:(
just listen to andrew wk.
pretty much 70% of music
knock yourself out
You're right. but I can't seem to think of anything specific immediately.
I need help with specifics.
Beulah - Delta
:(
For me, Rice Is Nice by mclusky over and over and over.
this came out today
http://tinyurl.com/9mnhq9b
Converge
Guess I'm Doing Fine by Beck
or any of the tracks on Seachange really.
Go for...
Broken Heart by Spiritualized over and over and over again. Ten listens gives you over an hour of string-drenched weepy times.
After that you'll be so fucked off with melancholia you'll just want to get out of the house for a bit. Which will be A GOOD THING.
Stars Of The Lid - And Their Refinement Of The Decline
worked for me in the more contemplative moments a few years ago. Like, listened to every day for maybe two months straight.
Also, listen to S. She's brilliant in any context but especially post-heartbreak. It's an enlightening change to not listen to mopey male perspectives too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uxO-5C1i_Y&feature=list_other&playnext=1&list=AL94UKMTqg-9AEh7iP3OVe3MB7p2fKZWLQ
S is really good, thanks. Not got on to Stars Of The Lid yet but will follow your lead and give it a listen at a contemplative moment.
Glad to hear
I've been trying to spread to good word about S. Seems that with a name like that, though, she's actively trying to avoid being 'discovered'. Incredible talent though, she's basically a raw nerve, brutally honest lyrics in a fragile musical shell. Really reminds me of Elliott Smith in many ways.
talons'
rustic bull...
posted this in a similar thread before but what the hell
ms mr - time of my life [Patrick Wolf cover]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfF-qQT__s4
Oh hi
I've started a Spotify playlist. It's brief now but will probably end up massive.
http://open.spotify.com/user/thesmallerpicture/playlist/4t5giDKJBD5dorb1RkrxNR
Blu Cantrell - Breathe
A rare up beat break up song
Is 'Don't Think Twice it's Alright' by Bob Dylan.
My favourite wallowing one is 'I've Been a Mess' by American Music Club
After you've gone through the inevitable sad period
get angry at your ex and blast the Cooper Temple Clause's first album, See This Through and Leave.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6aXZ1NhTIY
I WOULD HAVE MADE US A KILLER MOVIEEEEE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hqbfexj2Os
Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye - Leonard Cohen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jexNsBjz1r8
Jeff Buckley- Last Goodbye
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtS0rwQK_pI
Mystery Jets- The Girl is Gone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oZsG96z7Vs
Came here to post Last Goodbye
But About Today by The National had me in pieces after I broke up with my ex. Saddest song ever:
http://youtu.be/v7T2135xCZQ
Last Goodbye gets the tears flowing now...
God knows what it would do to me if I ever break up with my girlfriend.
Thanks
bump
Elliott Smith - I Didn't Understand
hope you're doing ok
oh god.
A Northern Soul (the entire album) by The Verve
American Music Club - Ex-girlfriend
Mine were
Let's Wrestle- 'Tanks'
Band of Horses- 'No One Is Ever Gonna Love You'
Townes Van Zandt- 'For The Sake of the Song'
Eels- 'Ugly Love'
Johnny Cash- 'Hurt'
Frightened Rabbit - Midnight Organ Fight
you don't need anything else
so much this
This is massively hitting the spot
thanks.
Hmm
I highly recommend the band Fishing For Sympathy and their album "Woe Is Me and My Insignificant Breakup"
oh, get stuffed.
Girls are so good at stompin' hypersensitive hearts...seriously, listen to some black metal to neutralize the woman's snake-like antics. Remember that girls are nothing but evil, overgrown baby chasms :)
i don't think that's going to work
genius
Will You Still Care For Me by The Crocketts
Eels - End Times
This came out right around the time I went through a pretty bad break up. It destroyed me / helped me in equal measures.
yeah I've been listening to a lot of Eels. excellent shout.
loads of Daniel Johnston bits
You Put My Love Out The Door
My Baby Cares For The Dead
Some Things Last A Long Time
E. Smith - Pitseleh
Nas - Bye Baby
Spiritualized - Broken Heart (actually just all of Ladies and Gentlemen)
Fucked Up - Turn the Season
Brand New - Seventy Times Seven (actually just all of New Favourite Weapon)
Oh and We are never getting back together by Taylor Swift.
Bright Eyes - Fevers and Mirrors
The Crimea - Square Moon
both full of songs of heartbreak.
So much ^this for Fevers and Mirrors
But particularly Haligh Haligh and Calendar Hung itself
Haligh Haligh must be one of the best break up songs even
Now we speak in ruined tongues
and the words we say aren't meant for anyone,
it's just a mumbled sentence to passing aquentence
where there was once you
Redhouse Painters
Medicine Bottle
&
Katy Song
and pretty much all the others
The Moon by The Microphones
It was recommended to me once and it became a close companion for a while.
