Liars
Drum's Not Dead > WIXIW > They Were Wrong, So We Drowned > Liars = They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck a Monument On Top > Sisterworld.
I'd go for
They Were Wrong>Drums Not Dead>Sisterworld=They Threw Us All In A Trench...>WIXIW>Liars
The new one doesn't do it for me.
I'd go
TWW > DND > Sisterworld > Liars > WIXIW > Trench
Might be different tomorrow though
I really liked Sisterworld when it came out
But now it's had a chance to settle I find it's the one I come back to the least.
I'd say
They Were Wrong>Liars>Trench>DND>WIXIW>Sisterworld
Clearly
DND > TWW > Liars > TTUAIAT > WIXIW > Sisterworld
or TWW > DND > Lairs > TTUAIAT > Sisterworld > WIXIW
or Liars > DND > TTUAIAT > TWW > WIXIW > Sisterworld
or
basically changes depending on whichever ones I've listened to most recently
i'd go for
drums not dead > sisterworld > wixiw > liars > they were wrong > they threw us all in a trench
Love how there's no definitive answer to this one.
Drum's Not Dead > Sisterworld > They Were Wrong > WIXIW > Liars > Trench
Iron Maiden
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son = Somewhere in Time > Piece of Mind = Powerslave > The Number of the Beast > Brave New World > Iron Maiden > Killers > Dance of Death > Fear of the Dark > A Matter of Life and Death > The Final Frontier > No Prayer For The Dying > The X Factor > Virtual XI
A different take on Radiohead
The King of Limbs > Amnesiac > The Bends > Kid A > OK Computer > In Rainbows > Hail to the Thief > Pablo Honey
Talking Heads
Remain In Light = Fear Of Music > More Songs About Buildings and Food > Speaking In Tongues > '77 > Little Creatures > True Stories > Naked
Sparklehorse
It's a Wonderful Life > Good Morning Spider > Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot > Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain

