Tips for 2012
It may seem insanely premature but I've done one of these threads in early July every year for the past 4 years, and the result has always been fascinating, as well as fairly prescient at predicting what will be tipped come new band season. Or just quite good at throwing a whole heap of bands worth checking out into one mega-thread.
I guess the city-festival season (like Great Escape, Camden Crawl, dot-to-dot etc) and the small stages at the big festivals are often a fairly good indicator, so this thread sort of doubles as a list of must-see bands during festival season, which is handy.
Here are the four that I think might/could/should make the BBC Sound of 2012 list.
NEW LOOK
Somewhere between Bat for Lashes and TLC. There's quite a lot of dark-pop around but my monies on this lot stepping out of the purply shadows.
http://soundcloud.com/k7-records/new-look-the-ballad
HEY SHOLAY
I worked with the singer of this Sheffield-based band in a previous life and I wasn't quite prepared for what I would see when I saw them at Great Escape. It was somewhere mesmerising between prog-pop, Jeff Buckley and 'Forever'-era Charlatans.
http://soundcloud.com/heysholaycloud/the-bears-the-bees-and-no
STAY+
Chill-rave? Snark-wave? Sigh-fi? Whatever you wanna call it, the Manchester-based band-formerly-known-as-ChristianAIDS were ruddy great live when I caught one of their first shows (for DiS at the Great Escape). The stuff they've put online so far has been quite downbeat but the show had some clear signs they might be one of the few 'blog-bands' to cross-over for quite a while.
http://soundcloud.com/nme_radar/christian-aids-stay
FOE
She's already been remixed by Atari Teenage Riot and signed to a major label. And her debut lp of likely quite brash bitch-pop, which is a little more Kills than Uffie, and Polly than Gaga, is either gonna erupt into the stratosphere or be the start a career as some cult provocateur.
http://soundcloud.com/foe-mania
I have some other thoughts but I don't wanna hog the thread from the off. Over to you...

not a bad shout. they've managed to shuffle beneath the radar and they are opening the mainstage of reading this year (which I got goose-bumps watching Biffy Clyro do the same thing about a year before their first leap up the ladder)
would reckon
s.c.u.m. make it onto the BBC list - they seem to be getting their act together. very impressive live
Are you for real??
Saw S.C.U.M. support The Raveonettes and they were atrocious. One of the worst bands I've seen in ages.
SCUM
have never really been that good and have absolutely no chance in hell of making it onto the BBC list.
A heavy abacus is getting serious radio 1 airplay and I think its lingering just outside the top 200, which it may break into.
I hope so. Great band, superb live and genuinely nice people.
Breton innit?
2012 will be theirs i'm reckoning.
Tall Ships
I hope
JFC
haven't heard of them
any good?
I really don't like that FOE single.
Just saying.
Putting my professional hat on.
I reckon Fixers will be on a few tips lists. Chad Valley, too?
Oxford crew, stand up.
Can't think of any major label pop in store for late 2011/early 2012 - but that, clearly.
On the pop tip
I wonder what's going to happen with Ronika. Her first single was very early-Madonna but she has a good deal of more credible early 80s New York club influences (Quincy Jones, Tom Tom Club) and does it all herself, meaning she could in press terms fit into the gap Little Boots seems to have vacated.
Wouldn't be surprised to see Daughter given a push, there's a lot of Marling about her but in these folk-populist days that's no bad thing and you can tell her storytelling is coming on over time. I put on Evans The Death on Wednesday night and they were ace, five 18 year olds already signed to Fortuna Pop! and could go some way down a similar route to that label's POBPAH, noisily melodic indiepop with more of a vocal presence.
there is no 'like' with FOE
she's like tobogganing, you either love it and throw yourself into it or you loathe the idea and don't walk to the top of the hill in the first place.
I'm writing that one down for future use
Hopefully a couple of these will go places
The History of Apple Pie
Friends
Still Corners
Keep Shelly In Athens
I Break Horses
Blood Orange
i really like Still Corners but I think of the hazy Sub Pop signings, memoryhouse are the ones who may very well steal the show (especially if they end up on tour with m83 later this year... if DiS promoted m83 gigs, etc, etc...)
