just listened to every track Sonic Youth have done...
A QUESTION:
how the fuck can a band who wrote 'Teen Age Riot' (arguably a perfect song) release so much absolute shite (90% of their other stuff)?
Deary, deary me.
So much potential.

Limited Sight Distance
yeah, i love and hate them in equal measure
purr (from dirty) is so so good. most of the time i don't know what they're playing at though
I found A Thousand Leaves incredibly hard to get into, but I was determined. At the start it sounded like a pot full of hot and bubbling shit to me.
I don't think I can stomach NYC Ghosts and Flowers though. No way.
Those two are probably my favourite albums.
Magical, both of them.
you haven't though have you.
why would you?
it's humanly not possible
i don't know why you do this to yourself
where do you stand on the concept of growers?
he likes the ones in his shower
99% of the time...
i can listen to a 15-20 second segment of any song and know whether it'll be good or not.
is that your party trick...
shame You Bet's not on the telly any more
christ
how did you ever end up listening to any good music?
Their last good album was Washing Machine. That in fact is a
stunning album.
that simply is not true
regards,
Sonic Nurse
seconded
signed,
murray street
Thirded,
Yours huffily,
Rather Ripped.
I believe
that the problem is yours, and not theirs.
Cheers
Nope.
Not as if they've been commercially successful, is it?
Ergo, they've failed as a band.
typical northerner
valuing success only in monetary terms
The exact same thing used to puzzle me as well.
Teenage riot and 100% are the only sonic youth songs I like.
If Sonic Youth's whole career was in reverse
People would still argue that they were shit from the third album onwards
dad rock evolving into no wave?
well it'd be novel
lol in what way have they ever sounded like Ocean Color Scene?
but they've also written stuff like this
which is just lovely, frankly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP3ovD8ZSS4
you didn't just listen to track Sonic Youth have done, did you
:D
murray street is a beaut
whilst we're here
am I the only one who thinks Teenager Riot would be improved by being maybe 5-10% faster? with a more Silver Rocket type pace?
aaaaaanyway
i don't really like teenage riot
in fact i don't think daydream nation is very good at all
forza pls get back to me when you've worked out my indie points score thanks
I hear you, brother
Daydream Nation leaves me pretty cold. It's all about Sister and Goo as far as I'm concerned (pretty sure those two cancel each other out on the indie points scale).
^this actually
never really been a massive fan of that album, I remember teenage riot being played a lot on MTV2 and being fairly nonplussed, it wasn't until I heard Sonic Nurse on a whim a few years later that Sonic Youth began to click for me.
Schizophrenia
is the only song of theirs I really like.
that's fine
because it's their best song.
Fair question
I'm interested to know how long it took you.
i'm going to say
a lot less time than you'd expect
hahaha
about an hour all in.
:D
including all known lanthanides and actinides?
how long did that take you?
And
did you include everything everything? All those SYR artsy things?
bet you skipped all the 'feeback-y' bits
I always do
I used to love Sonic Youth
but I can't remember the last time I felt the urge to listen to one of their records.
I even quite like Rather Ripped.
I struggle with most of NYC Ghosts, and I find Murray St a bit boring.
Teenage Riot isn't even the best song on Daydream Nation
That'd be Hey Joni. Or Cross the Breeze.
I love 'Cross The Breeze and Rain King.
yeah cross the breeze is the best on DN IMHO
CANDLE
I like most of their albums to be honest
NYC ghosts and flowers is probably my least favourite. I know rather ripped gets a bad name but it was the first one i bought when it came out. The 5-album run from EVOL to Dirty is pretty perfect though.
I'm not going to lay into you for being thick
not going to go off on one about how fucking ace Sonic Youth are.
what I am going to do is request that you review every single Sonic Youth track. ratings out of ten, a short paragraph for each.