Forgot best of the beatles
^ Not a Partridge fan
Revolver > Rubber Soul > The Beatles > A Hard Day's Night > Help! > Please Please Me > Magical Mystery Tour > Beatles For Sale > With The Beatles > Let It Be > Abbey Road > Sgt. Peppers
What about Squeeze
Nobody ever remembers Squeeze. I mean obviously it goes last on the list, but even so.
... and incidentally it's
WL/WH > The Velvet Underground > banana album > VU > Loaded > Squeeze
I'd have
Boxer > Alligator > Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers > High Violet > The National
For me, it's
Alligator > High Violet > Boxer > Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers > The National
and just to add another variation
High Violet > Boxer > Alligator > Cherry Tree EP > Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers > The National
Alligator > Boxer > High Violet > The National > Sad Songs
High Violet > Boxer = Alligator > Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers > The National
Alligator = Boxer > Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers > High Violet > The National
Orbital
In Sides=Brown>Wonky>Middle of Nowhere>Snivilisation>Green>Blue>Altogether
Brown > In Sides > Snivilisation > Wonky > Middle of Nowhere > Green > Altogether > Blue
sounds reasonable
Brown > The Middle Of Nowhere > In Sides > Snivilisation > Wonky > Green > Blue > The Altogether
Snivilisation> Wonky > In Sides >Brown>Middle of Nowhere>Blue>Green> The Altogether
Consensus reached on
Green, Blue and Altogether being the weakest. We can all be friends. We should get together and dance some time!
@Si_Badvibes: Very good rankings. It seems you know Orbital's music very well.
Wildhearts
Chutzpah! > PHUQ > Enless Nameless > Earth Versus > Fishing For Luckies > Wildhearts > Chutzpah! Jnr > Stop Us.... > Must Be Destroyed > Don't Be Happy, Just Worry
holy shit I'd better listen to Chutzpah! then
Fishing For Luckies and Endless Nameless are totally contrasting and totally fucking brilliant, yay 90's
I'd put it more like this
Earth Vs > Endless Nameless > Fishing For Luckies > PHUQ > Chutzpah! > Must Be Destroyed > Wildhearts
you know what
I still haven't listened to Earth Versus yet
it's like being a massive Oasis fan and never having listened to Definitely Maybe
interesting too that Oasis were touted as saviours of British guitar rock with these fellas around
Man get Earth Vs
It's a riffy beast. One of the greatest rock albums most people havent heard
Afghan Whigs
Gentlemen>Black Love>1965=Congregation>Up in It
Although
1965 > Congregation
you may be right
close though
Mogwai (studio albums)
Happy Songs > Hardcore Will Never Die > Come On Die Young > Young Team > Mr Beast > Hawk > Rock Action
well
the appearance of Rock Action at the end there surprised me.
yeah, rock action is possibly my favourite
I was going to say respect for putting Hardcore so high, and then I saw where you put Rock Action
and my jaw dropped
Hawk better than Rock Action? Each to their own I guess
Young Team > Hardcore > Rock Action > Mr Beast > Happy Songs > Come On Die Young > Hawk
Sorry everyone.
literally can't believe this thread hasn't been done before
Come on Die Young > Young Team > Hardcore Will Never Die > Rock Action > Mr Beast > Happy Songs > Hawek is Howling
this one is pretty close to mine
Come on Die Young > Young Team > Hardcore Will Never Die > Rock Action > Hawk is Howling > Mr Beast > Happy Songs
id more or less agree with that...
I'm going for
Happy Songs> Rock Action> Young Team> Hardcore> Ten Rapid> CODY> EP+6> Mr Beast> Hawk
Hardcore is pretty high among all of y'all, am surprised.
Come On Die Young > Happy Songs > Young Team > Rock Action > Hardcore > Mr Beast > Hawk Is Howling
Very hard to pick between the first four though (which is why Government Commissions is so great)
Aphex Twin
Selected Ambient Works 85–92 > ...I Care Because You Do = Richard D. James Album > Selected Ambient Works Volume II > Drukqs
SAW > I Care > SAW II = Drukqs > RDJ
I can't understand how anyone could possibly rank RDJ as their least favourite
RDJ is the only one
that I never want to put on. This might be a good time to play it and see where I'm going wrong.
Alright, I'd certainly forgotten how much I fucking LOVE
Logon Rock Witch, anyway.
Yeah, lovely job.
For me, that album's untouchable. 4, Fingerbib, Girl/Boy Song... It's his most tuneful album, but his most abrasive too. Wonderful stuff.
RDJ > ICBYD > D > SAWII > SAW85-92
SAW85-92 is WAY too low.
Same reason as the guy above - it's the only one I never feel like putting on.
I'd take 26 Mixes, Come To Daddy, Polygon Window, Caustic Window and most of the AFX stuff above that record too. A couple of tracks aside, there's just something about it that doesn't sit right with me. Never understood all the mad love it gets. Guess that's the joy of the guy's back catalogue though.
RDJ > SAW > I Care > SAW II > Drukqs
:(
<3 drukqs
The Decline Of British Sea Power > Open Season > Do You Like Rock Music? > Valhalla Dancehall
Decline Of BSP = Rock Music? > Valhalla Dancehall > Open Season
Decline of BSP> Open Season > Valhalla Dancehall > Do You Like Rock Music?
Open Season>Decline of BSP>Rock Music?>Valhalla Dancehall
Nah
Valhalla Dancehall is better than DYLRM
Open Season > Decline of BSP >>>>>>> Do You Like Rock Music? > Yeah, like I was going to listen to another BSP album after the DYLRM? debacle.
Oasis.
Be Here Now > Definitely Maybe > What's the Story (Morning Glory)? > Don't Believe the Truth > Standing on the Shoulder of Giants > Heathen Chemistry > Dig Out Your Soul.
No way Dig Out Your Soul was their worst
It's pretty dreadful after the first two tracks
Lord Don't Slow Me Down is decent
Lord Don't Slow Me Down
wasn't on Dig Out Your Soul. It was about the same time, but I think it only made it onto Stop The Clocks and some live DVD they did of the same name.
I thought it was a bonus track
Pretty much agree with this
except I'd swap DOYS and SOTSOG
I still believe that if 2 minutes had been cut from every track on Be Here Now it would be regarded as Oasis's best CD
Half of these I've not listened to in years
What's the Story (Morning Glory)? > Definitely Maybe > Be Here Now > Dig Out Your Soul > Heathen Chemistry > Standing on the Shoulder of Giants > Don't Belive the Truth
Queen
Shear Heart Attack > Jazz > Queen 2 > Innuendo > A Night At The Opera > Queen 1 > A Kind Of Magic > A Day At The Races > News Of The World > Works > Miracle > Game > Hot Space > Flash > Made In Heaven
Wilco
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot > A Ghost is Born > Being There > Summerteeth > Sky Blue Sky > The Whole Love > Wilco > AM
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot > A Ghost Is Born > Summerteeth=Being There > The Whole Love > Sky Blue Sky > A.M. > Wilco
Disintegration > Wish > Faith > The Head on the Door > Pornography > Seventeen Seconds > Bloodflowers > Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me > Three Imaginary Boys > The Top > The Cure > 4:13 Dream > Wild Mood Swings
oh, wait! I just saw that the OP used "="
*Disintegration > Wish = Faith = The Head on the Door = Pornography = Seventeen Seconds > Bloodflowers = Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me = Three Imaginary Boys > The Top > The Cure = 4:13 Dream = Wild Mood Swings
hmm
Pornography > The Top > Seventeen Seconds > Faith > Disintegration > Three Imaginary Boys > KMKMKM > Bloodflowers > Wish > The Head On The Door > The Cure > Wild Mood Swings > 4.13 Dream
Hmmm
Achtung Baby > The Unforgettable Fire > War > Pop > Zooropa > Boy > All That You Can't Leave Behind > Rattle & Hum > The Joshua Tree > October > How To Dismantle... > No Line On The Horizon
Achtung Baby is clearly U2's best album. The Joshua Tree should be higher on list.
Wilco
For today, anyway. Excluding the live album and the Mermaid Avenue albums.
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot > Summerteeth > A Ghost Is Born > AM > Being There > The Whole Love > Wilco (The Album) > Sky Blue Sky.
Fight!
That's fighting talk!
We're pretty close to agreeing, anyway. Other than you putting AM at the bottom (give it another listen, it's worth it). I could easily put Ghost and Being There equal to Summerteeth, depending on what day it is.
I'll take that deal.
Pearl Jam
Versus > Yield > Ten > Vitology > Pearl Jam > Riot Act > Backspacer > No Code > Binaural
So wrong about Binaural, Vitalogy top and yield much lower
Vitalogy > Vs > No Code > Ten > Yield ...the rest.
...
Vs > Vitalogy > Yield > No Code > Ten > Pearl Jam > Riot Act > Backspacer > Binaural
Recently revised my opinion having had Vitalogy playing in the car the last few days
VItalogy > Ten > No Code > Vs > Yield > Riot Act > Pearl Jam > Binaural >>> Backspacer
Los Campesinos!

