The DiS year-end albums list and how it could be done this year.
Hello everyone,
A couple of queries:
1) Are people happy with me doing the DiS users' albums of the year list again this year? I've had fun doing it before, and I'd really like to do it again this year if you're happy for me to do so.
2) Do you have any suggestions for how this could be done? The past two years it's worked on a top 5 (1 receiving five points, 2 four points, 3 three, etc.) - any better suggestions? Or is this a sifficient way to do it?
3) It's been a decent year for music, eh?

Great, it's turned into one of *these* threads...
my suggestion was serious
people might actually vote for their favourite albums then, rather than giving no-hoper a token vote to avoid voting for the big hitters they actually preferred.
Okay, cool.
My apologies.
This is a good idea, though. The only option for this, however, is people messaging me, which, when it comes to collating it, is a bit of a nightmare.
Is there a way that ^^ could be done?
^Not this
The best thing about the end of year poll is finding out about a load of albums you'd never have heard of from people's individual lists - if you only get the top 100 or whatever at the end then by definition it'll just be the ones everyone knows anyway. (Also thanks for doing this again, you rock)
Very good point, also.
Were it not for collating this last year, I wouldn't have known about Son Lux, which turned out to be a subsequent favourite.
good point.
its just as much a reason to scan what other people have been voting for in case you've missed something
could someone not design a simple voting widget?
that we can all use?
Could do, if medulla would like.
Jeeeeeeez Theo
He specifically asked for someone NOT to design a simple votin widget. You are just being antagonistic now!
there's no reason we couldn't have people submit a list in a form
AND on the boards too.

1) Yes, cheers.
2) No, you carry on. Seems the best way to do it.
3) I agree.
Thanks, mate.
^this
except I'm a teensy bit more ambivalent about No.3.
NB: "sifficient" should obviously be "sufficient". I'm not daft. Thanks.
I was going to check you were still up for doing this.
1) Yes.
2) I think it works as best as any other method could.
3) It has yes, and I have been squirming around in the five for a while.
It's the first year in a looooong time that i'll genuinely have to sit and
consider deeply my favourite.
Current contenders:
Both Death Grips albums
Deftones
Joey Bada$$
Xiu Xiu
Dan Deacon
Action Bronson
Animal Collective
Polica
Holy Other
Young Magic
Exitmusic
Kiler Mike
Purity Ring
(MUST STOP LISTING AMAZING ALBUMS...)
than Dan Deacon album is stunning
had a breakthrough listen yesterday. a genuine thrill.
you know I actually plain forgot to listen to that dan deacon album
get on it!
tbf, there are scores of possibly great records from this year I haven't even heard yet.
I think you did a good job last year
I like that everyone lists their top albums in a thread, so we can all see them. But otherwise.....Surveymonkey?!
I'd like to be the first to complain about however you do this
and whatever the results end up being. Fuck you, buddy.
Go for it.
I like to look at other folk's suggestions if only so that I can look down my enormous nose at them.
1. Yes
2. Prefer a higher sampling of records, say 15 or 20 (to help improve variety)
3. Sub-par year for sure.
Yes, go for it.
Happy to help with stats in some way if I can via web-based collation.
There is a DiS last.fm group that if everyone joined we could farm some data from there to see what comes up.
Personally I favour an unweighted system because I'm not great on actually putting a top 5 / 10 / 20 in order. Obviously you do need something to show what is more popular than what, though. I guess once you have the stats it's fairly easy to display them in different ways.
I've enjoyed this year for music.
in previous years, we've said that for unranked tops 5s, all albums = 3
year has sucked for music
I'll see if I can find someone to code something
Although there are quite a few of those survey websites that we could probably use.
*Please* don't find someone to code something
I mean that in the best possible way
As long as Tindersticks are on top
you can whatever you like with the rest of it.
Can we do 10 this year please?
5 is just so brutal, especially in great years like this one.
I agree
A top 10 is needed.
No.
That'll fuck with comparing it to the previous years.
Can I make a general plea when it comes to analysing the results of the poll?
Please PLEASE let's not have the whinging this year about how 'boring, predictable and safe' the choices at the top are.
The artists who will end up topping this poll will be OF NECESSITY the ones that the majority of DiS will have heard and therefore will be, by the standards of the community, the big bands.
Most users' votes combine the 'big names' and the lesser knowns. By the process of aggregation of course the big names end up taking the most votes (because we all have different lesser knowns) so the winners will have to be the 'big names'.
So don't get your knickers in a twist about it. Don't flap, don't sneer, don't spit the dummy. The winner will be someone most of us have heard of, it won't be anyone 'obscure' simply because of the nature of the process.
Done.
indeed
that's why the list I do on the main site, makes sure the most popular things don't always rise to the fore. I pay attention to the staff votes and conversations on DiS throughout the year
using the points system suggested isnt right imo
it means that an album that gets 2 number 4 places is worth as much as 1 second place
i think this system i've seen on another board works really well
rewards the higher placed positions more
(100*(1+(Nv/Vmax)))/(X+(Nv/Vmax))
Where;
100 is the number of points that we want all #1s to receive
Nv is the number of voters that vote
Vmax is the limit to the size of their ballot (100 for singles, 50 for albums, 40 for comps and 10 for misc)
X is where they voted <whatever> in their list.
dan to thread, please
