My 1000 Song Playlist 1963 - 2012
Hi, I've just signed up to the forum and thought I'd share with everyone a music project I've just started.
As the title suggests it's a 1000 song playlist containing 20 songs per year over the last 50 years. I'm doing it as a Xmas present for someone but also a large part for myself, firstly to have what should be a kick-ass playlist to play on shuffle, but mainly to broaden my music horizons. Whilst I love music, I am well aware that my knowledge is limited and I haven't scratched the surface to a lot of good material that is out there in terms of time period and genre.
So I'm not putting this out there for it to get shot down in flames (hopefully), I fully encourage suggestions of songs I may want to include and opinions, discussion more than welcome.
There are many different factors in why a song has been included. I have tried to include a variety of genres where possible, providing I enjoy the song. Things like historical significance, pop-culture references, personal nostalgia may also factor. I have researched the best I can giving the time-scale that I have, downloading best of sixties torrents etc, looking up billboard charts per year so pretty much all the songs will be rather mainstream with little or no album tracks included. I hope that when it is finished it will be a decent representation of the last 50 years of music, to my taste.
Anyway, here is the first one, 1963.
1. Louie Louie - The Kingsmen
2. I Want To Hold Her Hand - The Beatles
3. I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles
4. Surfin USA - The Beach Boys
5. Surfin Bird - The Trashmen
6. Ring Of Fire - Johnny Cash
7. I Only Want To Be With You - Dusty Springfield
8. Twist and Shout - The Beatles
9. Walk Like a Man - Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
10. It's All Right - The Impressions
11. Love Me Do - The Beatles
12. She Loves You - The Beatles
13. From Me To You - The Beatles
14. Glad All Over - The Dave Clark Five
15. Be My Baby - The Ronettes
16. In Dreams - Roy Orbison
17. Please Please Me - The Beatles
18. In My Room - The Beach Boys
19. Since I Fell For You - Lenny Welsh
20. Blowin' In The Wind - Bob Dylan
Note - all selections are based on the year the album was released (as per Wikipedia), not when the single was released in the charts.
This year I found one of the hardest due to the fact it is just before the big influx of rock of the mid-late 60's which is more up my street. I am very conscious that it is very Beatles heavy but I was struggling to find anything I considered better to include for that year. On the flip side 'discovering' The Beatles and Bob Dylan was a big positive already at this early stage as I never truely paid much attention to their work.

Bob Dylan
The Beatles
The Beach Boys
This should be interesting.
This looks good.
Please include spotify playlists if you find the time.
I have never used spotify but if there is enough interest I will do it. Probably won't be until after I've finished the playlist though as I still have another 38 to do before xmas.
+1 for Spotify list please.
might be a little bit better as a YouTube playlist
given the gaps in Spotify's catalogue, but you can export it from Spotify using, but if you're doing this as an iTunes playlist, it may allow you to export those to Spotify anyway http://tomahawk-player.org/

19. A Change Is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke
20. The Times They Are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan
Interesting about 'Eight Days A Week' in that it was never released as a single in the UK despite being a no.1 hit in America. Lennon described the song as "lousy" and wasn't played at live shows. It is actually one of my favorite Beatles song but I suppose one of the great things about music is it's polorisation from one person to the next.
I had also never heard 'A Change is Gonna Come' before which is a great song! Check it out if you haven't heard it.
this is gonna be a great thread
Too much Beatles
sorry - but I think you need to be looking a bit harder.
Suggestions welcomed
A lot of my research is done around the yearly top 100 lists on digitaldreamdoor and after trawling through 1963 I found it a rather poor year in my opinion, which is why it is so Beatles saturated. Subsequent years are much more balanced.
Anyway, I appreciate the feedback.
Mmm...1963
How about:
Bob & Earl "Harlem Shuffle"
Bobby Vinton "Blue Velvet"
The Chiffons "He's So Fine"
The Crystals "Then He Kissed Me"
Dion "Ruby Baby"
The Drifters "On Broadway"
Garnet Mimms "Cry Baby"
Jan & Dean "Surf City"
Martha & The Vandellas "Heatwave"
Marvin Gaye "Can I Get a Witness"
Peter Paul & May "Tiny Sparrow"
Stevie Wonder "Fingertips Part 2"
Also -
Try www.rateyourmusic.com for good inspiration. Just do a search on singles/albums and EPs from any given year.
some really good suggestions in there
I'm pretty sure I have already listened to the majority of these but I will give them another try.
Thank you for the suggestions.
Well..
Then you are just crazy if you think that the Beatles version of Twist and Shout, or Please Please Me, are better than any of those ;)
Ha, twist and shout and please please me are two of the songs I will be dropping. After a brief listen I'm looking to include "Can I get a witness", "Cry baby" and maybe another.
Again, I appreciate the suggestions. I was really struggling with this year and wasn't very happy with the final list.
Could do with more Dylan album tracks in place of some of the Beatles ones
(no more imaginative really but better)
you're pretty buggered from the off.....
.....considering you won't find any tracks from the most 'overrated band in the history of music' on Spotify....you may wanna first investigate what's available to list.
Spotify never entered my mind when doing this. It's all done through I-tunes and will be sync'd to an I-pod as a xmas present.
Most overrated band in history isn't on Spotify?
I swear I saw some Radiohead on there the other day. AMIRITE GUYS?!
How many songs do you listen to when coming up with your top 20 for each year?
I've downloaded the rolling stones magazine top 500, Bacoben(?) rock top 500 and then several decade compilations (60's, 70's etc) which I've cross referenced into each year. I will then use the digitaldreamdoor top 100 for that year to mop up the rest. It's then a case of whittling it down to 20. It's not a definitive list by any means, I don't have the time to listen to album tracks but then I want it to be generally mainstream and recognisable anyway so I can stick it on in parties etc. Time is also a big factor as when I started I left myself with less than 3 months to complete the 50 playlists, and it's proving to be very time consuming.
you may also find some of these year-end lists useful