Up > Automatic for the People > Reveal > Monster > New Adventures in Hifi > Murmur > Out of Time > Green > Lifes Rich Pageant > Collapse Into Now > Accelerate > Fables of the Reconstruction > Around the Sun > Document > Reckoning
or
Life's Rich Pagaent, Murmur, Document, Fables, Green, Reckoning, Out of Time....all the rest (gave up after hearing Monster)
You missed out on New Adventures in Hifi and Up?!
Two of their best albums!
Up is great, but is it really their best? The end drags a bit. Around the Sun is the only real turd
Lifes Rich Pageant > Fables > Automatic > Hi-Fi > Reckoning > Up > Monster > Murmur > Out of Time > Document > Green > Accelerate > Collapse Into Now > Around The Sun
forgot Reveal
probably just after Accelerate
No it's
Murmur>Reckoning>Automatic=Green>Document>Life's Rich Pageant>Fables of the Reconstruction=New Adventures in Hi-Fi>Monster>Up>Out of Time>Reveal>Accelerate=Collapse Into Now>Around the Sun
yeah that's not far off how I'd have it
Reckoning is my favourite, gosh
I reckon it's...
Lifes Rich Pageant > Chronic Town EP > > New Adventures In Hi-Fi > Murmur > Monster > Green > Out Of Time > Up > Automatic For The People > Reckoning > Fables Of The Reconstruction > Document > Accelerate > Collapse Into Now > Reveal > Around The Sun
Autechre
Untitled > Amber > Tri Repetae > Quaristice > Incunabula > Oversteps > Chiastic Slide > Confield = Draft 7.30 > LP5
you have two of the most mindmelting pieces of art released this century at joint-second-last
Autechre's early stuff does very, very little for me, then they went incredible. Untilted is probably my number 3, they had it fucking sussed for a few years.
*Untilted
Tri Repetae ++ > Incunabula > Amber > Confield > Draft 7.30 > LP5 > Untitled > Chiastic Slide > Oversteps > Quaristice
++
NICE.
Tri Repetae > Amber > Chiastic Slide > Incunabula > LP5 > Untilted > Quaristice > Oversteps > Draft 7.30 > Confield
I would swap Tri Repetae ++ with Incunabula
Incunabula is my fave Ae album by far.
It`s a good album
But it`s a bit samey and less unique sounding than later albums.
The Wonderstuff
Hup > Never Loved Elvis > The Eight Legged Groove Machine > Construction for the Modern Idiot > Escape From Rubbish Island > Suspended by Stars
Groove Machine=Hup IMO
but the important thing is the first 3=ace.
I most certainly agree with your appraisal of the first 3 albums
Smashing Pumpkins
Mellon Collie = Siamese Dream > Gish > Machina II > Adore > Machina > Oceania > Zeitgeist > Teargarden by Kaleidyscope
Siamese Dream > Gish > Mellon Collie (Disc 1) > Machina > Machina II > Adore > Zeitgeist > Mellon Collie (Disc 2) > Teargarden by Kaleidyscope > Oceania
Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
Mellon Collie disc 2? Are you mental?
Mellon Collie > Siamese Dream > Machina = Adore > Pisces Iscariot > Machina 2 > Gish > Oceaia > Zeitgeist
Doesn't really do them justice though, given the amount of amazing b-sides and non-album tracks...

it's all subjective anyway.

Honey's Dead > Psychocandy > Darklands > Automatic > Munki > Stoned & Dethroned
Release some new stuff you scotch bastards...
Automatic > Honey's Dead > Psychocandy > Darklands > Munki > Stoned and Dethroned
^pretty arbitrary, really, because I love them all more or less equally
Psychocandy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Barbed Wire Kisses (if it counts) > Automatic > Darklands > Honey's Dead > Munki > Stoned and Dethroned
Yeah Honey's Dead.
Totally contrary to the critics but absolutely spot on.
Psychocandy >>>>>> Honey's Dead > Automatic > Darklands > Barbed Wire Kisses > Stoned and Dethroned (not heard Munki). But really, other than having Psychocandy first and Stoned and Dethroned last, everything else is pretty much equal.
American Music Club

Pavement
Brighten The Corners > Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain > Wowee Zowee > Slanted & Enchanted > Terror Twilight
It makes me uneasy seeing Slanted & Enchanted so low
but they're all amazing albums it's hard to justify putting one over the other.
I love all of them dearly, it means very little this order.
I think
Slanted & Enchanted=Crooked Rain>Brighten The Corners=Wowee Zowie>Terror Twilight
perfect except BTC > WZ
never could quite get on board with WZ's "eccentricity"
Brighten The Corners = Slanted & Enchanted > Wowee Zowee > Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain > Terror Twilight
I'm including Westing as well.
S&E > WBSAM > WZ > BTC > CRCR > TT

Pretty Hate Machine > The Downward Spiral = The Slip = With Teeth > Broken = Year Zero > The Fragile (Left) > The Fragile (Right)
Downward Spiral>Broken=Pretty Hate Machine>With Teeth>Year Zero>The Fragile>The Slip
if I may be so bold
I expect people to put Broken higher
and I can accept the fiddling about with PMH, DS, and WT, since I love them all virtually equally, but why people can't seem to get behind The Slip is beyond me.
*PHM
The Slip is up there with Broken / Downward Spiral and PHM for me.
time for a revisit then for me
I think the Fragile is a very underated album
ELO
Time > Face The Music > A New World Record > Out of the Blue > Elderado > Secret Messages > On The Third Day > Discovery > Balance of Power

but to say Discovery was the first album i bought. 1979 I think.

ill split the difference...
Andrew Bird
The Mysterious Production of Eggs > Armchair Apocrypha > The Swimming Hour > Noble Beast > Break It Yourself > Weather Systems

