Bands & Comedians
People who have similar places within their respective industries, similarly broad/cult appeals, similar career trajectories etc. Go as niche as you want. I'll start simple (and i'm not the first person to make this comparison):
COLDPLAY - MICHAEL MCINTYRE
Superstar stadium-fillers, undeniably very good at what they do but pilloried by the snobs for being too 'safe.' Make people very very happy and very very angry in equal measure.

stewart lee - the fall
most people think it's interlectual arty bollocks when in fact they're not.
to be a fan you have to accept that you'll be spend a lot of time being frustrated with their songs / jokes.
probably wouldn't want to stuck talking to either in a bar
Actually to be fair Stew Lee seems really lovely IRL
I found MES...
....to be thoroughly nice too.
From the sounds of things, it's luck of the draw with MES
Probably depends on his mood
Tool - Bill Hicks
There was a mutual admiration. Bill introduced Tool at Coachella one year. When Bill died, Tool paid tribute by having a Painting of him on their album Aenima. I'm pretty positive that Tool's title track from that album was inspired by the Arizona Bay sketch.
Michael MacIntyre - Mumford and Sons
The hate is greater, is what I'm saying
^Reckon that's a much better comparison than the OP.
I think most people would concede Coldplay have some decent moments and I don't think that many people actively hate them - more aren't too arsed about that whereas I think Mumford & MacIntyre are both very divisive and actively inspire hatred in their detractors.
Elliott Smith - Mitch Hedberg
Exceptionally talented artists who obtained a fanatical following. Both uncomfortable in the limelight their talent earned, and almost inevitably died way too young, though their work really stands the test of time.
Los Campesinos - Josie Long
Twee

Peter Kay - LMFAO
D. Boon/ John Belushi ?
both extraordinarily talented and beloved, both taken much too soon.
and rotund.
I'll go for:
Doug Stanhope - Cop Shoot Cop
Richard Herring - Space/The Decemberists
There was a really shouty beardy scottish comedian ages ao who wasn't Billy Connelly, I forget his name but pair him up with the Jesus Lizard
I got a couple of Bill Hicks cd's recently and found it odd/unpleasant that he had a professional bar band playing as background music while he did his show, it was completely unnecessary.
The Beatles - Monty Python
If you don't like them, you don't like music/comedy etc.
Also with the George Harrison/Handmade films link
See what you did there...! Get this for a Beatles/comedy crossover. One time, George Harrison had Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan round his house and they had a jam, Sellers on drums, George on guitar and bass, Milligan on guitar - he was so taken with the Strat that he'd borrowed that George sneaked it into the boot of his car when he left, so when he got home he had a wonderful surprise. Isn't that nice? So, you could pair them up with the Goon Show in theory too.
Frankie Boyle - Mick Jagger
the outspoken voice of the disenfranchised youth, dehumanised and demonised by the press, and feared by parents nationwide
Dave Gorman - Ringo Starr
He’s an everyman; he’s well-known and provides entertainment in a variety of guises, but he still gives the impression he’d be incredibly polite if he ever met your mother.