Moon Sequel
On that Mount Eerie album is just the emptiest thing I've ever heard.
:''''(
The Wrens- '13 Months In 6 Minutes'
Thee More Shallows - More Deep Cuts
Wild Beasts - Smother
The Stills - Logic...
Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It
Lapalux - When You're Gone EP
Jeniferever - Choose A Bright Morning
For some quality wallowing,
chin up
Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie
The song, not the album. although, maybe the album.
Album of the Year by The Good Life.
How could I forget this! Wonderful album.
Inmates is amazing and A New Friend is :(
The First Days of Spring by Noah and the Whale
A whole break up album. Their second album, about Charlie Fink's split from Laura Marling. Don't be put off by anything else you've heard by them on the radio; this is fantastic.
really wasn't expecting to like this
but it's absolutely killing me
woah there, tracks 5 and 6. not ready for you just yet.
Joanna Newsom - Does Not Surfice
Hot Buttered Soul by Issaaaac Hayes
The ultimate......
Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole by Martha Wainwright. Brilliant.
I think that one is about his father
His father, or hers?
I want you - Elvis Costello
Specially if you've been betrayed
I love that this is on the same (amazing) record as I Hope You're Happy Now
Because to my mind they're pretty much the two best break-up songs ever, and yet totally different - one as dark and bleak as possible, the other one practically punching the air and laughing about the whole ridiculous thing.
'I Don't Like the Man I Am' by Pete Molinari,
A cover of the Wild Billy Childish & The Buff Medways song.
I'll Kill Her by Soko
Thanks guys
Some really good stuff to keep me going in there
Keep em coming if you think of any more.
Late to the cry-party
But, on the bus earlier, I almost had an extremely unmanly moment listening to She Sends Kisses by the Wrens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8xaUuZaIsI
cc: ‘Songs that you genuinely think are perfect’ thread
definitely not too late, don't worry
luckily I don't have to worry so much about my manliness, so I'll let the moment wash over me with full force
My favourite Wrens song. Stunning.
This
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV0LJ0Dnl7A
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yl7kA_i8zrg
Wheat - Don't I Hold You
I dig this one out often here - but I don't care, as it's one of the best tracks ever. And definitely a break up song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPClKch4ABU
When me and my girlfriend broke up in 2006 I made her the saddest CD ever
It had all the hits on it, and I'm going to list them because I've got too much time on my hands:
1. Lisa Brown - Hey I Really Love You
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trc7Efw_b-U
2. Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtS0rwQK_pI
3. Elbow - Powder Blue
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u15JygmXM8
4. Feist - Inside and Out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmG0sPyZJBg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySQlU3hussQ
21. Blur - No Distance Left To Run
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KFIr4SlRGg
NB - the only reason I know what's on it is because we got back together two years later. It obviously worked.
tl;dr and thinly veiled and all that.
oh goodness
there's some real tearjerkers in there
The live Jeff Buckley medley of Hallelujah & I know it's Over (Smiths) will probably get you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ff_nvF_3Joo
Also, ELO's Telephone Line, especially the lines
Hey. How you feelin?
Are you still the same?
Don't you realise the things we did, we did, were all for real, not a dream?
I just can't believe
They've all faded out of view
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2ds8tCtomQ&feature=related
unwittingly, you've hit a bit too close to home with the ELO. would be a brilliant suggestion otherwise though.
that's what makes it such a great track
the pathos is perfect
he's having a conversation with someone who's not there
which is exactly what you do in your head when someone you've shared so many times with is suddenly removed from your everyday
See also Julian Cope's Me Singing
http://open.spotify.com/track/1hvPtzvvPz9ihImMqPpb8o
yes. what I meant is, it's got actual memories and stuff attached to it. ELO's gonna be a no-go zone for a while.
ELO should always be a no-go zone to be fair
*ducks*
so wrong
When you feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel:
Johnny Cash - I won't back down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiLiTpBfpQM
I'm just going to leave it at this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsDAEWBuiWo
Eels - Electro Shock Blues album
this is possibly my favourite album ever
and was my first port of call a few days ago. props to you
Writing this same thread two years ago is what got me into American Football...
... the whole album is pure break-up stuff, but this track especially (already posted by StormJH above), is what really clinched it for me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV0LJ0Dnl7A
Can't find the old thread, but it had some corkers in it. Best of luck to you
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
is an incredible break-up album.
I'm going to say it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y96lERZa-mk&feature=share&list=PLEF1D68F8C491B47C
any more?
don't desert me now guys, i still need you
