12/ Cloud Nothings
13/ Death Grips
14/ Burial (if counted, I suspect it will be)
15/ Ty Segall Band
16/ John Talabot
17/ Twin Shadow
18/ Andy Stott
19/ Dirty Projectors
20/ Grimes
-
21/ Julia Holter
22/ Spiritualized
23/ Perfume Genius
24/ Actress
25/ El-P
26/ Jessie Ware
27/ Flying Lotus
28/ Converge
29/ Motion Sickness of Time Travel
30/ Schoolboy Q
as for tracks, it's usually harder to call
Pyramids looks likely for no.1 although one really notable trend is that the consensus 'best' track from whatever ends up as AOTY usually gets no.2. Case in point: White Winter Hymnal, Runaway, Holocene etc. but I can't see what else would be getting the nod?
songs I reckon will feature in the top 20:
Cartoons & Cereal / Swimming Pools (maybe both)
Apocalypse Dreams
Hey Jane
Gun Has No Trigger
The Full Retard
Call Me Maybe (likely near the top)
Numb
Mercy
Don't Like (although the fallout from the gun range incident might exclude this)
Wave Goodbye
Oblivion
Sleeping Ute / Yet Again
Hacker
The House That Heaven Built
Wasted Days
Higher Ground as well come to think of it
1. Channel ORANGE
2. Good Kid, M.A.A.D City
3. Visions
4. Allelujah!
5. Kill For Love
Or something, but i've hardly read pitchfork at all this since the redesign, so not sure what else they might've lovved.
You got their top 3 rated albums in there...
Methinks the lady doth protest too much.
final bit of procrastination / borderline autism from me on this front
last year I think 6 or 7 BNM'ed records went AWOL from both the main list and Honorable Mentions. I recall Smith Westerns, A$AP Rocky, The Antlers and Washed Out all getting the shaft, none of which I would have expected at all. wonder who it might be this year?
having quickly scanned over their little collection of all the Best New Music albums, I'm gonna have a stab at Dum Dum Girls, Passion Pit, Wild Nothing and Frankie Rose for those that get unceremoniously dumped from view
I think Wild Nothing will be in there .. hunch
probably footing the bill
or thereabouts
Passion Pit more likely to scrape in ahead of Wild Nothing, for me
If only because of all that cover story focus on them.
Frankie Rose can be found on the Honorable Mentions list
http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/9018-albums-of-the-year-honorable-mention/
there's some crackers in there
as usual
WU LYF got dumped last year too I think, unfortunately

Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe seems like a peculiar choice
fair few surprises here and there
but it is the best one!
actually nahhhh
I got a swimming pool full of
liquor and they
d i i i i i i i i i i i i i i v e
in it
pool full of a liquor imma
d i i i i i i i i i i i i i i v e
in it
>_<
(how pony is 'Compton', tho, seriously)
I may recast my vote to
sing about me I'm dying of thirst
Personall y
Swimming Pools > Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe
Money Trees > Swimming Pools >... > BDKMV
Backseat>good kid>Swimming Pools
Looks like we can all agree that BDKMV isn't the best on the album
good good.
BDKMV is my favourite track on the album
so there. I'm well happy. THANKS P4K!
Its my 2nd favorite.
MAAD City is the best though, based on facts and logic, natch.
there are literally dozens of us.
1. Swimming Pools
2. The Art of Peer Pressure
3. Backseat Freestyle
4. Bitch don't kill my vibe
Oblivion is a cracking single.
What's most striking is the amount of stuff I haven't heard :/
Really really REALLY glad we live in a world where the word bitch has not only been normalized
But seen to be something totally acceptable.
*rolleyes*
We live in a world on two different axles.
Or something.
criiiiiiiiiinge
I think female artists
should go for dickhead or something like that - looking forward to hear about 'Dickheads, don't kill my vibe'.
worked for Kate Nash
I'm absolutely with you on this Sean
I hate the word and it seriously reduces my enjoyment of some brilliant music.
Impressive.
In the first 51 places Ocean and Lamar have 3 tracks each.
I have a feeling that Actress and Laurel Halo are going to be in top 10.
laurel halo is in honourable mentions
very surprised...
...by LIARS being so low. thought they would have been all over that.
... and Actress is at #33. I must be very good at this.
Glad Holy Other placed in the Honourable Mentions list
Didn't score high enough to be top 50, but it's one of my favourites this year.
ROYAL HEADACHE
finally someone noticed them. and it was fucking Pitchfork of all people.
not sure what i mean by that. nevertheless, well done Pitchfork.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44Pf2WpELgY
Huh
that honourable mentions list is properly brilliant, will probably be better than their top 20.
A couple of the very best albums of the year in there, and plenty of other exceptionally good ones.
they've developed a habit of doing this
no idea why
Seriously
Laurel Halo, Liars, Holy Other and Daughn Gibson all relegated to the sidelines?
