Yuuuup.
M.A.A.D City (Feat. MC Eiht) is exactly the kind of Compton music I want in 2013.
Trying to think of anything bad to say about this record other than it is a travesty that Cartoon & Cereal isnt on here.
yeah, it's not even on the itunes super deluxe addition
no biggie, though, i guess.
I'm gonna place it at the end of the album
in my collection anyway. They can't control me.
I meant 2012, but really just meant to say currently.
Like M.A.A.D City a lot
the first beat is basically a Mercy though, so I'm glad it flips half way.
no need for 'a' in there
His rapping is so all over the place on it.
love that, obviously
And MC Eiht, gggggeeeeeeeaaaaaaaah still has a great presence. Glad Kendrick pulled him up for this.
yeah, was surprised to see him pop up tbh
nice touch.
Favourite track so far, this.
it really is
glad he came through. gonna be on repeat for the foreseeable future.
I really like both Dre cuts.
It's a slight track from a production standpoint,
but the lyrics pack punch.
why isn't Cartoons & Cereal on it?
gonna listen to it in a minute
It is now, you see

:)
"(...) You need to hear this record. In fact, everyone you know he claims to have any interest in urban music needs to hear this record. I don’t expect one album to change everything in hip hop, but at a time where everyone is doing their best to sound the same, Kendrick Lamar could very well be the cornerstone for rap’s next great movement."
http://www.underthegunreview.net/2012/10/18/review-kendrick-lamar-good-kid-m-a-a-d-city/
This is definitely gonna get overhyped.
So we're all gonna have to collectively agree to squash the 'kendrick is the savior of hip hop' 'maybe hip hop isnt dead' 'this is the the next big thing' ideas.
I don't think I've ever met anyone who's claimed to have any interest in 'urban' music
It's a horrible term.
People don't even say it irl!
I guess only writers who don't know how to say what they are trying to say use it.
Real
is only kind of ok, Cartoon & Cereal should definitely have been in that slot.
Cant really agree with myself on this anymore
after learning the full narrative of this album. Real is fine. C&C will stay tacked on as a bonus track in my collection.
Never listened to Kendrick for more than 1 minute before
Just copped the album on the back of this thread. Shit KNOCKS!
You should check out Section.80 then.
Some of his best stuff to date is on there. Couple stinkers too but overall pretty great.
Cool, will do.
Might bed in with good kid for a bit first
Maybe hip hop's not dead
This is real hip hop. Not like Nicki Minaj, Flo Rida, Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne, and LMFAO, who suck. Kendrick, Eminem, Biggie, 2Pac, and KRS-One are real hip hop.
srsly tho it's really good
START UP THAT MASERATI AND VRRRRROOOMVRRRROOOM I'M RACIN
SEEM LIKE THE WHOLE CITY GO AGAINST ME
EVERY TIME IM IN THE STREET I HEAR YOCK! YOCK! YOCK!
out today?
BIIIIIIATCH coldplay BIIIIIAAAATCH coldplay BIIIIIIAAAATCH coldplay
MARTIN HAD A DREEAM
MARTIN HAD A DREEEAM
Classic case of a thread which is going to triple in size
when P4K review it.
although, tbf, it doesn't appear to be streaming anywhere yet.
BBC review up today.
Three thumbs up.
I have pretty much been on it non-stop since receiving it.
Good stuff

Nice review, particularly the bit about the OutKast influence.
This album definitely has an ATLiens feel, with the futuristic beats and chanted hooks. Dr. Dre might be his closest affiliate, but it's definitely the South Coast 'Dre that you can hear in Kendrick's flow.
this is ridiculous
went to listen to one song from this because I have loads of work I should be doing
ended up listening to the entire thing (deluxe edition) twice in a row
Not lived up to the hype.
I seem to be the only one who finds that this release really didn't live up to the expectations. After Section.80, The Recipe and Swimming Pools, I wasn't expecting a very laid-back album with a lack of other big beats. I've been waiting for this for months and after nearly a dozen listens, I still don't understand the 4 star+ reviews...
there's loads of big beats
Backstreet Freestyle, both sections of M.A.A.D city, Compton, all massive
generally tho there's quite a lot of diversity which I think is good
+ I don't think it's any more laid back than Section 80?
Your'e not gonna have an overabundance
of club tracks on such a personal record. He wasn't aiming for that, not his style at all.
I do think this album will be the type to open up after sitting with it for a while. The kind where everyone will have a different personal favorite.
come on Spotify!