Forgot Memoryhouse
seems like i've been listening to them for ages
Memoryhouse :(
Unless they pull a big suprise, they are a worthless band
Still Corners
Will blow up xx style this winter
Well done on making a list
of all the worst names bands around
SLOWDIM
It's times like this that you wonder
if the media is valuing new-ness over quality.
I'm thinking:
Holy Other- Somehow lumbered with the wearisome witch house tag, but so much more. With U is an excellent little EP, with obvious Burial and Dilla influences, so I reckon an album from him next year could be really big.
Re: Stay+- a bit too unimaginative on the beats front to be explosive in 2012 imo, we'll see obviously, but if they start mixing it up a little instead of constant four to the floor, I think they'd offer a lot more and 2012 could be a big one for them.
also:
Shlohmo, Ghosting Season, Greenwood Sharps, Jacques Greene, Dro Carey, Breton
i was a bit disappointed with Holy Other live the other week with How to Dress Well (who, as the maker of my second favourite album this year, was also disappointing, so it may very well have been my mood that night). curious to hear where he's headed.
i love Ghost Season, obvs. And really like Dro Carey, had forgotten about him/them. will check out some of these.
I'm not too surprised the live shows are a bit ropey, he said the other day that he's only done 3 gigs to date, so it'll be interesting to see how the live show develops.
Dro Carey's great, he just doesn't seem to release anything! lots of mixtapes flying around and clearly immensely talented, so looking forward to a proper EP/album. Check out shlohmo, and Greenwood Sharps- both a similar melodic post-dubsteppy vibe but with added rnb, and pretty consistent from what I've heard so far...
Fingers crossed for a couple of the following...
Niteflights: http://soundcloud.com/niteflightsmusic
Endor: http://www.myspace.com/endor
Wahington Irving: http://soundcloud.com/washirvband
And I really think Admiral Fallow will go pretty big next year.
I honestly don't understand why...
ALPINES aren't massive. I've mentioned this once before on here. Great image, amazing tunes (droney, dark but mega pop melodies.) Definitely my tip for 2012.
http://www.myspace.com/alpinesmusic
yeah, they played after Hey Sholay at our Great Escape party. Quite like them, an old friend of mine signed them so I didn't wanna be nepotistic in bigging them up (and think New Look are slightly more interesting/DiS-friendly)
I have been put-off by the PR campaign
Seemed to be in place even before most songs were written. And also, in a Guardian feature on them, they definitely gave the impression that they had planned their rise very deliberately, as if they were exploitong the market.
that's a shame, as their live show didn't seem particularly cynical but considering they'd barely played any shows as Alpines, it did seem a little bit like a band who'd been around for a bit and changed their name...
I don't get that from them at all...
Related: That young lady from Alpines is my fanboy crush of the year:
http://www.vevo.com/watch/alpines/cocoon/GBUV71100985
yeah, have http://679artists.com/ or Neon Gold signed anyone lately? ;-)
are you going to the Mechanical Bride gig at St Giles? I'll be djing, come say hello http://www.rockfeedback.com/gig/314/mechanical-bride/
if tasseomancy arent doing very well next year id be very surprised
Like twin joanna newsoms playing creepy folk with hints of droney textures in the background
they sound like a really classy Coco Rosie or a less shrill Newsom. Liking it.
CLOUT!
good tip
thanks
Most acts I picked for 2011...
seem to be gearing up for more success in 2012 with either album releases late this year, or next...
Lanterns on the Lake
Still Corners
Let's Buy Happiness
Veronica Falls
I Break Horses
Summer Camp
Gazelle Twin
Additions would be:
Rachel Sermanni
Camille Delean
Light Asylum
loads more but I'll leave it there as I'm meant to be doing something else right now.
St Vincent has to go global soon surely?
