New 33 1/3 titles to be published
http://www.33third.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/18-new-titles.html
Have been following this because I submitted myself (and, alas, failed). But keen to hear what people think about the next additions to the series and the angles they might take.
I would have thought Are We Not Men? would get one of these before Freedom Of Choice
Unless there already is one out there.
I can only imagine how tedious a book-length diatribe about The Grey Album can be.
a book about I Get Wet? reading is for nerdz
Biophilia?
It's... not what I'd call a classic. Sadly, I think those days are long past for Bjork. I'll continue to stick with her, mind you.
They Might Be Giants: Flood, by Alex Reed and Philip Sandifer and Andrew WK: I Get Wet, by Phillip Crandall could be fun reads and I guess I might have a gander at Sigur Ros: ( ), by Ethan Hayden.
I don't think the point is necessarily for it to be a classic though
hence Dangerous, for instance....
Dead Kennedys FFFRV could be worth a read
what are the best ones out there already published?
i heard it is a bit hit and miss
The Spiderland one is excellent.
I'd avoid the loveless one, it really wound me up for some reason.
I really like the 69 Love Songs one
mainly because it's not a book-length essay regarding the qualities of the album, or someone's memoirs disguised as such. It's more a compendium of useful facts and figures, vox pops, brief interviews, a crossword, all kinds of things. I lost my copy.
The OK Computer one is a scream.
I think I've only read the OKC one
Man that was bad.
My favourite is
John Darnielle's Masters of Reality
*Master
...also really like the Neutral Milk Hotel one and the Zaireeka one
The
Celine Dion one is brilliant, seriously. It's all about notions of "good" and "bad" taste, the best writing I've encountered on the subject and will probably change the way you look at certain acts.
not sure why a Talk Talk one hasn't been done yet
get one done, someone.
Scott Walker too.
I Get Wet
:')
Bit soon to be calling that Kanye West record a classic
isn't it?
they don't have to be classic albums..
Any other good ones that people recommend?
And where's a good place to buy them from? Second hand would be fine, like. I've not read any but I like the idea of them.
Amazon...
my local bookshop were happy to order them in, though. I reckon now Bloomsbury are running the show that we'll see more stocked in places like Waterstones (which up to now only ever seems to have the Brian Eno and The Band ones).
oh wow, definitely gonna give in a submission if they do that again
which was yours, out of interest ?
I did a proposal for Spiritflesh by Nocturnal Emissions...
you can read the proposal (and hear the album) here: http://rivetingstuff.co.uk/spiritflesh-by-nocturnal-emissions-my-proposa
Well that was a very interesting read,
And the album sounds fantastic. Cheers for bringing it to my attention.
Cheers man!
it was fun to write, and I was really happy to get to the shortlist. NE are amazing and deserve way more respeck.
totally agree..
...NE were excellent and deserve at lot more recognition
and still putting stuff out :)
his latest live tape is great: http://www.earthlydelights.co.uk/discog/spinalcassette.htm?permalink
I mean to submit some of these, one day.
At the Drive-In's 'Relationship...', I'm sure, is a popular choice. But I could do it justice. Isis' 'Oceanic', Ten Grand's 'This Is The Way To Rule'... Late of the Pier's album.
One day.
When I have time.
(never, then.)
do Oceanic plz
ATD-I/Relationship should be a shoe-in
especially written by your own fair (fnarr) hand. The others... can't really see them going for.
They rejected my proposal
for Suede's Dog Man Star :(
I think aside from the fact that there probably isn't a big market for Suede books, it was due to the fact that my book would have been split into two parts: half nonfiction, half fiction. The nonfiction was going to be a history of the band and Dog Man Star's recording in addition to light critical analysis of the music itself. The fiction was going to be heavily based on my own experience as an American Suede fan.
interesting...
anywhere we can read your proposal? What did you make of the 'to-be-published' list?
I haven't put it online yet
but I should publish it on my blog.
Frankly, I was disappointed with the list. I can tell they're trying to go in a different direction with the titles but it doesn't really work for this series. Also, I'm bitter that Definitely Maybe will be published when CLEARLY Dog Man Star was the superior Britpop album. ;)
My friend's proposal for Morrissey's Vauxhall & I was rejected, too. Oh well. David Barker did send me some feedback on my proposal which was great. I think it was the fiction portion of the proposal that really doomed me. I mean, they probably wouldn't have published something about Suede anyway but I know they were looking for more academic texts this go around.
I'd like to read it, so let us know when you blog it...
I do think the list looks to have been influenced by Bloomsbury, though I guess we'll need to wait and see how academic they turn out to be.
I'm still waiting on any feedback, but after reading the Aphex Twin proposal I'm kind of quessing they weren't gonna take on two books about ambient electronic music recorded within six years of each other.