DAMN I GOT BITCHES, DAMN I GOT BITCHES
Been excited for this for about a year now, got the deluxe edition today. It's not disappointing on first listen. Had to listen to Backseat Freestyle three times in a row.
Must admit I was hoping for a few more appearances from the Black Hippy crew.
Whilst it's refreshing to see a major label rap album which isn't smothered by constant guest spots, it would have been nice to hear Schoolboy Q or Ab-Soul just once. I was expecting maybe one posse cut as a bonus track or something. Jay Rock's verse on Money Tree is outstanding, but leaves me thirsting for more.
it's definitely rekindled my brief obsession with Black Hippy stuff
eventually they'll do that group album, right ?
In one of those interviews:
--What about the involvement of other Black Hippy members on the album?--
--We've done a bunch of records together- we're trying to see which ones stick to the story. I'm not huge on just doing a record because someone's my friend or he's in the group, it's still got to make sense. Jay Rock wasn't on Section 80; the songs we did just didn't feel right. I'm not going to force a record.--
Couple interviews for those interested:

or at least equal with Peer Pressure

Just incredibly misinformed.
Wow, this isn't a joke huh?
the very first word is factually innacurate
Bwahaha, didnt even register when I read that.
--gangster uncle-- was just staring at me the whole time, couldn't look anywhere else.
Jesus
I've been into the guy for three days and I knew more than that
Chicago...
...while ‘Compton’ with Dre is all hometown swagger.
The fact that they got someone with no clue about hip-hop to review maybe the most talked about rap album of the year is impressively small time... I'm assuming from the word limit that this was actually printed in the magazine too :D
They've already edited it, so for anyone who missed it:
6/10
Chicago rapper Kendrick Lamar has, somehow, bagged guest spots from Lady Gaga, Drake and Dr Dre for his major-label debut. But like the cover art – which shows baby Lamar on the knees of his gangster uncle in Compton – ‘Good Kid, MAAd City’ is a record more about homeboys than celebrity friends. ‘Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe’ must be the most understated Gaga collab ever, while ‘Compton’ with Dre is all hometown swagger. ‘The Recipe’, meanwhile, is a stoner tribute to the West Coast (only available on the deluxe edition). It might lack the raw appeal of Kendrick’s 2011 mixtape ‘Section.80’, but it’s also a big-budget reminder that the 25-year-old hasn’t forgotten his roots.
...weird. They corrected all the mistakes, then re-upped ^that one :S
Sticking with your guns is underrated.
the gaga bit??
yeah
there are several listening party reviews that credit the vocals to Gaga tbf. a quick google suggests she's either not on the song, or her vocals are distorted. certainly doesn't sound like her.
SOMEHOW BAGGED A GUEST SPOT FROM DRAKE :'D
jesus i could probably get drake to drop a verse at a baby shower if i had the money
hahaha
INTELIGINT HIP HOPS :P
I dunno, Section.80 did very little for me, we'll see what happens when I get around to this new one. What's it got that the first one didn't have? (srs question)
Different songs ;)
Seriously though, its just more consistent and doesn't have any embarrassing hooks or blaring weak spots.
^ this
If you didn't find much to enjoy in the high points on Section.80, you probably won't like GKMC. It does a good job of building on the same aesthetic, instead of making an unprecedented leap into the unknown or anything.
Death Grips won me over with a refinement rather than a major aesthetic shift
Maybe Kendrick can do the same. I guess the only way to find out is to listen.
Gaining awareness of the context/concept
of the album has opened it up a bit more for me as well. Sometimes that can be a hinderance or just fluff to market a mediocre album, but the songs here warrant a deep dive imo.
Backstreet Freestyle.
I think that song is right up your alley actually.
*Backseat
*Blackstreet
no diggity, no doubt.
Mmmhmmm
listening now - I'd have to say it is.
I'll be picking this up today.
the internet set to explode in 9.5 seconds
Here we go then huuuuuuh.
9.5!
There seems to be some serious ratings inflation recently at Pitchfork, but it's one of the year's standout albums nonetheless.
Off the back of one listen, that's ridiculous, but as you say
they've been overhyping certain stuff a lot more than usual this year. Oh well, if people start listening to this as their one hip hop album rather than Watch The Throne then it can only be a good thing.
Not that there's any point in comparing them
but I'd say it's as accomplished as the Frank Ocean album, although both are high 8s for me.
In fact I'd argue that none of P4K's 9.0+ albums from this year are worth it. They've mainly slightly less impressive efforts than previous albums which have received lower ratings (Grizzly Bear, Beach House, Godspeed... maybe even Tame Impala & Swans).
