Tips for 2013
We are looking for new acts for our new music company (we're sort of a label and management company... or whatever we can be). We know that a lot of you have impeccable taste as we just flicked through the tips for 2012 thread and found great things like FOE, I Break Horses, Purity Ring, Stay+ and Jessie Ware (the latter has obviously done pretty well of late): http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4295832
Who should we be checking out or keep an eye on over the coming months?
To give you an idea, the things we like include: Tom Waits, Luke Abbott, Nicolas Jaar, Cat Power, Prince, Twin Shadow, Metric, Nick Cave, dEUS, Actress...

weren't they around in about 2005?
how's your label going? remember seeing you post about it when we were lurking http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4352647

a couple of things we have found and liked recently (not sure if they're 2013 tips)
Night Class https://soundcloud.com/night-class/three-hours
British Theatre http://britishtheatre.bandcamp.com/releases (one of Oceansize's new bands)
-
Lots of Fleetwood Mac meets RnB seems to be being tipped, these two especially
HAIM https://soundcloud.com/haimtime/forever
Saint Lou Lou http://disconaivete.com/post/28846050648
...not sure if either of them will do as well as Lykke Li or Robyn, may end up lost in the hipster bargain bin with Deap Vally and Friends.Any of you heard Stumbleine? https://soundcloud.com/stumbleineuk
Or the guys from Foals and Friendly Fires new project? https://soundcloud.com/annie-mac-presents/free-music-monday-ed-congreave -

predictable reply from someone named after a Seafood song
as I'm sure you know, the chances of making money in music are slim to none these days (if we wanted to make money, we'd be setting up some horrible MySpace-like site for unsigned bands, and charging them money to stream and share their music...).
Chill. Don't be so cynical about everything, people like you give this place a bad name, which is a shame as there seems to be a lot of passionate people here. Looking at your profile, we suspect you'd probably like these guys: http://www.clashmusic.com/news/watch-pale-seas-bodies
We were just looking for some music that might excite us, and we noticed there wasn't a tips for 2013 thread after finding the 2012 one, so thought we'd start some. Simple as that.

Sylver Tongue
Charlotte Hatherly from Ash's new project could do quite well next year. Touring with Bat for Lashes soon. Saw a show earlier this year, which was pretty special. Couple of great singles already https://soundcloud.com/sylver-tongue
-
Blanck Mass / Fuck Buttons
Might be a chance of them crossing over (or at least getting a bit bigger) post-Olympics? This is obviously a very good sign of things to come: https://soundcloud.com/softwarelabel/blanck-mass-white-math
-
Hookworms
Toba Caldera
Crystal Head
Creatures Of Love
Hold Kiss Kill
Guile
Eaux
Oh! Ruin
Two Skies -
Rory Phillips
Another thing we've found when digging around the web. He was involved in Trash with Erol and has done some great remixes, but is not really a 'tip' sort of thing. If you're into ginormous electronic/house music he's well worth checking out https://soundcloud.com/roryphillips
-
F*ck Buttons sold out Heaven (1100 tix) in 2009
2 critically acclaimed albums. I think they're pretty established already
-
thank you, just flicking through these now
https://soundcloud.com/hookworms - friend saw them at Leeds, and I like their cheeky genre tags on their Soundcloud. Can imagine them touring with A Place to Bury Strangers.
Toba Caldera - a few things came up, is this them? http://tobacaldera.bandcamp.com/album/demo-1 Liking the intensity of it if so. Not totally sure about the vocals on first listen.
https://soundcloud.com/crystalhead - a little bar-rock in places for my taste, but can imagine it going down well live. Some killer QoTSA riffs.
Creatures Of Love - this them? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7ZuA9wXfhI
https://soundcloud.com/holdkisskill - they don't seem to have done much for a while. Be curious how this has progressed.
Guile - not an easy band to search for, got a link?
Eaux - Thanks for the reminder. Saw them supporting Chromatics earlier this year. Got potential if they can go beyond the Esben & the Witchiness of what they do (and maybe turn up their Factory Floor side). Seems like a very interesting band incubating in amongst what they're doing. https://soundcloud.com/moringritualrecordings/eaux-no-more-power
Oh! Ruin - quite different from the other stuff you suggested if this is them. Will come back to this http://thedailygrowl.co.uk/2010/04/06/oh-ruin/
https://soundcloud.com/two-skies - quite similar to the others above, but will give them another go. Seem like an act to see live?
-
is that really the capacity of Heaven? as a night club, maybe. It just doesn't seem THAT big.
I meant more crossing over into the Underworld, Orbital, Justice, Crystal Castles, etc league... -
Guile - http://soundcloud.com/guilemusic/deep-by-the-dockery
Toba Cladera have yet to capture their live intensity on record yet.
Hold Kiss Kill have been quiet for a few months sorting out their sound. Not been going long (since early 2011) and only played a few gigs.
That is the Creatures Of Love. Very good friends with The Joy FormidableOh! Ruin are mixing new stuff at the moment. The music currently on the internet for them is not a representation of what they are doing now.
All of them are really good live bands.
Eaux are 3 ex members of Sian Alice Group (Sian, Ben & Steve). Rupert (SAG's Drummer) is now in Oh! Ruin.

