they've written some fantastic songs.

for all the 'po-faced/boring' stuff they get, Chris Martin's a really likeable fella who can poke fun at himself

they dont put on any pretences, they know what they are and they're better for it

Parachutes was a really good album

and well liked amongst the indie hipsters like yrselves.

Then Rush of Blood came out...way mo' even better than Parachutes, nary a weak tune and most super-duper fantastic. I mean, c'mon, who doesn't like Clocks ffs?!

Then, suddenly Coldplay weren't our little secret. OMG, the rest of the world recognized what we already knew, and then we (read: you) disowned them. Coldplay are SHITE you said again and again and again.

And now, when it's OK to like Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Frank Ocean and bunch of others who make Coldplay look experimental by comparison...oh! yeah, maybe it's OK to admit Coldplay can write a great indie-esque pop song.

They have always been pretty bland and dreary? I just don't personally think 'great' is a word you could attach to them. They're okay.

  drove to Chicago to see them on their first American tour because they had brought Grandaddy on as support. i suppose i shouldn't have expected much, especially in comparison to Grandaddy's unforgettable set, but they very nearly put me to sleep. we left after 3 or 4 songs, fearing they might spoil our buzz.

The only album they've released that hasn't been decent is X & Y

Which suffered because it was a bit TOO Coldplay by Numbers. Obviously they aren't wildly exerimental...but they change things between albums to keep things interesting.

still the best gig i've ever seen on the main stage* and i've been there 13 times. an indie band who could have easily become the Travis or whatever of their era deciding "right let's have this" and blowing away an entire field. just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.