5/5 from FACT too
http://www.factmag.com/2012/10/23/kendrick-lamar-good-kid-m-a-a-d-city/
Their reviews have been well off the mark recently though, kind of given up on them. NOT THAT THIS ALBUM ISN'T GOOD. Just as overhyped as we all predicted.
that's a superbly written review though
in all fairness
True, but the last paragraph basically admits it's not a 5/5
I'm just kneejerking against the numbers anyway, ignore me.
eh
That's a killer review
Regardless of the score, it's pretty much gets it bang on, and makes it clear that (as I suspect too) it isn't his classic, just a great record.
--bone fide--
lol
maybe it's not 'superbly' written after all :D
Well you obviously care if you're concerned about devaluation.
frank ocean is a firm 9+
but they've definitely been too liberal with the 9s. it seemed to start with that bon iver album, still blows my mind that anybody could listen to that and feel anything other than "yeah this is nice"
Fair enough
The best of that bunch is probably Fiona Apple for me, a prodigious talent hitting her peak. Not had Kendrick long enough to place it.
About half the Frank Ocean album is excellent, a quarter pretty good, and the rest misses. His best is yet to come if you ask me.
Bon Iver >>>>> channel ORANGE
LOL
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-nXSql8nZo
There doesn't seem to be an official stream
But I found this odd website where you seem to be able to listen to it http://www.thissoundgoesaround.com/2012/10/kendrick-lamar-good-kid-m-a-a-d-city-full-album-stream/
Seems really strong on the first few listens, I'll come back with some thoughts when I'm not at work and I can give it some proper concentration.
wooah.
First listen on headphones, there's just so so much to take in - its so rich and varied. 2012 keeps on givin'
David Drakes complex review is awesome:
http://www.complex.com/music/2012/10/kendrick-lamar-good-kid-maad-city-review
Really good read, thanks.
There was also a 6 page feature in Complex which I found really interesting. Probably the most in depth feature on Lamar i've seen, and it acts as a good introduction to what he's all about and his music, from Section.80 to Cartoons and Cereal to the new album. I like the discussion of how he deals with nostalgia, both in that feature and the Drakes review. "Right now, I'm in Compton."
(Remember to read past the 1st page, it doesn't make it obvious that it continues!):
http://www.complex.com/music/2012/10/kendrick-lamar-online-cover-story
That's great
So many threads to unravel in there.
i love that backseat freestyle is on this
because, and i'm not knocking it in any way for this, but it's a indie-boy-who-listens-to-one-rap-album-a-year catnip kind of album, and that song genuinely seems to be stressing people out, debating whether it's a satire or not. i can just imagine them closing their eyes and wishing he'd stop shouting DAMN I GOT BITCHES and get back to the troubled black youth narrative.
which, really, is a perfectly fine way to feel, i just think it's funny that the overall theme is so universally inviting and then he slaps a monster ignorant jam at the front end.
The track obviously is a satire though...
Well, not really a satire, but more him trying to capture his youth when he was reckless, getting high and didn't really give a shit. He's said himself that the song is like the interlude for 'The Art of Peer Pressure', which makes pretty explicit how he feels about that kind of recklessness now, in hindsight. I think the whole song is sort of meant tongue-in-cheek. It's Kendrick before he started being introspective, it's him freestyling after listening to Young Jeezy and smoking a PCP laced joint in the back of that car.
I also think you're overstating the indie-boy-rap-album thing a little. Sure, he's got that 'backpacker' vibe about him- conscientious rap and all that- but this album has universal appeal. It's got Dre's hand behind it, Just Blaze beats, Hit-Boy beats, an MC Eiht feature, and Kendrick is being hyped in all circles, not just the Pitchfork-hip-hop crowd.
Besides, hasn't the 'indie-white-boy-hip-hop' thing gone fully ironic now anyway? Pretty sure they only listen to Wacka Flocka Flame and Chief Keef now.
slightly tongue in a cheek is what it is, yeah
but i'm saying it's the need for it to be intellectually defined as 'satire' that i found funny, because it doesn't really need much analysis, but it's getting it because people feel the need to justify it.
i know what you mean about backpack indie rap being a bit full circle, but if there is still one thing that turns off these people it's hedonistic ignant shit, and the one thing that always attracts them is INTELLIGENT HIP HOP. and on this album kendrick kinda does a lap of those things across 3 tracks, which is why it's causing so many wet beds.
