Nice review, particularly the bit about the OutKast influence.
This album definitely has an ATLiens feel, with the futuristic beats and chanted hooks. Dr. Dre might be his closest affiliate, but it's definitely the South Coast 'Dre that you can hear in Kendrick's flow.

I seem to be the only one who finds that this release really didn't live up to the expectations. After Section.80, The Recipe and Swimming Pools, I wasn't expecting a very laid-back album with a lack of other big beats. I've been waiting for this for months and after nearly a dozen listens, I still don't understand the 4 star+ reviews...

Been excited for this for about a year now, got the deluxe edition today. It's not disappointing on first listen. Had to listen to Backseat Freestyle three times in a row.
Must admit I was hoping for a few more appearances from the Black Hippy crew.
Whilst it's refreshing to see a major label rap album which isn't smothered by constant guest spots, it would have been nice to hear Schoolboy Q or Ab-Soul just once. I was expecting maybe one posse cut as a bonus track or something. Jay Rock's verse on Money Tree is outstanding, but leaves me thirsting for more.

If you didn't find much to enjoy in the high points on Section.80, you probably won't like GKMC. It does a good job of building on the same aesthetic, instead of making an unprecedented leap into the unknown or anything.
Death Grips won me over with a refinement rather than a major aesthetic shift
Maybe Kendrick can do the same. I guess the only way to find out is to listen.
Gaining awareness of the context/concept
of the album has opened it up a bit more for me as well. Sometimes that can be a hinderance or just fluff to market a mediocre album, but the songs here warrant a deep dive imo.

There seems to be some serious ratings inflation recently at Pitchfork, but it's one of the year's standout albums nonetheless.
Off the back of one listen, that's ridiculous, but as you say
they've been overhyping certain stuff a lot more than usual this year. Oh well, if people start listening to this as their one hip hop album rather than Watch The Throne then it can only be a good thing.
Not that there's any point in comparing them
but I'd say it's as accomplished as the Frank Ocean album, although both are high 8s for me.
In fact I'd argue that none of P4K's 9.0+ albums from this year are worth it. They've mainly slightly less impressive efforts than previous albums which have received lower ratings (Grizzly Bear, Beach House, Godspeed... maybe even Tame Impala & Swans).

The best of that bunch is probably Fiona Apple for me, a prodigious talent hitting her peak. Not had Kendrick long enough to place it.
About half the Frank Ocean album is excellent, a quarter pretty good, and the rest misses. His best is yet to come if you ask me.

Probably the most in depth feature on Lamar i've seen, and it acts as a good introduction to what he's all about and his music, from Section.80 to Cartoons and Cereal to the new album. because, and i'm not knocking it in any way for this, but it's a indie-boy-who-listens-to-one-rap-album-a-year catnip kind of album, and that song genuinely seems to be stressing people out, debating whether it's a satire or not. i can just imagine them closing their eyes and wishing he'd stop shouting DAMN I GOT BITCHES and get back to the troubled black youth narrative.
which, really, is a perfectly fine way to feel, i just think it's funny that the overall theme is so universally inviting and then he slaps a monster ignorant jam at the front end.

Well, not really a satire, but more him trying to capture his youth when he was reckless, getting high and didn't really give a shit. He's said himself that the song is like the interlude for 'The Art of Peer Pressure', which makes pretty explicit how he feels about that kind of recklessness now, in hindsight. I think the whole song is sort of meant tongue-in-cheek. It's Kendrick before he started being introspective, it's him freestyling after listening to Young Jeezy and smoking a PCP laced joint in the back of that car.
I also think you're overstating the indie-boy-rap-album thing a little. Sure, he's got that 'backpacker' vibe about him- conscientious rap and all that- but this album has universal appeal. It's got Dre's hand behind it, Just Blaze beats, Hit-Boy beats, an MC Eiht feature, and Kendrick is being hyped in all circles, not just the Pitchfork-hip-hop crowd.
Besides, hasn't the 'indie-white-boy-hip-hop' thing gone fully ironic now anyway? Pretty sure they only listen to Wacka Flocka Flame and Chief Keef now.

This album is too good for that and frankly it sidesteps the nonsense and stands on its own to be dissected for what it is, not for who it hypothetically appeals or doesn't appeal too. I just don't see why/how any type of rap fan couldn't/wouldn't enjoy this, or at the least respect its scope and ambition.

which is Kendrick doing a full on trap song, basically emulating Wayne. It's easy to over think that sort of thing but at the end of the day you can't deny that it's just really enjoyable. Backseat Freestyle is cool but it does kind of annoy me when he goes into full Eminem mode at the end.

This is such a great record. I think the reason, as said above, that it hasn't garnered as much 'chatter' as we expected is because it's so dense and in a way quite subtle - it's the complete opposite of something like either one of the last two Kanye-related records that have blown up off the back of massive singles.
When I first listened to it it seemed like such a lot to take in but I've just found myself listening to it constantly, was amazed how many lyrics I'd taken in over a really short time, it's just really immersive and rewarding. It was a bit claustrophobic listening to it on headphones on my commute but it really came into its own after a couple of out-loud listens.
Anyway, love it.

I found this album really refreshing. Kinda felt that modern hip hop was killing the funkiness of hip hop with this grimey aggroness but this record blends the old 90s style and modern hip hop reallllllyyyyy well. I like it.

But it's not blowing me away entirely just yet. There are a lot of tracks which still feel skippable. Notably the one with Drake. The two title tracks are amazing though, really incredible.

The tracks that dont grab me much on a sonic level still work as part of the story though, which give me reason enough to come back.
Id say that A Prince Among Thieves is the closest comparison to how this thing will be rated down the road. I dont really listen to that record much anymore outside of a few songs but I still think its one of the best ever.

Such a rich album texturally, the production is so good. Tracks that I initially thought were a bit weak have revealed themselves to be brilliant with every further listen and the initial standouts are still great.