Fake Train by Unwound
Trail of Dead's Madonna
Is the best Unwound album, for that matter. As Conrad would say, "Sonic WHO!?!". Quite apt, actually.
So, I gather from this thread that everyone has different tastes and no one is right. I do think Antenna is the perfect distillation of their sound for the last ten years though, it's wonderful.
no
I like the one with the feedback mic pendulum
it's my jam.
turning from hate to love
i've got nothing better to do today. i'm a Brit stuck in LA on fucking trick the Indians day. yay.
so, my top ten SY tracks then.
1.) Teen Age Riot
2.) Schizophrenia
3.) Shadow Of A Doubt
4.) The Diamond Sea
5.) Dirty Boots
6.) Winner's Blues
7.) Pink Steam
8.) Wish Fulfillment
9.) Rain On Tin
10.) 100%

anyone else?
listen pal
if you're going to be this ambivalent towards being a Brit stuck in LA on thanksgiving day, there's plenty of us who would happily swap with you.
thanks. (good list)

i will endeavor to improve my attitude. off to a pub.
good chat.
also Wildflower Soul might be my new favourite SY song
I love how they can really rock out on a song with any distortion, keeping it so shiny and clean
They've been going so long now they're like the Rolling Stones of Modern Rock music
So they have their best period i.e. the first ten years. They haven't really progressed artistically since the 80's. Since then they've released a lot of average to mediocre material with a couple of terrible albums here and there. Long-term fans will defend them, but a lot of young upstarts will claim they are irrelevant much to the amusement of anyone over 25.
replace the band name & the standout track
and you've got the world, friend.
I tried listening to every Sonic Youth album
I had them all at one stage, on LP or CD. All great until the 90s really, I just couldn't get into much of that at all. Got better in the 00s I found.
Today officially marks the end of the 2011/12 season for me, and with that my regular participation in the daily football threads (though i'll still be around generally). What can i say, i'm a man of my word. I've tried to drag it out a bit, you have to, but August is upon us.
I'll definitely miss the daily shabs, but to be honest, i'm just a bit busy nowadays, and i can't think of a better place to leave it than at the end of the glorious season during which i was proved ultimately right and we were crowned the Champions of England in such glorious fashion.
I'll probably keep you up-to-date with my groundhopping adventures, and can't promise i won't resort to the odd smiley whenever we brutally turn over United! again, but for now i can live without DanielKelly's needless early-morning paranoid defensivity, Jordan's multiple City-obsessed accounts, and the dead inside high-horsing of part-time Arsenal fans, etc, etc.
All the best riding your fold-up bikes to those mundane office jobs, but some of us have got actual adult shit to do, and as much as i'd love to mock you all continiuously, i'm just not sure i can be bothered any more. The proof, as they say, has been in the pudding.
As we discussed on that fateful day in May when Manchester City became the best, most feared, some would argue biggest club in the whole of England, that achievement felt like a natural end to my 20-year, stripes-earned journey as a supporter. I've not bought a season ticket for the coming season, even a membership, i'm not even planning on keeping tabs with news or scores, though i'll still watch Match of the Day, of course.
Given this, that i won't be supporting the club i've loved for two decades either financially or vocally in the flesh, i sadly have to sacrifice my right to a public opinion on matters MCFC. That's just how it works in the real world. It's a shame some of you tykes are too shameless to appreciate that, but each to their own.
Good luck to you all, but i'm off to walk the Fells, grow some veg, catch some fish, see a bit of the world, romance some hot Eastern European chicks, get myself on the property ladder and produce some offspring. It's been fun, but we've all got to grow out of it at some point.
:''D
pfffft
saw this when it was first posted.
Teen Age Riot rocks you indie belms
it's one of those songs that tricks you into getting all nostalgic over times that actually weren't all that spectacular
Kim's Body/Head thing with that noise guy at Supersonic
was pretty special.
forza is lazy/crazy/hazy/fantazy
And to prove it here is my lovingly crafted SY playlist.