Sister > Daydream Nation > Goo > EVOL > Murray Street > Dirty > Bad Moon Rising = Confusion Is Sex > Sonic Youth > The Eternal = Rather Ripped > Washing Machine > Sonic Nurse > Experimental Jet Set > A Thousand Leaves > The White(y) Album > NYC Ghosts and Flowers
That's my opinion anyway - I haven't included The Silver Sessions or any of the SYR recordings.
dont understand all the gushing for sister
one of their worst in my book
Washing Machine is their best album.
put goo behind confusion is sex
and i think you've got a winner
Manic Street Preachers
Holy Bible > Everything Must Go > Generation Terrorists > This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours > Lifeblood > Send Away the Tigers > Journal For Plague Lovers > Gold Against the Soul > Know Your Enemy > Postcards From A Young Man
yay somebody else likes This is my Truth
It's a let down after Everything Must Go
but it's still an amazing album. I don't understand the hate it gets on these boards.
It's my second favourite, after The Holy Bible.
And I was an obsessive Manics fan for years.
I say
THB > EMG > GATS > GT > Lifeblood > JFPL > SATT > TIMT > KYE > PFAYM
For me it would be...
The Holy Bible, Journal for Plague Lovers, Everything Must Go, Generation Terrorists, Know Your Enemy, Gold Against the Soul, Send Away the Tigers, Postcards from A Young Man, Lifeblood, This is My Truth...
Still a pretty fucking phenomenal list of albums whatever way you cut it...

Vespertine > Homogenic > Post > Debut >> Biophilia = Volta = Medulla
Can't be too many artists with a run of four albums like Debut - Vespertine.
All amazing, but each one better than the last! Went a steeply down hill after that. I remember listening to Medulla over and over waiting for it to come good - it never did :o(

I've missed off Mwng - between Fuzzy Logic and Phantom Power.
I agree with this order but I do love Fuzzy Logic.
this, I think, but I can never make my mind up
yeah RATW is the best one
but I'd have Mwng second! and Hey Venus last. and everything else kinda equal

Kudos on putting Amputechture second, hella underrated.
I'd bump Octahedron up at least one place though.
Eels
Electro-Shock Blues > Beautiful Freak > Tomorrow Morning > Daisies Of The Galaxy > End Times > Shootenanny > Souljacker > Hombre Loco > Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
Tomorrow Morning third!
I thought my Eels list was controversial
I thought mine might be, actually. And I'm still not even sure if I agree with it. Eels are a hard band to do this for. I definitely see where you're coming from with some of your rankings, which makes me question mine even more.
Blinking Lights ... last ...
How even what?
Electro-Shock > Souljacker > Hombre Lobo > Shootenanny > Blinking Lights > Daisies > End Times > Tomorrow Morning > Beautiful Freak
What... what? Beautiful Freak is masterful
Hm, I guess it's the only one I haven't given too many listens.
I seem to remember it sounding a bit AMERICAN ALT-ROCK for my liking, but I could well be wrong there. Should give it another go really.
Electro-Shock Blues > Beautiful Freak = End Times > Daisies Of The Galaxy > Blinking Lights > Shootenanny! > Souljacker > Hombre Lobo > Tomorrow Morning
I thought Tomorrow Morning was the best of the trilogy by far

Swim > Up In Flames > Andorra > Start Breaking My Heart > The Milk of Human Kindness
Eels
Daisies of the galaxy > Electro-shock blues > Hombre Lobo > Shootenanny > Blinking Lights > Souljacker > End Times > Beautiful Freak > Tomorrow Morning
There is a big gap in quality between the 7th and 8th albums on that list. Daisies gets top spot because it's a little easier to play regularly than electro-shock.
Tindersticks
Tindersticks 1 > The Something Rain > Tindersticks 2 > Falling Down a Mountain > Simple Pleasure > The Hungry Saw > Curtains > Waiting For The Moon > Can Our Love
I know no one will agree with me. Curtains is massively overrated. Their three albums prior to The Something Rain are all underrated.
Curtains...
... not overrated for me.
Portishead
Eponymous > Third > Roseland NYC > Dummy
Never understood
the love for the self-titled one- I can't sit through it.
Third > Dummy > Portishead
Pretty much right
I'd put The Life Pursuit slightly ahead of DCW though- and Tigermilk above Sinister.
Sonic Youth
Sister = Daydream Nation > Goo > Confusion is Sex = Dirty > Murray St. > Evol = Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star > A Thousand Leaves = Sonic Nurse > Washing Machine = NYC Ghosts & Flowers > Sonic Youth > Bad Moon Rising > Rather Ripped > The Eternal
... I guess.
bad moon rising = evol > sister = murray street > confusion is sex = e js, t a n s > washing machine = sonic youth> daydream nation > a thousand leaves = nyc ghosts and flowers > dirty> sonic nurse > rather ripped> goo> the eternal
pretty much agree with your top 5
after that not really
I'd have included Sonic Death quite high up as well
even though it's not a studio album
I can't get on board...
with this until everyone starts putting Washing Machine at the tope of their list.
Anything else is madness.
the only really good song on washing machine is the diamond sea though
and thats only one song
washing machine is really inconsistent
definitely one of their worst albums I think
Really?
I'm surprised at the lack of love for Washing Machine.
Ah
I posted my SY list higher up. I'm surprised people like Experimental Jet Set so much.

Been listening to all of these this week
because I'm seeing them in Reykjavik next week. Oh yes!
( ) > Ágætis Byrjun > Takk... > Með Suð I Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust > Valtari > Von
also Heima > Inni
( ) > AB > Valtari > Með Suð I Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust > Tak > Von
No EPs/live albums, this is a proper list.
AS IF Von's the worst, you guys
it's great.
Yes but
worst doesn't mean it's bad. Just not as good as the others.
Valtari's a grower and needs to be listened to on a decent stereo. For that reason it may end up being between Takk and Með Suð.

yeah that's right
the correct answer is:
Rated R> QOTSA> Songs for the Deaf> Lullabies> Era Vulgaris
maybe switch r and st so that its perfectly chronological
:)
Good to see Animals

