Popular Songs is comically low. Swap that with Painful and you're getting somewhere...
. And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out is number 3
list is fine by me as a result
Painful is the best one surely.
but Popular Songs is really good. Worth the money for And The Glitter Is Gone alone.
The album is near perfect. I agree with it being their best.
are indisputably great.
But let's face it: as a career, they're hit 'n miss. Lots of songs seem, erm, outta key and awkward. But after 25 years, YLT have three dozen truly great songs. Which ain't nothin' to sneeze at.
they're aces in my book. Be on the lookout for their annual stint on the WFMU fund raiser. They'll play ANYTHING.
Never really had much for love for Painful, beyond I Heard You Looking
so should President Yo La Tengo
Painful and ....And then Nothing should be lower I think
'Little Eyes', 'Don't Have To Be So Sad', 'Today is the Day', 'Moonrock Mambo' (in particular the reference to Steve Coogan and Rebecca Front), etc... but I can see why it's understatedness can lead to a somewhat more muted reception.
but yeah, good tune. probably 2 albums in a row of downbeat, understated stuff was too much. if I Can Hear... didn't precede it, i think Summer Sun would have been a lot more appreciated
if ..Nothing Turned Itself.. hadn't preceded it
Only I Can Hear the Heart is better. I saw them at the Underworld in Camden when they were on tour with Seam in 92. They played a lot of stuff from May I Sing and were amazing!
Not surprised to see it rating low though.
been baffled by the way Summer Sun was received. It is probably the one I've played the most.
I like Popular Songs but I've not returned to it as often as some of the others. The Sounds of the sounds of Science should probably be in here - that's great too.
I'd put 'I am not afraid of you...' top though.
'All Your Secrets' is in my top five most played songs ever on Last.fm, and I've had that account for six years. Probably my favourite YLT song. Well, if 'We're An American Band' didn't exist maybe.
the first track on that = perfection
is one of my favourite albums by any band but does anybody else almost ALWAYS skip Spec Bebop? Just can't be fucked.
but it's so wrong. 'Spec Bebop' is a quality wig-out. Oneida-grade wig-out.
But even though I don't really enjoy Spec Bebop, I still listen to it all the way through as a sort of weird, masochistic endurance test, because then when We're an American Band kicks in... it's all the sweeter.
but they shouldn't have stacked all the long tracks together at the end.
And you just had two of the others at the end... yeah.
is a terrific opener
is all Yo La Tengo albums.
They can't be ranked. Their brilliance lies in their crazy range.
