Best Nirvana song?
I'm going with this for the 'what the hell is that great sound' factor when I first heard it on Snub TV in 1991...

About A Girl
dumb
Aneurysm
The version on Incesticide is my favourite - it was a BBC session I think
Exceptional performance. Otherwise Sappy
Nah, I'm a b-side off Teen Spirit fan, myself.
Although the live Muddy Banks one does slay also.
Hard not to agree with Aneurysm
Serve the Servants/Scentless Apprentice close behind for me.
Scentless Apprentice
or Milk it
Sliver
Sliver...
...is the band at their most natural sound and sees them pull away, hugely from Mudhoney et al. It's a great, great song. Aneurysm wins it for me but this is a VERY close 2nd...
yea anuerysm
you know you're right
the cover of 'where did you sleep last night' is my favourite kurt ting though
good call..
..when that aired the look on his face said more than words can, that rasping vocal, good call indeed...
I don't believe stuff like this
He just looks like he's singing a song
probably the best "last song" a band recorded, ever
Scentless Apprentice
still fin myself absent mindedly tapping out the drum beat despite not listening to the song in years
Never had a drum beat been so lodged in my mind.
The bunch abrasive ones on In Utero are in competition for best track, I reckon.
I do love School though.
Scent less apprentice or aneurysm
Quite surprised at some of the answers
Aneurysm is a lot of fun, but best song?
My favourite is probably Lounge Act. I also loved Heart Shaped Box until I associated it with Courtney Love's vagina..argh. And I do wonder whether if it hadn't been played everywhere..to death..to the point where it gets really annoying.. the choice could be Smells Like Teen Spirit. Special mentions to About A Girl..You Know You're Right..and the unplugged version of Pennyroyal Tea.
that bassline ...
Smells Like Teen Spirit
come at me bro
Even in his youth
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter or On a Plain for me
I always forget about Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
It is actually one of the best yeah
love the stupidly annoying/catchy feedback at the beginning
Probably Territorial Pissings or Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
Aneurysm is well good too.
Dive
All Apologies
easily.
^ 2nd best
after Heart-Shaped Box.
NB: I am not really much of a fan of Nirvana.
that's my least favourite
I was never much of a Nirvana fan and only really know the obvious stuff
I think All Apologies is pretty shit
compared to a lot of their output.
Pennyroyal Tea
always had a strange love for this one.
either this or
Something In The Way
Territorial Pissings
Blew
The recorded version of Aneurysm sounds gash.
But if, like me, the reason you like Nirvana is a bit of shrieking, Dave Grohl's drumming, and songs that are an exercise in tension and release, then the live version is pretty hard to beat.
Quite like Serve The Servants though.
Would probably have to say You Know You're Right
or Dive or Aneurysm.
One of those 3.
Its Dive
for real yall!
also dig this remix of 'all apologies'

Good a place as any to mention that Paintings of Ships are hosting a dan_thw-style retrofest based around Nirvana Unplugged at the Good Ship on 16th December witha plethora of supporting cast:
Paintings of Ships
Ghosts of December
Ciccerone Dead
Urb Scrunting
Madame So
Me from Amy Blue
A Thousand Knives (him from Amy Blue's other band)
From about 5 onwards, obligatory FB page

And that leaves me the challenge of squeezing Aneurysm into my set I guess...
Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle
Drain You
Tourettes
Floyd the Barber
All apologies
Sliver
About a girl
I like their mellower and happy moments.
...
Downer
Lounge Act
Territorial Pissings
Tourettes
Drain You
Hairspray Queen
SUB-THREAD:
I read once that Kurt was equally pleased with the unplugged set and the noisier stuff on In Utero - Milk It, Scentless Apprentice etc - and was torn between the two styles for the next album.
If they could've done one more studio album, which way would you have wanted it to swing?
Noisy, for sure
I think Kurt would have gone solo soon enough and definitely gone in an acoustic, introverted direction. Given that assumption, may as well put the band to it's full use and make the hardest hitting album they could
A repeated signpost
was Blood On The Tracks for where Kurt said he wanted to go with strings and organ sounds, but I reckon the next Nirvana album would have sounded like a more dischordant Fables of the Reconstruction, or a Gang of Four record. I doubt he would overcome his laziness/procrastination/pop sensibilities to completely ditch the riff driven verse-chorus-verse stuff but Milk It was a great artistic breakthrough where he managed to equal or maybe surpass his heroes the Melvins, Jesus Lizard, Lennon's Yer Blues...
Mac of Superchunk's initial reaction to Kurt's suicide was looking past the personal tragedy and the next biggest loss was that there won't be another Nirvana record.
It's Negative Creep for me..
Love Buzz
it's Milk It for me
it's the most discordant and brutal thing they ever did, it's almost frightening. That laugh he kind of does in the second chorus, it's chilling! I love Jesus Lizard and Big Black/Rapeman which is clearly the vibe they were going for when they wrote that song but they just leave those bands for dead with that.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night? off of MTV Unplugged
Like a 4 minute suicide note. It's chilling but brilliant
Also have a hankering for Rape Me. I remember when the album came out it was on the jukebox at my local and the track listing had a space where the title should have been. Innocent times
3rd and 4th best
after All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box.
Next is About A Girl, for those who need to know the full top 5.
You've chosen the right top 5
but not necessarily in the right order
:)
So there's no one else who rates Heart Shaped Box?
i've already chosen but, yeah, it's up there.
I dislike that song for some reason.
Pretty cool, I guess, but somehow kinda dull...
Also: Blew
It's seriously ace.
drain you
for the opening.
school for the 'yer in high school agaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain' scream.
where did you sleep for spine-chills.
sliver for oh my god guitar pop can be beautiful.
It was weird to find out after watching Perfume that the original book was the inspiration for Scentless Apprentice.
Rape Me.
The girl pictured on your blog is NOT...
Toby Vail. This is Toby Vail: http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/4889/indexbunnynb4.jpg
The girl pictured with Kurt is Tracy Marander I believe?
Best for me are...
Lithium or Come as you are.
School
NO RECEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!
All Apologies
On A Plain
Lithium
That's your top three.
I feel like On A Plain is the weaker brother of Drain You
Are you crazy!?
On A Plain over Drain you any day.
Those first few notes when it kicks in, its like a massive "f**k you" to the world, it makes me wanna go drink some beer and rock out to some good tunes after telling your boss to go stick it for being a corporate square.
