I'm a bit late to this b-side, but holy shit. Top shelf.
or Goo, or Experimental Jet Set, which I pretty much count as a trio
don't really care for Experimental Jet Set tho
but Dirty's by far their most RAWK and it kicks asses - easily their best 90s album
not even close
for me the rockyness of it is why it isn't so good, it just sounds too standard, their weird discordant open tuning sounds are either lost in/or replaced by big fuzzy chords that could be any other alt rock band, just doesnt seem to be them playing to their strengths
the Evening Session/Goodier sessions they did for Radio 1 around this time, they put some of the Dirty stuff in a different context, and are brilliant for it. Purr has an acoustic slant to it, Creme Brulee has them molesting a grand piano in the BBC studios, Youth Against Fascism is a lot more punky and discordant and (old song) Burning Spear is sped up and full of juddering white noise. It's possibly my favourite recordings by them.
The right blend of tune and dirge, great hooks. The only thing it lacked was some decent long freeform guitar noodlage (like the sprawl, or something like that). Similarly I've a lot of time for Goo. Washing Machine seemed good at the time, but I'm not so sure now.
BUT THE DREAM IS SHATTERED NOW SO IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYMORE OH WELL.
there's something about her voice that i find really irritating.