ps hi sean -
AlunaGeorge
Seems to be talked about by a lot of the same people. On Tri-Angle, and sounds a bit Nicola Roberts and Annie-ish but odder (not quite gone as far as Azelia or Minaj, but can imagine some of the album won't be too far) https://soundcloud.com/tri_angle_records/alunageorge-just-a-touch-1

it's September, month 9 of 12 of 2012
...and about 100 or so days until Xmas (I know This Morning did a countdown when I was having a tea break yesterday).
...and the BBC Sound of Poll will come out in first week of December.
...and websites will start running albums of the year lists from the end of October (as magazines December issues hit shelves first week of November)
Surely any 'band' that's going to make a name for themselves next year has done alright at all the festivals? Or maybe had some blog love for their demos? Or stuff like that?
Anyway, last year this thread started in July. -
thanks for this

Not sure about this myself, but he's being talked about and is managed by a former DiS Editor http://iambrolin.com/

they camped near at Latitude. WOULDN'T SHUT UP! Kept shouting their stage time. Went to see them. It was loud.
-
I really like David's Lyre
.. might be slightly too MOR indie for some people here, but that means he would cross over really well to the masses (maybe?).
Nice voice, great tunes ... what more would a new label want? -
Savages
look like they'll blow up next year, keep hearing more and more people talking them and of course their appearence on Jools.
-
Actually heard a chap from my hometown this year
Very impressed by his work. Am not associated with him in any way, just think he's a talented dude.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnLUcRbFkts
He's just supported Tom Williams and The Boat down in Kent, and also happens to be the best drummer I know by some distance.

Give him a look, Sean.

Went to Liverpool Psych Fest last month.

Helicon -
weirdly successful. only primarily because they annoyed me so much, I wanted to write a horrible review.
-
thank you for being nice.
-
I think he's stopped being David's Lyre and is working on something new. Did really like his LP tho. Up there with Keaton Henson in the young-sensitive-souls of 2012 list.
-
they seem destined to be the new Terris. Saw them at Great Escape, and watched the Jools footage, I'm just not hearing what other people can hear. Am sure they'll end up being tipped all over the shop, and then the album will get some 'i told you so' and lukewarm reviews, and then they'll either disappear like Wu Lyf or come back with some fresh take on Electrelane, and do a Horrors inspite of the hype... They seem like a good bunch, but not really worthy of ALL of the buzz. That's a heavy load of hype for any band to carry, and they can probably only disappoint people. Then again, maybe they're new Fall or something, but it'll take decades to know that...
-
Drop Out Venus
Any of you heard them? Seem like a bubble-gum twist on Hole. First British rock act I've heard for a while that has made me step back a bit and wonder if I could be a fan. Haven't seen them live yet, and not sure about some of the other tracks, but this single is a bit special: http://wsspresents.tumblr.com/post/34225606281/augustation-drop-out-venus-elastic-teen-rent

A couple from me.
The best new band I've seen recently and have been telling anyone who'll listen are SeaWitches. https://soundcloud.com/seawitches
I do like everything I've heard from Woman's Hour, looking forward to seeing them again next month, enjoyed them last year when I saw them but didn't blow me away live. Blessa in a similar vein and hae been enjoying their track.
Lots more but that's enough for one sitting. Oh, you're all welcome to start to love Lockets too, debut album coming out on vinyl in December - https://soundcloud.com/lockets/sets/camera-shy-full-album
BBC list will surely include Haim and Daughter and probably Savages too I guess.