How about
Bigz
Fixers
Queen Of Hearts
Cold Specks
Ronika
Lana Del Rey
Black Light Dinner Party
Lucy Rose
Dog Is Dead
Church Of Frozen Tears - best thing to happen to drone in a long while (obviously they're not going to be HUGE because they make drone, but you know...)
Sweet Gorilla
surprised it took that long for someone to mention them.
why are sweet gorilla a running joke on this site?
They perpetrated one of the most legendary JAGs
OF ALL TIME
A running joke?
Pfft. they're the future dude, check out ollie chubbs solo work, its da best.
Any posts using the name Ollie Chubb are fraudulent and have not been created by Ollie Chubb.
:D
`Chill-rave? Snark-wave? Sigh-fi? Whatever you wanna call it...`
Nobody calls it these things Sean, just you.
Are Sean's stupid pretend names for non-existent sub-genres killing music? Etc.
I quite like sigh-fi
What about 'po-fi'
for po-faced low fi?
pie-fi?
Givers
definitely Givers. Can see them going huge.
naw Slowdim
oooooh facebook friends.
(slowdim too obvs)
DREW PRICE'S BERMUDA TRIANGLE
frontiers could be
Vondelpark
Ghost Outfit
Slime
Keep Shelly in Athens
i love that Vondelpark ep
60's - Beatles, 70's - Sex Pistols, 80's - The? Smiths, 90's - Oasis, 00's - Arctic Monkeys, 10's - THE KAYAS. Wait no longer!!!!!!!!!
I Imagine Trophy Wife will appeal to many if they're planning an album
also in the "if" category: Lord Huron
Django Django - my faovurite predictions thread entry for years now.
been quite a good reaction to wot I wrote about New Look
http://drownedinsoundcloud.com/post/7385424635/new-look-the-ballad
That's it, I've cracked it!
I'm going to call my band "Dorothy Perkins"
My hopes for 2012
Pennyblack
Spotlight Kid
Blindness
Hold Kiss Kill
Domino State
I reckon
New Look are definitely going places.
Think Zun Zun Egui could have a good one with the new album coming out on Bella Union.
Dam Mantle is going to have a good with his new record out late 2011 which is amazing.
Holy Other I'm really liking.
Pretty Lights is huge is america now but not so much over here. Sometime really soon here would have thought.
And come on to the person mentioning Alpines above, they are truly awful!
I would expect a band like Zun Zun Egui to take longer than usual to get recognition
Because of how eclectic they are really. Debut should be one of the most unique things around though.
i like domino state
but no fucking way
Kind of want to keep him all to myself
so to speak, but Youth Lagoon is far and away the best thing I've heard this year. Properly obsessed with three songs currently available.
I've been over-doing the jagging a bit recently but you can read an interview with him and listen to the three songs here;
http://bit.ly/rmZNtR
dark-pop prog-pop Chill-rave Snark-wave Sigh-fi blog-band bitch-pop
Fuck off.
Did anyone else read this in the voice of Nigel Blackwell?
no, michael stipe
</trolled>
motoro faam might have a newun out
if so, they might. might. MIGHT.
...
Indian Red Lopez
Fatherson
Kyla La Grange will be big, maybe Fixers as well
if they can fix the live thing.
Am I the only person who keeps reading this as Tipis for 2012?
No? Just me then? :(
Niki & The Dove
Definitely definitely definitely them. Album coming out on Mercury, EP in September, main tour support with a big band in the works...
Hopefully Rhosyn will finally do something
Summer Camp should be massive off the autumn album
Outfit - from what I've heard of theirs, they deserve a LOT of attention. Without sounding like a massive tosser, I haven't been as excited about a British "guitar band", for want of a better term, in a long time. Like WIld Beasts, with a little Kraftwerk in places, super creepy and sensual...
I love that Memoryhouse EP, especially the newly produced release version
I know they're already beloved in some quarters and they're never about to make the BBC list, but Factory Floor - that debut is going to be phenomenal...
Doing a tips for 2012 thread in July is worse than
doing an album of the year thread in October. Which will probably happen. Again.