Monster Magnet
Dopes To Infinity > Superjudge > God Says No > Spine Of God > Monolithic Baby > Powertrip > Mastermind > Tab > 4 Way Diablo
God says no over spine of god?!
Monolithic Baby over Powertrip?!?
Fucking hell.
I'd go: Dopes to Infinity > Superjudge> Spine of God > Powertrip > Tab > God Says No > Monolithic Baby > Mastermind > 4 Way Diablo
I know I''m in a minority, but I love God Says No
Melt, God Says No, Gravity Well, My Little Friend and Cry are amongst my favourites. Spine has Sins..., Medicine, Spine Of God which are all crackers, but GSN just edges it,
MB has so much good stuff too, though Powertrip has my 2 faves (Temple Of Your Dreams and of course Space Lord). There are some other fine songs on Powertrip (Crop,Power Trip, Bummer, Tractor) but MB has more great songs for me.
Don't want to be an obscure-early-work arse here
but have you checked out the self-titled EP and their first two cassette demos (We're Stoned, What Are You Going To Do About It and Forget About Life, I'm High On Dope)? Best MM I've heard.
Spine of God > Tab > Superjudge > Dopes to Infinity > Powertrip > Monolithic Baby
not heard the rest, and I'm not really a huge fan of anything after Superjudge in this list

Elephant last??? What??? Really??? Explain yourself!
Here's mine:
Elephant>White Blood Cells>Icky Thump>De Stijl>Get Behind Me Satan>The White Stripes
Since the day it came out
I've never gotten the fuss over elephant, especially coming after WBC. Two e.gs - 'There's no home for you' is a rip off but not as good as 'Dead Leaves & Dirty Ground'. Also 'Well it's true that we love one another' is their worst song by far.

Building Nothing Out Of Something > The Moon & Antarctica = The Lonesome Crowded West > This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About > Good News For People Who Love Bad News > Sad Sappy Sucker > We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
Totally different from any MM list I've ever done before, but i genuinely think Building is their strongest collection of songs - M&A and LCW obvious have better overall themes and stories but right now I'm feeling the consistency of Building.
also have much love for Building...
but
Lonesome... > Moon & Antarctica > Building Nothing... > Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks > Sad Sappy Sucker = The Fruit That Ate Itself > Long Drive... = Good News... > We Were Dead...
yeah as soon as I wrote it I disagreed with myself
Really it's more like M&A=LCW > Building

Surfer Rosa = Doolittle > Come on Pilgrim > Bossanova > Trompe Le Monde
D > TLM > SR > B > COP
surfer rosa > doolittle > come on pilgrim >> bossanova >>>>>>> trompe le monde
Surfer Rosa > Come On Pilgrim > Doolittle > Trompe Le Monde > Bossanova
I think. Very little distance between each.
Doolittle > TLM = B = SR > CoP
TLM = B = D = SR = CoP
surfer rosa & c'mon pilgrim are on the same cd anyway
so
sr/cop > tlm > d > b
Impossible to do the Pixies-
-whichever one I am listening to is the best. Took me ages to get Trompe Le Monde but probably the one I listen to most now.

Age of Adz > All Delighted People EP > Seven Swans = Illinois > Michigan > A Sun Came
Haven't included Enjoy your Rabbit or BQE cos I've never got all the way through them, and not sure if Avalanche or Songs for Christmas count.
Avalanche counts, Come on! you included All Delighted People EP
Age of Adz > Illinois = Seven Swans > Songs For Christmas > The Avalanche > Michigan > The BQE > Enjoy Your Rabbit > A Sun Came
Oh shit, All Delighted People comes after Michigan.
At least we all agree on what's top...
Age of Adz > Illinois > Michigan > Seven Swans > Enjoy Your Rabbit > A Sun Came
Public Enemy
Fear of a Black Planet > It Takes a Nation of Millions > Yo! Bum Rush the Show > Greatest Misses (if it counts) > Apocalypse 91 > Muse Sick > all the others

*promises to listen to the early ones a bit more*
I'm gonna do a top 5 too then
Hex Enduction Hour > This Nation's Saving Grace > Dragnet > Live At The Witch Trials > Perverted By Language
oh shit shit I forgot
Perverted By Language ahead of Bend Sinister, easily, and ahead of YFOC too. almost ahead of HEH. but not.

the argument = end hits > repeater = red medicine > killtaker > 13 songs = steady diet
Red Medicine...
was their first album I got. To this day I think it's a masterpiece from beginning to end. (could prattle on about it all day). I always thought EH sounded a bit like Pearl Jam which put me off. Agreed low placing for Steady Diet, though, I kinda just wait for KYEO which is boss. All their recs are uniquely brilliant though :)
that's pretty much mine though I'd swap red medicine and kill taker
there's not much in it though
NEIL YOUNG...but not live stuff

Haven't listened to Hawks and Doves, Re-ac-Tor and Old Ways (or Americana) to list them (but they'd be low...)
Not heard them all, but of those I have
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere > After The Goldrush > Harvest > On The Beach > Zuma > Tonight's The Night > Rust Never Sleeps > Sleeps With Angels > Harvest Moon > Ragged Glory
Sun Araw
Beach Head = On Patrol > Heavy Deeds > The Inner Treaty > Ancient Romans
Doesn't really matter about the order though - all of them are resplendant

Rain Dogs > Swordfishtrombones > Bone Machine > Small Change > Bad As Me > Frank's Wild Years > Blue Valentine > Closing Time > Heartattack & Vine > Real Gone > Mule Variations > Alice > The Black Rider > Blood Money > Foreign Affairs > In The Heart of Saturday Night.
(tricky since the middle bank are all very close in their four star quality. really just depends on mood).
Orphans
is the best though, even if it doesn't count on this list
Still not heard Bad As Me, but should do
Franks Wild Years > Swordfishtrombones > Rain Dogs > Bone Machine > Blue Valentine > Small Change > The Black Rider > Mule Variations > Alice > Blood Money > Heartattack & Vine > Closing Time > Real Gone > The Heart Of Saturday Night > Foreign Affairs > Nighthawks At The Diner