I think they're brilliant
Stunning live and I liked the single they put out. I'm looking forward to a full-length when it comes - hoping they give themselves/get given enough time to make the kind of record they're capable of making, rather than rushing it to cash in on the attention. Although there's been a shit-ton of hype around them, their attitude so far has suggested they won't get railroaded into that. Hope I'm right.

My pals band Fans of Faye
from Stourbridge, 100% will get somewhere. Got management, booking agent, pluggers, etc & just released a great album!

..
Really digging Vision Fortune recently, London band, done a couple of releases on Conan from Mazes label Italian Beach babes. Would fit in well on labels like Thrill Jockey, Sacred Bones etc, kind of like droney guitar music focused strongly around repetition and rhythm. Haven't seen them live yet but they're playing White Heat tomorrow so going to check them out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25o6Ul3ghJs
A band from Canada called Each Other, actually on tour in Europe at the moment or about to be, kind of sound like Women but they can sing/do group harmonies live(Mike from Women actually freely admits to this). Metz sound guy described them a sounding like the Fall playing the Bee Gees. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3rw8jHi1As
Talking of Women, Mike and Matt have a new project together the name of which escapes me, start recording this month.
Diana from Toronto seem to be riding a wave of hype, played their first proper shows at CMJ and killed it, single coming out Forst Family(Gorilla vs Bear's label) and in negotiations with a few big indies, a remix from a pretty huge UK electronic producer on the way as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSSaEDqfLp0
Merchandise have every big indie falling over themselves to try and sign them, shame they're terrible live. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdIlsTpf5wM
Port St Willow should do pretty well, Katie who used to play in Braids is playing keyboards for them, kind of sounds like The Antlers/2nd Bon iver album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UikdZ3D8TOY
Mozart's Sister have a lot of people pawing over her, managed by the woman at 4AD who signed Grimes and Tune-Yards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy1u4v2LIfU
The Skaters (not James Ferraro's band) were getting talked about my a lot of Major Label people at CMJ, had the Strokes tweeting about them, feature a member of The Paddingtons(LOLZ) in the line up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6tA3ddJSrNw
Yet more canadians, a band called Solar Year from Montreal, dark electronic two piece, one of the guys used to be in that band Clues with Olden from The Unicorns and a guy who was in Arcade Fire. Grimes did guest vocals on a track of their's. http://www.gorillavsbear.net/2012/07/22/solar-year-brotherhood-feat-grimes/
Slight JAG as he's on my label, but a guy from Chicago called J Fernandez, featured in Sean's weekend listening a while back and with support from Pitchfork, Noisey etc, kind of sounds like Broadcast meets Grizzly Bear. Hasn't played live yet with his first two EPs being recorded in his apartment with him playing every instrument but currently putting together a live band to tour with and record a studio debut with. https://soundcloud.com/moringritualrecordings/no-luck
Ryan Hemsworth is one of the most in demand new producers/remixers around, remixed Grimes and is working with a fair few big name rappers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0uO-jKZoHU

Young + Sick, just did guest vocals on a track by Mmoths, nice R&B sounding stuff, voice kind of reminds me of Alexis Taylor if he could hit the higher notes, first track he's posted on soundcloud has had nearly 25,000 listens since it went up a month ago https://soundcloud.com/youngandsick

Radar Men From The Moon
Dutch instrumental Band playing Stoner Rock. I f*cking love it.
Echo Forever and Atomic Mother in particular from the Album Echo Forever
Gonna try and book them to play for us early next year in London.

Add also the new album Heartthrob from Tegan and Sara in January 2013
It seems it will be more electronic than previous releases. The songs released so far (Closer, I'm Not Your Hero) are both great.

.
Mike was playing drums in Porcelain Raft for a while, and had a band called Friendo with his ex girlfriend who did a little tour over here with Cold Pumas a couple of years back, and was also playing with Jordan who he was in Azeda Booth with on a project called Ram Hoss.
Matt's been touring with Chad Vangaalen quite a bit. Don't think Pat is doing anything.
