idk, think so. sorry.
But you are.
...he's rubbish. just like sex is. or air.
sub-thread: favourite Tom Waits song
mine's Who Are You from Bone Machine
Wrong side of the road, mate.
I can understand why people do, but I can't get over his stupid affected muppet voice and the 'i'm going to pretend to be an outsider artist now' career flip flop. Fake ass Tom Waits. An entire record of that is exhausting.
But I haven't listened to it for years. Heard enough of the newer stuff to put me off!
assuming you don't like his early stuff.
if you can find time out from smiting dragons and summoning demons that is.
But songs like 'time' and 'waltzing matilda' make me wince
but I always really enjoy it. So no.
However when he's good, he's perfect. Can you seriously tell me that Jockey Full of Bourbon is shit?
hated his album of crooning piano ballads, but otherwise he's great in small doses.
what he's been waiting for.
I got Rain Dogs on spec thinking "legendary album by the legendary Tom Waits, this is gonna slay me!!", but to my ears it's a 6.
I haven't got the energy to slog through his back catalogue, the new stuff in particular doesn't appeal, but this is one of the very, very few cases where I think: so many people who I respect think he's a genius that I won't talk shit about him. Just not really for me.
and i think my brain was going, "i like weird music, this is weird ergo i like this" but then i went away and came back and saw myself listening to eyeball kid and it was not good... didn't know his old stuff was different and maybe that's real great i don't know.
some of you are very mean, consider my self confidence well and truly dented.
in my first post.
knocked me so hard i forgot how to read english for a while... any oblique references would have flown past.
but Tom Waits is a gurning belm.
Actually, also, most Tom Waits songs are brilliant fun to play. Just not necessarily to listen to.
He's also made a lot of fairly shit albums. I JUST DON'T KNOW
Why does everyone have to cry troll as soon as someone posts a view they don't agree with? If you read his other posts in the thread, it's pretty clear he's not trolling. He just doesn't like something you like. Deal with it.
non-troll - say you don't like something and explain why.
troll - take a sacred cow, say it's shit, and then leave the thread.
i posted this when i was drunk at 3 in the morning, went to bed, went to work, came home, looked at thread again, posted in it. tbf.
i should've read the rest of the thread. just thought guyhousername was a bit harsh on doggoneuk for saying it was a troll. without close scrutiny it looks like one.
he knows what reaction he is going to get and everyone else is being silly by getting offended. You Sir are entitled to love or hate Tom Waits.
only liked Small Change and the early croonerish stuff for ages though. And the odd song from the weirder records. Then later a few more kinda stood out. Then a few years later it occurred to me that I'd grown to like a whole bunch of his stuff. And eventually I realised I'd picked up most of his back catalogue and the sneaky bastard had crept to the tom of my last.fm lists whilst I wasn't looking.
Not sure what the moral of this story is. Except that I disagree I guess.
He always has so many top-notch musicians work on his records.
the rerecording of 'Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet', the last thing that needed was him going YEJUDD BLURRRRD HAROOOOOOO ETC over the top of the original sample.
he really didn't click with me the first time around. I picked up Rain Dogs and just couldn't see what all the fuss was about. Now it's probably one of my top 3 favourite records ever.
In short, keep plugging away. He's fucking amazing.....
For those still unconvinced I'd point you in the direction of these five lovelies:-