Asleep In The Back > Cast Of Thousands > Leaders Of The Free World > Build A Rocket Boys > The Seldom Seen Kid
although the last 3 all ahve a song or 2 that i'd rather they didn't
Leaders of The Free World frustrates me
I like every song on it but it doesn't click together. Would've been better as 2 EPs imo.
AITB > CoT > SSK > LotFW > BARB
The Blue Nile
Hats > A Walk Across the Rooftops > High > Peace at Last
This is my order, and I suspect this is the general agreement. Do any fans want to offer something different?
Six.BySeven
The Closer You Get > Six.BySeven 04 > If Symptoms Persist, Kill Your Doctor > Left Luggage At The Peverel Hotel > The Things We Make > Artists Cannibals Poets Thieves > Club Sandwich At The Peverel Hotel > The Way I Feel Today
Nice to see 04 getting some love
But TWIFToday? Last? Dear me...
still got some good songs on it (and one incredible song)
but fah me ya know it doesn't really gel into a consistent listening experience, and the average song-quality isn't up with their usual brilliance
04 is one of the most astonishingly-recorded albums I've ever heard. What people say The Stooges sound like - pure, swaggering rock and roll, coming in waves rather than chugs, with a bit of Krautrock and a bit of floaty existential dronesurfing. Amazing. Very nearly put it first but TCYG's songwriting and variety swayed it.
Van der Graaf Generator

CARDIACS
you knew this was coming
Sing To God > (Pony, if it counts) > Guns > Heaven Born And Ever Bright > On Land And In The Sea > ALMAHATWWW > The Seaside > early fumblings
Tim Smith's Extra Special OceanLandWorld would probably be above Guns if I ever found the whole thing rather than incredible and tantalising Youtube clips
really do think they improved in the 90's too, which isn't the most popular opinion, but this is bearing in mind I regard the 80's stuff as already godhead
I tend to count Songs for ships and Irons as an album
Though it's more of a collection i suppose
That said: Sing to God > On Land and In the Sea > Guns > Heaven Born... > Songs for Ships and irons > A Little Man... > The Seaside
I'm in agreement that the 90s stuff is even better (just) but On Land... has an incredible run of songs from Fast Robert onwards
Deerhoof
The Runners Four > Apple O' > Friend Opportunity > Offend Maggie > Breakup Song > Reveille > Milk Man > Green Cosmos > Deerhoof vs. Evil > The Man, The King, The Girl > Holdypaws = Halfbird
nice
I agree
I don't have TMTKTG or Halfbird but...
Apple O' > Reveille > Friend Opportunity > The Runners Four > Breakup Song > Green Cosmos = Milk Man > Offend Maggie > Deerhoof vs Evil > Holdypaws. Agree that Breakup Song rates favourably in their canon.
I cannot condone any ranking that doesn't place Runners Four firmly at the top
I'm sorry I just can't I'm sorry

Everything Into Position > Effloresce > Music For Nurses > Frames > Home And Minor > Self Preserved...
interesting #1 choice!
tbh there's no significant difference between the top 4, and then the last album was just a bit crap (apart from the first 2 tracks and It's My Tail, which would have made an incredible mini-EP)
EiP is first for the Last Wrongs as much as anything else
the last album had it's moments for sure but on the whole was awfully disappointing.

Flowers of Romance no 1?
I love the album but putting above Metal Box is madness. madness!
Rationale:
Metal Box is truly amazing, but there is not ONE song on FoR that I don't like...it was a bit more accessible to me when it first came out (THEN I started to 'get' Metal Box...)
Just noticed a trend...
I seem to like a band's 3rd album the best with the first album I ever heard by them coming in 2nd. Not sure if that's true with other bands.....
Arab Strap
Philophobia > Monday at the hug and pint = Mad for sadness > The red thread > Philophobia > The last romance > Cunted circus > The week never starts round here

Second toughest in the infants > Dubnobasswithmyheadman > Beaucoup fish >> Oblivion with bells > Everything everything >>> A hundred days off >> Barking
dubnobass
not only much better than second toughest but much better than pretty much any other dance-oriented electronic album you care to name.
'Second toughest in the infants' has two tracks that could be better
These 2 are Rowla and Air Towel. They seem unfinished and go nowhere. Instead Rowla, they could replace it with the amazing Cherry Pie (from Pearl's Girl CD). It's quite similar to Rowla, it has the same beginning, but MUCH BETTER.

Was gonna do this! Um...
English Settlement > Black Sea > Nonsuch > Apple Venus vol 1 > Chips from the Chocolate Fireball > Drums and Wires > Go 2 > Skylarking > The Big Express > Wasp Star > Mummer > White Music > Oranges And Lemons
please bear in mind that Nonsuch was my first exposure to the band...
Hmmmm
I think you need to give Skylarking more attention. Loses its way a bit, but front-loaded with a hearty fistful of their very best songs.
I'd actually say I preferred the second half!
The first few songs are all *good* but not much really blows me away except the middle-eight of Ballet For A Rainy Day (oh those middle-eights) - the tone is a bit too brief, light and spangly for me. My favourite track on the album and the only one I'd call an XTC favourite of mine is Another Satellite, which is probably the most atypical track on the album, as well as the longest and most slow-burning. Yes I'm mental etc etc
Butthole Surfers
Locust Abortion Technician > Rembrandt Pussyhorse/Cream Corn > piouhgd > Psychic Powerless etc > Independent Worm Saloon > Hairway To Steven > Electric Larryland > daylight > Weird Revolution
What's daylight?
Locust Abortion Technician > Hairway to Steven > Psychic Powerless... > Butthole Surfers > Independent Worm Saloon = Electriclarryland > Rembrandt Pussyhorse > Humpty Dumpty LSD > Pioughd > Weird Revolution
Daylight = a wide quality gap between the former & the latter
Can never understand why everybody rates Piouhgd so low and Hairway To Steven so high. Piouhgd has some dreadful stuff on it but the good tracks, fucking hell, just awesome. HTS on the other hand has an all-time-classic first track, a pretty good last track, and a yawning chasm of utter dreck in between.
ah, oh yes
I love the unpredictable exploratory vibe on Hairway (and the riffs!). All the songs feel fully realized to me. Piouhgd seems to contain a fair amount of chaff, though, and rehashes of old ideas (Lonesome Bulldog and Something). Listening again now, though, and loving Revolution!

