I'm torn between ATLiens and Aquemini but I'll go for Aquemini on the basis of Rosa Parks alone.
It goes ATLiens = Aquemini > Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik > Stankonia >>> Who cares about the other two.
and you got the correct album on the left side of the = sign as well.
ATLiens a very very close second though.
meant that 'Spottieottiedopalicious' and 'Da Art of Storytellin Part 1' push it over ATLiens for me. Probably my two favourite OutKast tracks.
but the highs on Aquemini are on another level.
Something about those tracks gets under your skin.
I mean, look at tracks 7-14, none of those have anything remotely close to 'single' potential but they are all excellent in their own right.
is so affecting to me.
for where to start, I would say Aquemini for sure, it's way more immediate than ATL.
Speakerboxxx is still great fun. Kinda wish I had started with something better so I'd bothered to buy them sooner.
The Love Below is embarrassing, really...
Nothing wrong with that as long as they eventually get back to the goods.
So they still have that my-first-music nostalgia, and got me into the better stuff
the combination of two dope boyz, ATLiens and wheelz of steel as an opener made ATLiens more immediate for me. But yeah the second half o that album is a bit more downplayed
Two Dope Boyz through Wheelz is pretty special though yah.
Mine would be Dre's on Da Art of Storytellin Part 1.
The way it starts all lighthearted with SASSHHHAAA THUMPEEERR, then just ends bleakly with the same name. It also contrasts perfectly with Big Boi's cheerful verse before about getting his duck sicked. The tragedy of the story takes you completely off-guard, and seems to simultaneously turn the beat into something more sinister. I also love the bit in the middle:
"We on our back looking at the stars, talking bout what we wanna be when we grow up,
I said "what do you wanna be?" She said "alive."
It made me think for a minute, then looked in her eyes- I could have died."
Maybe Dre on Return of the G. For Big Boi probably ATLiens.
Colder than a polar bears toe nails.
I can't really explain why I love it so much though
She got off the bus, the conversation lingered in my head for hours
Took a shower kinda sour cause my favorite group ain't comin with it
But I'm witcha you cause you probably goin through it anyway
first time i heard that song i listened to it about 30 times in a row because of that verse. Big Boi's best verse is probably the second one on Unhappy, though every line on Humble Mumble is pretty much perfect
"Well it's the M I crooked letter,
Ain't no one better,
And when I'm on the microphone you best to wear your sweater,
Cause I'm cooler than a polar bear's toenails, Oh hell..."
I haven't listened to it in full, admittedly, for around three years; I'm far more likely to put on Aquemini now than anything, or Stankonia or Left Foot (I consider it on par with the aforementioned two, if not better) but still....it was the first hip-hop album I ever really got stuck into. well, that and College Dropout. proper running down the CD replayability in long car journeys to/from France and stuff
I can see that it's not the strongest or most cohesive of theirs but it will remain a cherished favourite for fucking years. as evolrebel said, it's an insanely good pop collection. I dunno man, it just holds a special place for me.
I'm with you.
By a fairly small margin, but it's always been my favourite.
Atliens is probably more consistent, but Aquemini is sprawling and ambitious and whatever and that's what I like about it