LIARS! Really?
one of the most boring songs lists they've ever done
also, why did they stop adding funny comments under the bad album covers thing? it's not nearly as fun when it's just a page filled with them.
it feels like they're trying to become ultra professional and want to be mojo or some shit. and i still hate the website design.
WHINGE WHINGE WHINGE
and why did they not put NSFW in the link?
just had a massive cock come up on my screen at work.
well, looking back at my top 20 from mid-October, only John Talabot has shown up thus far
but this year more than any has seen 50-21 filled with non-BNM albums: Action Bronson, Sharon Van Etten, Peaking Lights, Future, Cat Power, even Rustie's Essential Mix (?!) plus a few others
given that TNGHT and Dum Dum Girls got in with EPs I assume 'Kindred' will, and that all the other records on that early prediction are a lock (*maybe* not Twin Shadow but I'm pretty certain), that means there's one slot open to be contested by quite a lot of big BNM'ed names. Bat For Lashes, Perfume Genius, Wild Nothing, Converge, Jessie Ware, Passion Pit, Nas, Baroness, Mount Eerie and The Shins
fwiw
I'm almost certain it'll be Jessie Ware
and if Twin Shadow doesn't make the cut either, Bat For Lashes will take the other slot
definitely agree with Bat for Lashes
especially after they ran that big piece on the album.
They're really pushing the definition of 'album' this year
Rustie's Essential Mix? Okaaay.
yeah I lol'd when I saw they reviewed it earlier in the year and gave it 8.1
I'm all for it mixes rule, they're often loads better than albums. Its odd tho yeah.
They might as well put out a list of their favourite mixes then
Even Gorrila vs. Bear had one this year. ELECTRONIC MUSIC HAS ARRIVED.
has to be them compensating for not having Glass Swords on last year's lists
or even Honourable Mentions
Yeah what happened there?!
Had the Rustie buzz not started properly until early this year or something?
I'm glad Hot Chip got mentioned
Because I'm bloody sick of everyone else failing to notice that they're amazing...
This alone makes this list my favourite of the big publication ones this year
wellity well well
not quite as I had called it after all
Pretty good top 20
About 5 that would make my top 20 Ty Segall, Burial, Andy Stott, Grizzly Bear & Tame Impala... nice work Pitchfork
Kendrick Lamar no.1
Probably the best hip hop album I've heard since Madvillainy so good shout I say
i don't understand whats so fantastic about it
In a great year for hip-hop
I'm totally baffled at all the love for this. Don't get it at all.
Bitch don't kill my vibe
Dislike.
Knew it'd be between those two, unfortunately. And they picked the wrong one to come top!
interesting top 20.
good to see andy stott, burial and bat for lashes so high. lol at beach house. must check out that fiona apple album
as I scrolled down to the inevitable
I envisioned a Gareth Gates/Will Young scenario, except I knew that the vanilla option would win over the interesting option. (not talking about the sexuality thing, here).
but NO!! :D haha yesss!
totally agree with their top 2,
in my opinion channel orange edges it but theyre by far the best - and only really stellar releases i've heard this year
glad there's no weirdo emotional breakdowns that usually occur in pitchfork threads, let's keep it that way
Fairly decent list
Think they're suffering a bit of an identity crisis now, a kind of 'jack of all trades, master of none' publication. Where they used to be excellent at spotting indie records & trends, we get the bizarre top 10 inclusion of Beach House & Grizzly Bear albums that are perfectly decent, but would struggle to get anyone particularly excited.
Guess it doesn't help that it wasn't a particularly strong year for indie rock... Nice to see Fiona Apple high, and Kendrick pip Frank O's more patchy effort to the top.
I'm probably sounding like a stuck record but
No Perfume Genius? Anywhere? Did I miss it?
No, it wasn't in the top 50 or even Honourable Mentions
Insane.
In fact I've just realised that four of my top five aren't in there anywhere
The other three absentees being Dan Deacon, Mount Eerie and Tall Ships. Tall Ships probs aren't their thing but I'm surprised at the other two.
I actually wish Pitchfork was more indie. Wow.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5CVsCnxyXg
I'd have thought Andy Stott and Burial would be higher...
Part of me also thought they'd merge Kindred with Truant/Rough Sleeper to seem really 'current' but in the end I'm glad they didn't as they deserve to stand separately. God, Burial's had an amazing year with those 5 songs.
anyone had a gander at the always interesting staff lists?
not as much of a gold mine as in previous years, but then they only show the top tens now.
<3 Andy Beta, though.
nice pick of the otherwise scandalously overlooked Mirroring in Mark Richardson's tracks. also love him and Brandon Stosuy for putting 'Set it Right' by HTDW in their track top tens.
I was going to lay in to newer writers for ruining the charts, but it's actually the old guard who have the most homogenous individual charts. obviously Schreiber's chart is pretty axiomatic. Frank Ocean at number one in both of his, though. hahaha.
I do miss the old P4K, though. before RS left the dirty work to his underlings.