I've got big hopes for:
Pederast Party
Beach Club
Memory Bungalow
WolfTiger
~~£$£~~
Hazywazydreamscape
Rebekah Brooks' Auburn Minge
and

finally getting around to listening to some of these that i hadn't heard
anything else people is loving?
Dom still have the potential to 'do a Girls' imo
Always take a bottle of water with you if you're using the tube in hot weather
If you've got Olympic tickets make sure to set off for the venues with plenty of time to spare
Stop. Look. And listen. Before crossing the road.
The weather can be quite changeable in spring/autumn
so it's a good idea to take an umbrella out with you.
anyone found anything recently that's worthy of being added to this list?
Clams Casino
Disclosure
Pandr Eyez
Patterns
Lana Del Rey
Flight Facilities
Echo Lake are my favourite recent discovery
I love this song, its the best shoe gazey thing Ive heard in ages
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_cPHUylaVM
It would be nice to see Withered Hand do well too. And someone mentioned him up there but Youth Lagoon is great and has an album out soon on Fat Possum.
Young Silence is excellent
Are they releasing an album then?
The Milk
maybe?
Inc.
Debut EP one of the most impressive things I've heard this year.
Japandroids
Perhaps the year they move from contenders to heavyweights?
I hope so.
Hey!
http://drownedinsound.com/news/4143626-dis-tip--hey-sholay-are-coming-your-way-if-you-live-in-the-uk
just about to do my BBC Sound of... tips
Interesting that Lana del Rey won't be eligible. And therefore there seems to be no consensus 'big in 2012' act. Might squander a vote on David Lynch...
Can't speak for what's happening in urban, which'll probably dominate 2012 mainstream discussion
but with not much sign we need one other than there hasn't been a successful launch in that area for a while there seems to be a concerted effort to launch new girl groups, what with the pushes beginning recently for Oh My!, Icona Pop, WooWoos and War Of Words, who had a weird cross-media launch last Wednesday when the BBC, NME and Popjustice all ran introductory features on the same day.
Reckon Fixers will do well in Sound Of, they've got another EP in December and while they almost feel like part of the psych-indie furniture they've not had an album out or a big single. Slightly less high profile but compatriots Trophy Wife and Chad Valley likewise. Zulu Winter had a queue at Swn (though that might have equally been to get in for Y Niwl afterwards), though if the NME are going to get behind anyone with one 7" out it'll more likely be Theme Park.
got a feeling
Theme Park might be the Vaccines of 2012
Watch out for us.
We're an unsigned 4-piece from London called Lion Tops we've got big plans for next year. Keep your ears and eyes open...
http://liontops.bandcamp.com
Playing @The Bowery New Oxford St. on 11.11.11
I actually misread that as "we're an uninspired 4-piece from London"
I haven't listened to the band though so that may not be a reflection.
Don't get your hopes up love.
innit
Blawan, Black Diamond Bay, Mosca, Russo, War of Words, Objekt, Breton, Zulu Winter, Clams Casino.
Oh and obviously
Jessie Ware and Azealia Banks.
you not 'tipping' Spectre?
turned this thread into a playlist - what's BLATANTLY missing?
and anything you'd like to kick off either because it doesn't seem 'tip'-worthy any more...

Alt-J
...they seem to have their heads screwed on the right way.
*plenty of cash to throw at it
Cool.
Lianne La Havas (last week) and The Phoenix Foundation (this week) both get the Later With Jools exposure, which should help no end.
Frank Ocean seems to be getting loads of hype so a good chance I reckon
Blouse?
Might be worth chucking them into the playlist. The playlist is really helpful though, Sean, so thanks for putting it together.
oh yeah!
i really liked that Blouse single. slipped them in after Chad Valley.
kinda made this for my own benefit (...and if anyone else likes it, it's a bonus) as i was really struggling to pick a third choice for my BBC Sound of... list. Finger was tempted to bash David Lynch in there and snigger maniacally at the thought of daytime R1 playing his tracks...
Might as well stick Jai Paul in
Again... Are we expecting any more material from him? I know there's another track knocking about somewhere isn't there? Also, Outfit is the only other omission I can spot.