Thanks
this is a really cool idea for a present
that's all i have to say really.
hahaha
this idea is so gay
and a complete waste of time
Are you really 31 or just dyslexic?
Grow up.

I have "Time Of The Season" in for 1968 and was/am toying with "She's Not There" for 1964. Any others you'd recommend?
Possibly 'Tell Her No'
But Time Of The Season is decent, too. Good work.
1965...
Have you thought about -
The Byrds "Turn! Turn! Turn!" (the song that invented jangle pop!)
The Pretty Things "Rosalyn" (blues garage / proto-punk classic)
The Sonics "Psycho" (ditto)
The Mama's and the Papa's "California Dreaming"
Martha & The Vandella's "Nowhere to Run"
Smokey Robinson "Tracks of My Tears" (is the money track)
John Coltrane "A Love Supreme: Part 1" (what no Jazz?)
Wilson Pickett "In the Midnight Hour"
Something from Bert Jansch.
"Tracks of My Tears" is on the list (13) and "California Dreaming" is on 1966.
"Turn, Turn, Turn" was on the shortlist and "In The Midnight Hour" I'm not too fussed on.
The rest I haven't heard though so I will check them out. Keep the suggestions coming, thanks.

it's his list though, mate
maybe do your own list, in your own thread
Christ almighty! I mean we all know about the sixties and that...
but when you put a list of songs like that together - what a year!
All you'd need to top it off would to be aged 18, for England to win a football tournament and for some of that free love stuff going around.
Yeah, but if DiSers were around back then, 99% of them would be in their rooms listening to Nuggets-y stuff and complaining that everything in that list was shit

I would comment
But SilkySkillz says it's none of my business.
Please do
You've come up with some good suggestions previously and I'm a big boy, I can handle the criticism :-)
haha
sorry, man. comment away.
Can't say I've read all the lists in detail, but I've done a bit of Ctrl+F'ing and these are some that would definitely be in my lists from the years already done and which haven't been mentioned yet.
They include one of the best songs ever recorded in the shape of Nina Simone - Sinnerman (and you could have a bunch of other Nina songs too). But also:
The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk
Sugar Pie DeSanto - Soulful Dress
Bert Jansch - Needle of Death
Jimmy Ruffin - What Becomes of the Broken Hearted
Love - 7 & 7 is
Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
The Young Tradition - The Lyke Wake Dirge
Erma Franklin - Piece of My Heart
Etta James - I'd Rather Go Blind
Nick Drake - Been Smoking Too Long
Tim Buckley - No Man Can Find The War
Turtles - Happy Together
I'd've probably picked Broken Arrow for Buffalo Springfield as well, and Behind A Painted Smile for the Isleys. But hey. You included the best Four Tops song, and have got Fontella Bass and Marvin & Kim, so not too shabby.
'63 was also the year that one of the best live albums of the century was released and another was recorded
One recorded in Harlem and the other with Harlem in its name, as it happens. Y'already know I'm talking about James Brown - Live At The Apollo (actually recorded in '62, but released in '63), and Sam Cooke - Live at the Harlem Square Club (recorded '63, not released until 1985). Not sure how that fits into your project, but you should at least give 'em a listen.
Thanks for the suggestions
I'm a bit pushed for time at the moment, but I will give them a listen soon.
you wanna set up some sort of Spotify playlist of shit that doesn't make B_B_E's cut?
do it, mate
Nah, not really
Gonna have some dinner and maybe watch something on iplayer.
I have playlists ready for roll...
For most years going back to the early fifties.
All works in progress though.
Here's 1967 - I won't post any more in this thread though, as it's not my thread - and they rightly belong somewhere else, at some point in the future!
