No-one ever talks about The The.
One of my favourite bands of all time.
Some live footage of Albert Hall gigs when Johnny Marr was in the band...
the Infected video on Channel 4 c1986. Still one of my favourite albums. Seen them/him three times - I feared for my life at one of the gigs. Absolute madness. But wonderful.
....ageless perfect pop songs and Matt Johnson, as well as pushing many boundaries back in the day has always maintained 100% integrity, a brilliant, truly brilliant and perceptive songwriter.
Nothing of merit since then mind, and their headline gig at Reading in 1993 was atrocious.
Never much cared for the stuff before or after but I know every second of this album back to front. Have the video at home somewhere too. Funnily enough his 'apocalyptic' visions of the US and the Middle East couldn't be any closer than the reality of today and this album is what, 30 years old?
We've been here before in a deleted MPBH-thread, I think.
I can understand why Infected would be seen as 80s cheese but Soul Mining? One of the best albums of that decade. Then there's Mind Bomb and Dusk, both darker, more subtle and very good.
There's some wonderful drumming and drum programming on Soul Mining. I've Been Waitin' For Tomorrow (All Of My Life) predicts drum'n'bass, whilst GIANT is proto tribal progressive house.
Matt Johnson's lyrics and voice are probably divisive; I don't mind them but the music is what I really love about this band.
don't know a great deal about them (or him) as I dip in an and out. But do own Dusk and it's a great great album. Oh man, going to have to listen to that now.