Outfit are a good call
They've been getting quite a few blogs excited.
Oh as have Theme Park.
In terms of pop music MNEK,WooWoos and Oh My are my final suggestions, but these acts are not at all DiS reader territory.
Just thought
Skrillex hasn't had anything out in the UK yet, has he?
Yeah all his stuff has been released in the UK so far
he took up most of the top ten on beatport for ages. He's always had releases on itunes too. Beatport is pretty much international, but I bet his singles get re-released soon cos of the hype and they'll be touted as his first UK singles. Pretty sure that Ruffneck track is getting a re-release now/soon since its on radio one quite a bit but it's been about on general release since june all over the world.
Re: Skillrex
God yeah, both him and The Weeknd haven't had any chart action in the UK, so could easily be pushed as 'new' and end up on the Sound of List. Fearne Cotton has just started playing Skrillex which suggests a mainstream / chart push will be on and Fearne was selected as one of the 'tastemaking' judges last year.
Charlene Soraia
Get past her 'profile launching' cover, and she is a wonderful homebuilt electric guitar songsmith with a vocal that made Captain Hook weak at the knees. Her early EPs are little works of art, and with a debut album out soon, good luck to the lass.
Bear Cavalry
Great new band. Bound to do well next year.
Soundcloud link:
http://soundcloud.com/bearcavalry/sets/maple-trails-ep
Only heard these today, were supporting them in Brighton in a couple of weeks. Been listening to Custom Hands and Roman Summer flat out.
Cool. Where are they playing? Great live band.
I'm still going to tip...
LHF, Dro Carey, T.Williams, Jam City, Damu, Golau Glau, Royal T from my tips last year because they'll all prob build on what they've done this year. Then people like Blawan who in my eyes is pretty established now but he'll keep rolling on for sure. Sully and Kuedo always need to be tipped, you can start with them now though no need to wait until 2012 for them or anyone one here tbh. Objekt will prob keep improving and break out more. Main Attrakionz have killed it this year with to many mixtapes to mention so they'll prob build on that next year and get more attention. People like Ill Blu, Preditah, Funkystepz and Champion, will hopefuly have a big one next year too. I dunno, loads of people.
will have to have a listen to all of these today
yeah i reckon Main Attrakionz will be big next year
i kind of thought 808s & dark grapes would do it for them. maybe it has in some places. not sure
I would merely recommend
Swapping the Lord Huron track "Mighty" for "The Stranger" off the same E.P. Was the song that first grabbed me, and others I know too.
Gabriel Kahane
Annoyingly talented singer-songwriter, has worked a lot with Sufjan, already fairly popular here and there. Kind of a lighter Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley or similar. This tune has hardly been out of my head for the past wee while:
http://open.spotify.com/track/6fID4iyzg3GLWtH7HGiyhH
not sure why i didn't previously mention
LAUREL HALO
OUTFIT

Cosmic Matrix
Been turning people onto this guy's stuff for a while now, but the stuff he's been producing recently is amazing:
http://cosmicmatrixx.blogspot.com/
so...
how well are your tips doing? who did we forget? is tipping bands dead?
Interestingly
there seems to be a lot less short-term hype about bands and things seem to be spreading out a lot slower. All the great reviews from SXSW, for instance, seemed to be from established acts or hip hop artists who've been around a couple of years. And all the 'indie' buzz this year seems to be from returning bands like Beach House. And even Grimes is on her second or third album or something.
yeah, I noticed that a little bit too.
Sort of. Tho with Grimes it kinda seems like she's a new act, consolidating previous love.
I seem to be in a minority
but in the indie/mish mash/whatever sphere, I think it has been a really slow year, for new bands as well as more established acts. So tipping bands is having a little breather...a lot of those in your playlist either released music in 2011, or have yet to release much. I have higher hopes for the rest of the year.
I think it's good
that things are slowing down. The 'hype cycle' was ultimately a bit destructive for a lot of bands. It's a lot better for everyone if things are taking their time now.
2013?
Who should we be checking out? http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4414217
FIX
