Overrated: With A Little Help From My Friends
Underrated: If I Fell
Probably the biggest influence on music in the last 50 years.
Overrated (for me)
Most of their back catalogue (but then I'm not a fan and I just don't get the mass admiration for them. Although I do have a respect for them as they've probably influenced most of the stuff on my iPod in some way!)
But your average person could name, say, 20 or so Beatles songs, and there are far better ones they probably wouldn't be able to think of. That's where I'm coming from with overrated/underrated.
....but I've always had a soft spot for She's Leaving Home.
Overrated - Hey Jude
Underrated - The Night Before
is such a fucking tune
Underrated - This Boy (Lennon's vocal, wow!)
overrrated - Eight Days a Week because it was a hit single, but it's awful Beatle-pop by the numbers. in the seventies Lennon was running out of things to throw at McCartney and accused Macca of writing it, even though Lennon by all accounts was the culprit.
underrated - Long, Long, Long. One of the most gorgeous songs and recordings they ever did. One of Harrison's best ever. the way it goes from the gentle start to that spooky climax is amazing.
One of my favourites as well
(if he wrote Helter Skelter)
Underrated - Piggies? a lot of people hate Piggies, right?
even tho I know Charles Manson liked it
I can't stand it. That's right, I hate it!
Underrated: She Said She Said
the best of The Beatles
underrated - for no one/and your bird can sing/ not a second time
Underrated - Hey Bulldog (prob my favourite eva, just good rocknroll, innit)
Birthday is also such a tune
Overrated: Yesterday, Hey Jude, Let It fucking Be etc.
Overrated: Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Most overrated song in the history of mankind.
The correct answer is Baby It's You.
That's the perfect song, really.
Obviously, they didn't write it, so if we're only counting original Beatles tracks, i'd probably say Julia.
no idea how it's rated by the masses but it's definitely one of the worst songs i've ever heard in my life, so anything approaching praise would make it overrated
drive my car's decent enough, but it's that beep beep yeah! bit which makes it seem worse than it is
on the piano in the chorus makes me wince moreso than beep-beep
Yesterday, While My Guitar, Come Together (and everything else on the first side of Abbey Road)
Hey Bulldog, Here There and Everywhere, George's Indian stuff, Everything on their first album
Wait, Yes It Is, Girl, Cry Baby Cry, and definitely Hey Bulldog and Long, Long, Long which have already been mentioned. If it counts, Junk, too - a McCartney song that's on the Anthology and his first solo record. Lovely it is.
Overated: Long and Winding Road, When I'm 64, Eleanor Rigby
overrated: lots of it
overrated: the other ones
not sure anything on Revolver can be called it, yet can see that people do forget about some tracks. I think for under-rated: I'm a Loser, She Said She Said, You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, and half of those silly tracks on the white album that people forget or dismiss and are actually brill.
Yellow Submarine and Octopuses Garden most obvious for me, former redeemed a bit by pioneering effects, but there's literally nothing to like about the latter. I'm also not much of a fan of Lucy in the Sky
Overrated - Help, A Hard Days Night, From Me to You, Lady Madonna, Hey Jude, Paperback Writer
Underrated - I've Just Seen a Face, I'll Be Back, Baby's in Black, You Know My Name (Look Up The Number), Old Brown Shoe, Rain
underrated: the early singles (i wanna hold your hand, i saw her standing there, twist and shout, etc)
those songs are so perfect we all take them for granted, myself included.
overrated: come together
oddly, i think ...64, ...Jude ...Winding Road & ...Rigby get bad raps just cuz they're so popular and everyone's heard them too many times. fact is, they are great fucking songs, but proof that even genius can tire from over exposure. see also: all those incredible early singles.
Overrated: When I'm 64
Although Revolver seems be rated higher than Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in most polls (and I agree), people seem to have opinions on most of the tunes from Pepper but some of the tunes from Revolver are rarely mentioned.
...to hate '...64', so i don't see how that track can ever be called overrated. if anything, its the opposite.
I took the thread title to mean "...by the general public", which includes my parents' generation, who grew up with the Beatles. I usually hear Sergeant Pepper's, and its tunes, spoken about in glowing terms. I've seen 2 or 3 TV programmes commemorating anniversaries of the album, usually with George Martin describing the genius of John or the recording process in loving detail. Don't get me wrong, I think Sergeant Pepper's is a very good album, but Revolver doesn't seem to get quite the same treatment. Cultural significance, I guess...
...but i agree that it is most certainly a generational thing.
and 'All Too Much', 'Baby, Your A Rich Man' and 'Northern Song'..maybe 'Blackbird'. Overated: She Loves You
underated - the beautiful ones like- things we said today, and i love her, this boy, all my loving, for no-one, fool on the hill - the early singles,
glad you noticed
but not actually appear in the film.
Underrated: Golden Slumbers\Carry That Weight.
I'm not a huge fan of Come Together, but it's the start of their best album for me (Abbey Road). I'm not a massive fan of theirs but it's a great album.
Under: You Can't Do That
Under: Two of Us, Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except Me and My Monkey)