I'd definitely put Milk-Eyed Mender above Have One on Me

Mclusky / FOTL
Travels > Difference > Do Dallas > Curses > Pain and Sadness > Plot Against
You people are all crazy!
Latest FOTL is up near Do Dallas and Travels should be last.
There is no universe in which Travels should be last.
I think I might go:
Difference > Travels > Dallas > Curses > Plot > Pain
Travels v. Dallas is pretty tough though.
Maybe I've
been harsh on Plot - I'll boost it above Pain, largely because of Robocop 4 being incredible. But it is clearly a far cry from Falco's best work. Travels last!?!?!?!?
Never really grabbed me in the way the latest has.
Travels has some of FOTL best songs but also a fair bit of dross.

idk how you all remember this stuff
even my proper favourite bands, if they've got more than 3 or 4 records i just don't remember, it's never really come up tbf.
alright cat_race
how do you know which is your 6th favourite sebadoh record. you don't. nobody really knows.
vs Helmet
i really like that one
PINK PINK PINK PINK
Bakesale>Bubble and Scrape>Harmacy>III>Rocking the forecast>The Sebadoh>vs Helmut
Rocking the forecast? the forest, obviously
The Sebadoh is amazing, you helmet
only if you're one of those fake arse sebadoh fans
who got into them after hearing flame.
Hehe, maybe.
Actually, I clearly remember browsing amps in Richer Sounds in Norwich while wearing a Pixies t-shirt, and the guy behind the counter said I should check out The Sebadoh cos I'd probably like it. I did. It's all a bit silly and overblown and overpolished, but I kinda like that. Some great songs on there. Very different to their other stuff, but I think it's a lot stronger than some people make out. Um, you helmet.
*helmut
I don't think its that overblown or overpolished. I mean, it is compared to the early stuff but not in the grand scheme of things. And it wasn't as if I was like, omg they've totally changed, where's all the tape hiss because I really, really like flame. I just don't think the songs are as good, Jason's songs especially. And I assume Lou saved all his best ones for the Folk Implosion album.
Fair point on the Jason songs, but he gets a free pass for writing Drag Down.
Tune. Anyway, time to stop arguing this one - tbf I probably only like it cos it's the first album of theirs I heard. I'm not sure it's actually any good. Break Free is a lovely song though. /End
Freed Man (remastered/expanded) > Smash the Punk Rock > III (expanded) > Bubble and Scrape > Bakesale
not heard any others
Nah, that's rubbish
If I really like a band, I'm more likely to know which is 11th favourite B-Side by them than my favourite album of a band I only quite like
is that an active decision you've made to rank those things?
that seems mental. and if it's not deliberate, that seems impossible to do.
Most definitely an active decision
I don't understand why you find that so odd.
doesn't seem like a productive use of time or to have any tangible benefit
but who am i to tell you how to enjoy yourself
And DiS is?

I'd swap Ravedeath and HMHMDIA, but otherwise good job.
I was tempted to put Ravedeath = HMHMDIA actually
Also, putting Radio Amor 4th doesn't seem right either, it's too good, but there's no other way.
No one trying The Mountain Goats?
I can't, too scared.

Fur & Gold = Two Suns = The Haunted Man
All brilliant, honestly struggling to pick a favourite though.

Substance > Power corruption and lies > Technique > Low-life > Brotherhood > Movement > Get ready > Republic > Waiting for the sirens call
Singles > Substance > Technique > Power corruption and lies > Get ready > Low-life > Brotherhood > Republic > Movement > Waiting for the sirens call
still cant believe you put singles highest
even ignoring the fact it's a compilation
it's the 7" edits of the songs, nowhere near the majesty of the full lengths as contained in substance
the only reason i can think you've done that is cos it has more songs on it
but please - just listen to it, then listen to substance & tell me the versions on singles don't pale by comparison to their counterparts.
(then redo it without compilations)
Believe it. New Order have many great singles. I don't care if it's a compilation or not. To have all their singles is awesome. Plus NO had the bad habit to skip excellent singles from the final tracklisting of their albums (e.g. Blue Monday).
Substance is great, but NO released other singles since then (Round & Round, Fine Time, Run, Regret, World, Spooky, Crystal, Here to Stay, Krafty etc).
Their studio albums are way too short to compete with a 31 singles compilation.
Technique > Substance > Low-life > Power corruption and lies > Movement > Republic > Brotherhood
did them just after joy division above
didnt include compilations though
if you're going to include substance, why not international, retro, the best of, the rest of, singles, 20 years of... etc