As coolerthantv says...
no hipster types listen to backpacker rap anymore, this ain't 1999.
disagree
i mean nobody listens to lupe fiasco anymore but there's still lots of other conscientious rap (whether you classify it as backpacker or not) that's popular among 'hipster types'
i am partially basing this on what hip hop is popular with the what.cd crowd, who are spectacularly alt/indie/whatever.
I think youd be surprised by how many people DO
actually listen to Lupe though. Dude still sells records but he gets ignored by critics and tastemakers for the most part.
BUT... lets not devolve this thread into a hipster-VS-indie-VS-backpacker-VS-alt-VS-whiteys debate. This album is too good for that and frankly it sidesteps the nonsense and stands on its own to be dissected for what it is, not for who it hypothetically appeals or doesn't appeal too. I just don't see why/how any type of rap fan couldn't/wouldn't enjoy this, or at the least respect its scope and ambition.
You see Kendrick named Rhythmalism (& Quik Is The Name) in his all time 25
More recognition for your boy Quik
http://www.complex.com/music/2012/10/kendrick-lamars-25-favorite-albums
...and B&O too, missed that one.
I love him even more now.
Strong list too
Clearly gone for his actual favourites, rather than just having to pay respects to the 'classics'.
Yeah, cool cos they
all ARE classics tho still. Just not the obv ones. Love that he has some cash money records in there and Dogg Food and of course Quik.
^This
Wouldn't see many rappers saying Stillmatic and Black Album over Illmatic and The Blueprint. I still need to get on some Mannie Fresh beats by the looks of things, never explored early Cash Money.
Complex have really gone for it with their Lamar coverage haven't they? I know it's only been out two days, but this album feels already feels like it's going to be something seminal, a guaranteed classic.
AH man,
sorry still working on that Mannie mix. I didnt forget, I started it but havent had the time to finalize.
Not acceptable man.
You need to sort your priorities really. Surely bringing up kids and all that grown up stuff can wait until after you've made rap mixes for strangers on the internet?
(Looking forward to it!)
and Quik is the Name is the first album on the list
oh you already said so
It's similar to Michael Jordan in that respect
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxiPLWaVNYc
which is Kendrick doing a full on trap song, basically emulating Wayne. It's easy to over think that sort of thing but at the end of the day you can't deny that it's just really enjoyable. Backseat Freestyle is cool but it does kind of annoy me when he goes into full Eminem mode at the end.
DAMN I GOT BITCHES
DAMN I GOT BITCHES
fucking love that song
Apparently Cartoons and Cereal was only left of because they couldn't get a sample clearance.
They wanted it on there... Shame really, as the concept fits in nicely with rest of the album.

UK tour, heads up
http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/search?tm_link=tm_homeA_header_search&aid=1480454&user_input=kendrick+lamar&q=Kendrick+Lamar
Think London standing tickets may already be sold out, got some earlier thankfully. Third time seeing him in a year!
£30?!
Is it just me, or does that seem kinda expensive? How much were the previous shows?
yer. too pricey. and its at indigo2.
It was around £20-25 for the Electric Ballroom iirc
Maybe more. The first time was at Coachella.
Been absolutely rinsing this
Keeps getting better the more I listen to it.
Regarding CrispinAlexander's rap for white-indie boy comment, it's interesting that this thread hasn't really received much attention outside of the usual hip hop friendly crowd. Most the super-P4Ky friends who've checked it out haven't been that enamoured either. Seems very much a hip hop fan's album.
most *my* super-P4Ky friends
on this forum, yeah
it doesn't make any difference, it's just the first wave of comments from people around the internet who only listened because it was a 9.5 (WHOEVER THEY MAY BE) were pretty funny.
wasn't meant to be a dig at you in anyway btw
i think i misunderstood your comment in the first place, so accept my apologies if i sounded dismissive. i agree with the above completely.
just found that with mates who have more rock focused tastes, that this hasn't gone down as well as some other high P4K scoring rap efforts.
no worries
there aren't really any "hits" on it apart from maybe backseat. it's catchy and all in parts, but you know what i mean.
probably has something to do with it
IT GOES HALLE BERRY, OR HALLELUJAH
Keeps getting better.
Did somebody say Dominos?
the art of peer pressure is so good
THE BASS
YAWK YAWK YAWK YAWK
This is such a great record. I think the reason, as said above, that it hasn't garnered as much 'chatter' as we expected is because it's so dense and in a way quite subtle - it's the complete opposite of something like either one of the last two Kanye-related records that have blown up off the back of massive singles.
When I first listened to it it seemed like such a lot to take in but I've just found myself listening to it constantly, was amazed how many lyrics I'd taken in over a really short time, it's just really immersive and rewarding. It was a bit claustrophobic listening to it on headphones on my commute but it really came into its own after a couple of out-loud listens.
