What was the most recent Christmas Classic?
Y'know the ones that fill out christmas compilations every year.
And I don't mean covers of the old standards, I mean original tunes.
I fully expected The Darkness' effort - Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End - to join the group but I'm not so sure it has. Before that it was probably Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas is You... which is nearly 20 years old now(!)
What's going on? Is the christmas novelty song a closed club now belonging solely to the 70s and the 80s?

Father Christmas
Elf Power
Low - Just Like Christmas
All of Low's Christmas album.
Ah yes my mum always sticks that one on when we sit down for dinner.
tbf I did hear just like Christmas in a few shops etc last year
I could cross over.
What about the Waitresses song? That was 90's and thats crossed over
Heard
it playing in Sainsburys last night along with other more accepted Christmas classics.
mm well The Waitresses song came out
in 1982.
Really? I thought it was the 90's
Did someone do a cover of it in the 90's?
The Spice Girls did
Bob Dylan - Must Be Santa
2009. A cover of a 1960 song, admittedly, but still...
Hurts - All I Want For Christmas Is New Year's Day

All of you need to learn to read, except eltham
I'd still say The Darkness is the biggest shout
Smith and burrows when the Thames froze
Classic
The Darkness song is becoming part of those compliations
so I'd say that one.
70's/80's closed club I reckon
Agree that the Darkness has a great crack with theirs, although it also served to highlight that "The Christmas Pop Song" is firmly entrenched in the eras that inspired the Darkness track.
The Hives/Cyndi Lauper one
is great, but it's not exactly NOW Christmas! material.
Didn't The Killers do a whole bunch of them, do people like those?
Proper Crimbo
Someone needs to come along and give Christmas a good kick up the arse
proper tunes, proper baubles, proper crimbo
The Fall - (We Wish You A) Protein Christmas EP
hi.

its is kind of surreal how every christmas
everywhere reverts to a soundtrack of 70s and 80s tunes
you cant go anywhere without hearing snippets of the same songs
I think Christmas songs HAVE to be old because it's about nostalgia.
People want to be reminded of when they were kids opening presents.
The last few years we've had programmes like X-Factor pushing the Christmas single slot but not actually bothering to do a Christmas song, meaning no one else is trying to compete against that.
I don't understand why you don't find more
bands attempting to write a Christmas 'classic.' Generally, festive songs these days seem to be throwaway tunes released for a laugh but I seem to remember Jona Lewie talking on one of these 'bestest xmas songs ever' shows and saying that it was the best pension plan anyone could imagine.

I think it's more a case of society just being more cynical these days
You just can't do a happy 'Hey it's Christmas, everyone have fun' song, people won't go for it. Even The Darkness track, which seems the only candidate from recent years, has a patina of irony laid over it in its rather pathetic attempt to make a reference to 'bell-ends'.
There is a whole thread of our attempts
I guess it just isn't that easy
i cant think of any recent ones
i do think its funny though that the killers release a christmas song every year but not one of them has gone on to be a classic haha keep trying lads
