Good amps for rock/shoegaze?
I'm thinking of upgrading so any advice welcome...
I'm thinking Marshall possibly, ideally an amp with a good reverb function would be handy if I can use alongside a pedal such as a memory man.
Guitar is a fender jazzmaster - unsuprisingly given the above.
Cheers

Twin Reverb
Hot Rod Series Fenders.
Good playing.
+1 on Fender Twin Reverb
If you can find a blackface Pro Reverb then even better I reckon
ive got a hot rod deville and its immense for that sound
all you need is a good fuzz pedal a a reverb that has a reverse function. you'll be kevin shields in no time!!!
a 2 speaker fender amp
with tubes
seriously all you need - deville/hot rod deville/twin reverb etc.
I am probably in a minority but I think a good solid state amp is great for this kind of thing, I recently got a roland jazz chorus off ebay and it is great, it has the cleanest of clean sounds (coupled with the worst distortion ever), which admitedly isnt a very exciting sound but when using lots of pedals thats kind of what you want a completely uncoloured amplification of the pedal sounds. They are quite old amps but the lower watt ones can be picked up atreally reasonable prices.
^very much this
Many classic shoegaze bands (Slowdive, MBV, Pale Saint etc) used JC120's for cleans and Marshalls for distortion. If you're on a budget though just get a Twin/Pro reverb.
also Johnny Greenwood
not the exact sound you're going for, but shows that it is a pretty well-loved amp alt-rock circles
these can be bought on a budget too second hand, I dont know if it is the time of the year or something but they seem to be going for very little on ebay at the moment. i'd been outbid many times this year but managed to get a 50w (still very loud) one for £150, about £100 less than the last time I was outbid on one, I still get the emails from ebay and I see one has just gone for just £72, that is a ridiculously good price for such a high quality amp
I have a Marshall JCM 800 combo (4104 model)
with an external spring reverb unit. I'm actually using it for surf, but it gives a nice shoegaze sound too. It's not a very flexible sound, though, so if you need a wide variety of different sounds then you may be better off using a solid state amp and getting most of your sound out of your fx.
Fender Deluxe Reverb.
Sunn Model T
Fender Reverb Deluxe
Crystal clear sound then pedals to the work.
Boom.
You have the words the wrong way around.
VOX AC30s are lovely for shoegaze.
As are Fenders, Twin Reverbs certainly.
If you'd like to use pedals, I'd certainly think about the amount of headroom you can have in the amp you're looking at.
(It's not really a shoegaze amp, but the reverb on my Orange Rockerverb is absolutely lovely..)
What's your budget?
Best
...amp I ever owned in terms of versatility was this
http://www.tech21nyc.com/products/amps/guitar/trademark60.html
Brilliant for swirling droney murk as well as clean. Looks kind of gimmicky the way they've got it split into a "Fender" channel and a "Marshall" channel, but it really does what it says on the box. I'd been a dedicated valve snob, and walked into a guitar shop looking for something to replace my much-loved Laney Pro 100. Ended up buying the T60, absolutely loved it.
also.. are you playing gigs...
cos if you get fender twin and play in your bedroom the volume wont go past 2.
If you're just recording in your bedroom with an SM57
and maybe a condenser, consider the Fender Pro Junior. Really good with pedals. Only has a tone and volume knob. Solid.
i have a fender blues junior
not hugely different to the pro, but it's a bit more versatile in terms of controls... if you are playing at home it has master volume as well as volume, which can come in quite handy if you have soft neighbours. (it also has a bigger speaker.)
Don't worry about amp reverb
Just get a DigiTech HardWire RV-7.
nah
get an ekdahl moisturiser
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nIMKzU5Dko&feature=related
...which costs three times the RV-7
and isn't quite as plug and play.
but it's lovely
i'm kind of surprised by the price of that, it's cheaper than most real spring reverbs and has all that extra stuff
that's because the guy who makes them is a fucking hero
Oh a EHX Cathedral
seriously underrated, does all the big epic reverb along with tasteful subtle stuff too. And it has a freeze function for doing long ambient bits.
i play a Music Man amp,
it's an amp Leo Fender made after leaving Fender.
A kinda clone of the Twin Reverb. Television apparently used it on there Marquee Moon album, and Albert Lee uses them exclusively.
you basically want something with a lot of headroom. Room to layer in effects, without the tubes breaking up too quickly.. tarnishing the sound you have in mind.
There is an amp called a Roland Jazz Chorus, that would do the job. As it's transistor, there is less to go wrong, and it has a great clean tone.
Errr on the side of Fender sounding stuff over Marshalls, i've used Marshall and Orange and although it has THAT AMAZING GUITAR SOUND, it's perhaps not what you're after
i also have a Laney VC30 (vox ac 30 clone).. which sounds great
Not sure i'd use it for shoegazey stuff though.. purely because it doenst stay clean for long enough
If the Roland Jazz Chorus is your thing
The clean channel on the newer Roland Cube amps are, as far as I can tell, is an identical models of the Jazz Chorus. Sounds very nice ... you'll need pedals if you want any dirt at all though
Another vote for Fender
I play a Jag into a Hot Rod Deluxe and it's lush, especially with reverb and delay in the effects loop.
I'd love a Twin, but they are heavy motherfuckers to lug to gigs and back.