Kraftwerk
Minimum-Maximum > Computer World > The Man Machine = Trans-Europe Express > The Mix > Tour De France > Electric Cafe > Autobahn > Radio-Activity > Ralf and Florian > Kraftwerk 1 = Kraftwerk 2
Sorry but that's the most retarded Kraftwerk rating I've ever seen
Not putting Trans Europe Express at the top of the list, well I guess I could live with that. But putting Kraftwerk 1 at the end?? jesus christ. And rating Radio-Activity lower than Electric Cafe. I'm speechless.
WTH, we don't have the same brains. This is MY list. Post yours. Jesus...
"But putting Kraftwerk 1 at the end?? jesus christ. "
It's probably my least favorite Kraftwerk album. The first three albums are too different compared to later (better) work.
"And rating Radio-Activity lower than Electric Cafe."
Actually they're almost the same level for me. The difference is slight.
OK then
TEE > K1 > Computer World > Man Machine > Radio-Activity > K2 > Min-Max > Tour de France > The Mix > Autobahn > Electric Cafe > Ralf & Florian
The is the correct & definitive Kraftwerk rating, accept no substitutes.
So, you'd rather listen to K1 & K2 than Min-Max? This is w.e.i.r.d.
Minimum-Maximum is the highest achievement of Kraftwerk. Not that it sounds crystal clear, but it also contains tons of classics. And all these songs (except perhaps The Model) sound better than the album versions. This is like New Order's "Substance" compilation.
I've seen Kraftwerk live in 2009 so I know what I'm talking about...
lol@last sentence
Fair enough though. I mean as long as people are listening to Kraftwerk at all, that's got to be a good thing.
Update
Minimum-Maximum > Computer World > The Man Machine = Trans-Europe Express > The Mix > Tour De France > Autobahn > Electric Cafe = Radio-Activity > Ralf and Florian = Kraftwerk 1 = Kraftwerk 2

you're all ranking them, not rating them
you ignorant fucknuts
Did you see the example posted by OP?
Then shut up.
Plus by ranking we indirectly rate them: album x > album y means that album x is better than y
Plus: "No fluff, no numbers." Who's the ignorant fucknut then?
did you see the example posted by OP?
yes I did, he's an ignorant fucknut too
'Plus by ranking we indirectly rate them: album x > album y means that album x is better than y'
that is ranking them, not rating them, you ignorant fucknut
'Plus: "No fluff, no numbers." Who's the ignorant fucknut then?'

I wrote it twice by mistake. This DiS forum doesn't allow me to edit it. Deal with it.

Missing Kicking Against The Pricks and From Her To Eternity but here's my stab at it:

Emperor Tomato Ketchup?
Hmm, Freudian omission
Not their worst album, but their biggest disappointment.
I'd put it between Aluminium Tunes and Margerine Eclipse
Actually my second favourite
I'd have Dots and Loops about seven spots higher than you've got it, too.
Apart from that pretty much agree.
(The BBC thing was good too but I don't know if that counts...)
I tried to get into ETK, but it seems too repetitive
What's their most accessible/catchy album?
Think you're probably best starting from the beginning and working through
Their mid nineties period is the stuff I like best, but I guessing from your comment that you wouldn't be into this sound as much. Their earlier stuff is certainly a bit more accessible. Great, great band - hopefully you'll get well into them...

Born To Run > Darkness On The Edge Of Town > Nebraska > The River > Born In The USA > Tunnel Of Love > Magic > The Rising > The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle > The Ghost Of Tom Joad > Welcome To Asbury Park, NJ > The Seeger Sessions > Devils & Dust > Wrecking Ball > Lucky Town > Working On A Dream > Human Touch
This is dangerously similar to mine
Born to Run > Darkness on the Edge of Town > Nebraska > The River > The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle > Born in the USA, The Ghost of Tom Joad > Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ > Tunnel of Love > The Rising > Magic > The Seeger Sessions > Wrecking Ball > Devils and Dust > Working on a Dream > Lucky Town > Human Touch.
I love how his two worst albums in my opinion were released on the same day. I'm glad I wasn't old enough at the time to suffer that crushing blow.
The thing is, I actually think highly of every album on that list up to and including Wrecking Ball.
Barring a couple of songs off each, I'll probbaly never listen to the other three again.

Wow, you've got Frank Black & The Catholics really low there
Fucking love that album, for all its faults. Comes in at #2 on my list, right after Teenager.
yeh
It's kind of a new one to me, so I don't know it so well. Reckon Dog in the Sand would should maybe move up too.
If they mixed Frank's voice on that album a little lower
and if Lyle Workman didn't feel the need to jizz quite so enthusiastically over every song with awful cock-rocking guitar solos, FB & The Catholics would be one of my favourite albums of all time. Such great songs. And I love the 2-track production.

Patashnik > Substrata = Cirque > Shenzhou > N-Plants > Microgravity
Don't know the others...
Patashnik = Substrata > Microgravity > Cirque > N-Plants > Dropsonde = Shenzhou > Insomnia > Man With a Movie Camera > Auteur De La Lune
It's very hard to decide what's the best album: Substrata or Patashnik.
If Autour de la Lune is at the bottom of your list
then I'm really going to have to check out some other Biosphere albums, coz I certainly love that one. Shenzhou's the only other one I've heard - also great - and Geir Jenssen's "Cho Oyu 8201m" is fucking amazing.
You're in for a bit of a treat
He has to be one of the most consistent ambient artists out there for quality. Start with Patashnik (techno-y in places) and then try Substrata for a beatless comparison.
Some think that Auteur de la Lune is great. For me is way too minimalistic.
Also it really worth checking Biosphere's entire discography. It's pretty hard to rank his albums because they're all great on their own.
During the 5-6 years since I discovered this artist, I listened the most to Patashnik, Substrata, Microgravity, Cirque and N-Plants. Fantastic albums.
PS: I forgot to add two other albums: Wireless - Live at the Arnolfini, Bristol & Nordheim Transformed (feat Deathprod). Both, very good.
I guess the essential 3 albums are Microgravity, Patashnik and Substrata.
If you like ambient music, it's impossible to not enjoy listening to these albums. Substrata in special, works as a one long song. It must be listened from start to end, in order.
Also I recommend you to listen to the albums chronologically.
As a sample, check probably the best song from Substrata, 'The Things I Tell You'