Anyway, love it.
In an age of Odd Future
I found this album really refreshing. Kinda felt that modern hip hop was killing the funkiness of hip hop with this grimey aggroness but this record blends the old 90s style and modern hip hop reallllllyyyyy well. I like it.
gave this a first proper listen yesterday
really enjoyed it, alot more than I was expecting, can totally hear the outkast influence mentioned above
No idea why it's taken me so long but listening to this for the first time now
Sounds like a grower already.
Could do without the skits mind you
I didn't mind them too much on first listen
didn't think it detracted as much as it can sometimes
I think they work quite well
Err'y'body sit yo bitch ass down and listen to this true motherfuckin' story told by Kendrick Lamar on Rooosecrans... ya bitch.
Classic case of quotes deleting my sentence
What I said was that they generally serve the context and to tie the concept together. And, obviously the best one is that ^ the sung intro to Art of Peer Pressure.
Yea, a few listens in and I'm with you
I like this a lot.
New track
http://soundcloud.com/topdawgent/kendrick-lamar-the-jig-is-up
Going in on Shyne.
Called the new KL album trash on twitter so hes striking back. I like it.
If he's literally just bashed that out in the space of a week that's awesome
Just occurred to me
The Art of Peer Pressure and Ab Soul's 'Double Standards' are sort-of companion pieces, what with the "he with the homies" repetition. Sorry if this is really obvious or has been mentioned a bunch of times already, but I haven't read it anywhere yet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-xLesuKY1Q
so so so shit
just all sorts of appalling isn't it?
More pitchfork garbage, inane, trite lyrics and a predictable plethora of whore-producers.
utter shite, just fuck off.
5 posts.
WELCOME!
Quick q
What is 'pitchfork garbage'?
What do you dislike about it so much?
Do you listen to much hip-hop?
I like it a lot
But it's not blowing me away entirely just yet. There are a lot of tracks which still feel skippable. Notably the one with Drake. The two title tracks are amazing though, really incredible.
The Drake one is really good though!
It samples one of the greatest sex jams of all time too, and does it well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLESvMsaYKY
The tracks that dont grab me much on a sonic level still work as part of the story though, which give me reason enough to come back.
Id say that A Prince Among Thieves is the closest comparison to how this thing will be rated down the road. I dont really listen to that record much anymore outside of a few songs but I still think its one of the best ever.
Yeah I'm actually enjoying the Drake one, despite all the stick it's getting.
Don't care that much for his verse but it's not bad.
Only tracks I could do without are Real and Compton, to be honest. Think it should have ended on Sing About Me... I'm Dying of Thirst.
Compton is really bad. Real is pretty boring
but an integral part of the album, just wish the production had something more engaging.
I quite like Compton
I mean it's not essential but I like the production and it's quite catchy
the only tracks I don't care much for are Poetic Justice and Real - don't dislike them, but they are kinda boring and I tend to zone out during them
So this thread is ruined too?
Fuck DiS. All the best music threads are dying. Really wish all that troll shit would stick to the social board.
KenFIX lamar
Listened for first time yesterday
Neeeed to go see him in January now.
For anyone interested: The Gaga version of 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNJeGYwpb3U
Definitely doesn't fit that well. Glad she got the chop.
christ.
oh god
all up front in our faces with her voice and that.
so glad they canned that version.
Yea, I'm obsessed with this
Such a rich album texturally, the production is so good. Tracks that I initially thought were a bit weak have revealed themselves to be brilliant with every further listen and the initial standouts are still great.
I was totally wrong about the skits as well, tie the whole thing together brilliantly.
Late AOTY contender.
Confession:
I left work slightly earlier than normal today cos I wanted to get home and have the place to myself to crank up this album. Its just amazing from start to finish isn't it? Serious AOTY contender
Ya bish?
anyone seen him live?
He's playing the Academy soon, which I told myself that I wouldn't go back to ever, but I might break that.
Seen him twice, both times have been a lot of fun
Once was at Coachella so had the added bonus of Ab-Soul and Jay Rock (doing backflips) and the other time was at the Electric Ballroom which had the added bonus of being in a crowd in a small room shouting along to 'Michael Jordan'.
Bit pissed off this London show has been upgraded to the frankly way too big Hammersmith Apollo but at the same time it's with a live band for the first time which should be interesting.
In short, go.
I'm after a ticket for the Hammersmith Apollo show
so if anyone has a spare/knows of a spare going for face value or thereabouts I'm all ears. Cheers
