rivaled only by Cardiacs. I fucking love Kayo Dot, and pretty much everything else Toby Driver's involved in, I think he's an absolute genius and I'm not one to use the g-word lightly. Choirs of the Eye is without a doubt my favourite album. Every other album's taken far longer to sink in but I cherish them all. I just wish Gamma Knife sounded a bit better...
Heh, just don't expect a lot of other replies to this.
The last seven or so minutes of it are just perfect. A lot of the time they frustrate me, as I think Driver is capable of an actual work of genius, but often ends up putting out 8/10s (in my humble opinion, of course). never got into Gemini.
Blue Lambency Downward is the one that most people are a bit ambivalent towards I thought.
repeated listens helps. 'Choirs...' signified a massive shift in my musical taste so I think I feel compelled to listen to everything they do until I'm familiar with it enough to have a fondness for it, even though I've found every album after Choirs to be initially disappointing. I did not expect them to return to being a 'metal' band though.
In fact my favourite KD-related release in the last few years has been that Maudlin of the Well album which is just lovely.
Choirs of the Eye is kind of an Avant-Metal classic, and Gamma Knife was a pretty solid return to form after Coyote which I thought was a bit more difficult to get into.
love everything, side projects, toby solo, writings, and all. not so keen on maudlin of the well coz it's been dated and cornball but pretty much everything else is some of my favourite stuff of all time.
that was great
cant have heaven and weak/secret song/catharsis getting called cornballs now. bloody love those dodgy guitar and synth tones.
which i think remains my favourite of theirs, so whilst i love Choirs i felt like it was a little bit of step back, so going from there to motW was like... dang. i think it's the terrible cookie monster vocals that put me off most. i like all the ambient guitar stuff.
this remains one of the most hilariously terrible videos i've come across: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bLyNfr_s48
fuck. i still find it weird that someone i respect as much as driver is/was that into something as patently ridiculous as astral projection. if it helped the music, which i'm pretty sure it did, then cool... but it's a proper silly way to spend an evening.
choirs was always the one for me, cant see the manifold curiosity being a step back from anything. each to their own innit.
live in london and play bass/keys?
doesn't really sound allll that similar to kayo dot but they just go together in my head and it's a great, strange record. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0SE7_Ob740
