the seer OR allejuah! don't bend! ascend!?

matthewdrury [Edit] [Delete] 22 replies 15:05, 15 October '12

just saw the new godspeed record was given a 9.3 by pitchfork. but whilst i think it's a very good record. i just 'the seer' is far, far superior. i just think the seer sounds like a band going places, and the albums quite unlike anything else i've heard, but the godspeed record just falls short of that for me. it sounds like a safe album that fans of godspeed will enjoy but it doesn't offer anything new.

  • can't listen to Swans, it's a difficult listen.

    godspeed fits my commute perfectly.

  • 9.3!

so lift yr fists was a 13, right?

    The Seer, deffo.

  • At the moment I'd say The Seer

as I've only had a few listens to the Godspeed one. Also as you say The Seer is much more of an epic album in scale and as good as ascend is don't think it will match The Seer after more listens, it's still bloody good though.

  • The Seer

is such a difficult listen compared to the new Godspeed

  • the seer for me....

but the new GYBE! is awesome too....just glad to see ambitious music breaking through into the semi-mainstream again. It's gotta be good for bands that have been plugging away at this sort of stuff in obscurity for years...

    • I think "semi-mainstream"

is being more than a little generous.

      • you're right of course...but at least they are part of the current discourse...

      • GYBE was streamed on The Guardian site, right?

It's not The Sun's website but it's something.

  • I judge my ludicrous experimentalism on one criteria

Which is 'Ok, they've done this, now it's more ridiculous, and wait... it's gone to another level of ridiculous... and now another layer of insanity on top of that'. The opening 12 minutes of the new Godspeed entirely fulfils my criteria. I'm glad this exists.

  • they're both great

I'm so over ranking records. why bother \_(?)_/

    incandenza_ | 16 Oct '12, 01:33 | X
    • I order my CD shelves

according to ranking. Astral Weeks, Harvest, Sticky Fingers, Hatful of Hollow on the top shelf, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, Carnival of Light, Metal Machine Music on the bottom shelf. So these things are VERY important as otherwise I'd never find anything.

      • I'm sure that this isn't true

but amazing work if it is!

  • I prefer The Seer.

It's impossible not to like the Godspeed record but there's nothing on it to touch 3m 57s into 'The Seer Returns' onwards, frankly.

    TheoGB | 16 Oct '12, 15:28 | X
  • What's with the bagpipes on all these records?

    It's not funny or clever.

Anyhoo, The Seer is maybe more impressive, but I think I'll be listening to Godspeed more often.

    littlebirds | 16 Oct '12, 18:06 | X
    • I read, maybe even in the dis review maybe somewhere else, that the instrument on the godspeed album is a hurdy gurdy

      ThingsThatFly @littlebirds | 16 Oct '12, 20:20 | X
      • Well that is significantly more funny

        I retract my comment.

        littlebirds @ThingsThatFly | 17 Oct '12, 15:19 | X
  • 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! is much more immediate.

But, overall, I think The Seer eclipses it.

    Puds | 16 Oct '12, 20:23 | X
    • Listened to seer

at the weekend, i like a challenging listen but most it bored me, and the title song that was 32 mins, taking the piss really.

      grover_elliot @Puds | 17 Oct '12, 15:25 | X
  • okay, for the record

The Seer is impressive, but I find myself on the wrong side of the appreciation/love line for much of the record. it doesn't always reach my heart or play to my imagination like the best Swans/Angels of Light stuff.

Allelujah!... is firmly on the love side of said line.

    incandenza_ | 17 Oct '12, 15:25 | X
  • Only heard the new Godspeed album a couple of times

But I am absolutely loving it. It, to me, is the most immediate of their albums and sounds quite different to their older stuff.

I have never given swans a go, past a couple of tracks. is the seer a good place to start?
