Snob-Pop
Yuhknow, like, pop music* for people who hate popular music music...
Y'know, like, Robyn and Jessie Ware and _______ and _________ ?
* = sub-thread: why is pop music now a genre, rather than what is currently most popular?

pop music
self-consciously unchallenging - populist as opposed to popular
oh,
and what's with everyone reviving the use of 'snob'?
I've heard it about a dozen times in the last 5 days in reference to music - who started with that?
SHUT UP SEAN
idk maybe The Chap fit into this category
but for all the irony in their lyrics, the music is unironically fun (and interesting)
Y'know, like, Robyn and Jessie Ware...
Probably because these people like just the best artists from a hated/not liked too much (by them) music genre. And indeed Robyn, Jessie Ware and few others are excellent pop artists.
STOP MAKING UP GENRES
STOP MAKING SENSE/CENTS
Janelle Monae
no
I don't like it either
but if we're going to call Robyn 'pop' then Janelle Monae isn't going to get any special consideration either.
she definitly is pop alright
But I don't think she fits in sean's label of snob pop. When her new album comes out I predict a crossover single or two and some mainstream/ radio one appreciation. But it'l also be a great album to satisfy the likes of us.
do the snob pop
shake your snob pop
i've not heard jessie ware
is she the latest pop artist we have to pretend to like because a couple of bloggers/zine people are mates with her or her pr?
I thought it was a Jessie J clothing range
shows how up with the kids I am.
haha
brilliant.
This is Jessie Ware.

Quite a lot of my free time is currently devoted to watching this on repeat.
Mainly that little lift from the middle eight into the bridge at 2.53
Mmmmmmmmm
Actually Jessie Ware is excellent. Really.
I love subtle pop music
and that's exactly what this album is
Yes. She's the real deal.
I love unsubtle pop music
if I'm honest.
Like Kesha? XD
I think that The Guardian/Observer
actually have shares in Jessie Ware. It's like they have a competition on how many articles they can write about her.
This is a horrible, horrible thread.
(I'm going to add Annie and OhLand to the list though)
And The Good Natured
i hate you sean
Now I'm here in a sticky situation
Got a little trouble, yep and now I'm pacin'
Five minutes, ten minutes, now it's been an hour
Don't wanna think too hard, but I'm sour
O you mean like Robyn, Katy B, Jessie Ware, Sugarbabes, Girls Aloud, Rihanna & the like
the kind of artists that produce well written & catchy songs?
Was meant to include Rachel Stevens on that list
Rihanna? I don't like her voice.
That's fine
I didn't say you did :)
I'd honestly have more time for Rihanna
if she just learned the difference between 'sultry' and 'bored stupid'.
Fionna Apple
Cat Power, Neko Case, Tori Amos
These are more indie rock than pop.
People are just naming female solo artists now
Yeah, I guess
i wouldn't say fiona apple is pop music
her singles ain't gonna sell big or get alot of radio play
That Scandi one where she bangs on about how she crashed her car
today and doesn't care etc etc
Checked that song. Very catchy.
Swedes are experts in pop music anyway.
there's more than a whiff of misogyny in this thread
hmm
in what sense?
in the sense that female artists aren't afforded the same level of depth of analysis
of their musicality & lyrical content as male artists are
that they are seen as surface or decoration or as light entertainment or spectacle and/or are actually marketed that way
something like that anyway
actually name some male pop artists from this decade you like
who aren't rappers
why limit it to 'from this decade' ?
and also, and this underlines my point somewhat, a male artist is (historically) more likely to be seen as a credible 'artist' and thus be put in a broader category range than 'pop'
what I mean is that if you imagine Prince to be a 'serious' artist because he does creative things (despite being wildly popular) and at the same time think of Robyn as 'just' pop music then you ignore her self-expression and tend to view her as product
but anyway
someone else can extend this argument if they like
it's just this entire thread seemed to consist of female artists as if their efforts were by definition (or categorisation) less worthy of deeper contemplation
They're not going to sleep with you
not buying that
for every prince there is a bjork or Kate Bush who produced pop music in their time and "serious" artistry
its a simple fact that currently females are leading the way in solo pop efforts. thus our discussion on said snob pop involves alot of female artists
Good point
Justin Timberlake
OK, pop...
Lights, Lykki Li
I'm still on the female thing, though...guys, hmm?
Not Justin Timberlake, fuck Justin Timberlake...
