Gwen Stefani
someone's going to make a post about the genre cycle and which genre will win this year aren't they?
Will guitar music be dead or alive if the Ting Tings win?
If they win we will be too busy dodging the flying pigs
to worry about such matters
Ting Tings will not even be nominated, surely.
Not unless the world has gone completely mad
that album was the definition of a critical mauling and commercial failure
are sarcastic posts by DiSers regarding stuff killing music killing music ?
fucking atrocious year for British music
cheers
a handful of those aside, of course
that is one uninspiringly wank list.
honestly thought 2k11 was poor for music releases in general
mind you there was quite a bit of good stuff
that didn't make this list
are you implying the mercury music nominations are in any way an accurate representation of the state of british music?
please
for some reason i find it amusing that all music betting is in the 'novelty' section ?
Stick a fiver on Emeli Sande
Her turn at the Olympics opening ceremony won't have done her chances any harm.
22-1's pretty good for Django Django
How much for Hot Chip? I reckon they must be in with a chance
The Invisible got a nomination for their debut
And this years follow-up (Rispah) is very good, if not strikingly original. Deserves a nod.
Really? 6/4 for Alt-J?
i'd fucking love it if tindersticks won
the truly radical choice
instead of honoring the next bright thing, or the sound of the underground, or a much loved indie that's crossed into the mainstream.
Alt J's album was pretty rubbish let's be honest.
apart from "Taro".
Nah I think it's great
There's no obvious winner in that list though
orbital but not hot chip?
youre having a giraffe, paddy power.
I love both of their latest albums
but honestly rate the Orbital one higher.
Orbital is better
Laura M for three nominations in a row
For sure
Either TrioVD or Bilbao Syndrome's records should be up
They're pretty much the same band - Either way I'd be happy - Mercury needs some jazz-metal to shake stuff up
Surely Rustie is worth a punt at 25/1?
What with the After Light single blowing up in the mainstream and that?
Then again they never nominate any of my picks, so I wouldn't go putting the ol' farm on it.
I'm pretty sure I didn't this myself here. Bit needy.
66/1??
That's crazy. He fits pretty much the whole bill innovative, chart bothering, breaking in the US...
Would've thought he was nailed on for at least a nomination :/
I don't think I understand this award.
finally stopped caring
Alt-J really should win it.
A brilliant, completely unique record.
Django Django might be worth a fiver at 22s.
unique? uh...
Glad we agree.
You're wrong, that album is crap.
DO NOT FEED
are you serious?
a person saying a critically-acclaimed album is good is trolling now, is that where we're at?
fwiw I like Alt-J
but I know what you're like- next thing you'll be calling them the new Roxy Music
(the above ^ is meant in the best spirit obviously)
The Alt-J album is fucking superb
yes, it is a lovely wee unique album.
i'd put my money on
Django Django or Alt J, knowing the Mercury...
or Kate Bush
though perhaps not the year after PJ Harvey.
to be even nominated
is to have won already. right guys?
I'd like Django Django to win this
If Ed Sheeran does I'm literally done with music.
django django are fucking tedious
but i'd still rather they won than ed sheeran
i'd like the £20k to go to someone who can use it, someone for who £20k is a lot of money, but known enough that they can use it meaningfully
it was partly for this reason that the xx winning the other year was great
I'd love Slow Club to be nominated
Let's hope they've actually entered.
Plan B not eligible?
TINDERSTICKS!!!
Should already have been nominated at least for their first 2 albums and Simple Pleasure - if The Something Rain doesn't make the list it'll be a travesty. Though with M People as previous winners, maybe it's a travesty already.
Surely Field Music have decent odds for Plumb
I'd hope so anyway.
despite my love for Alt-J
they should have been up for winning.
Putting my mortgage on Kate Bush.
I will buy you all a pint after. If she doesn't win, it is proof that this prize is rigged/political.
no chanc
e
I know. It is miles better than the rest of the list put together though.
when are they announed again?
Tindersticks are long overdue but they probably won't be nominated.
It would be several levels of wonderful if Pulled Apart By Horses won
Just for the moment Jools Holland read out the results.
pulled apart bu horSES
that is one kickass record.
Would be nice if Richy H won, but he won't.
can see The 2 Bears and Hot Chip both squeezing on
the Ting Tings???
Would like to see Portico Quartet nominated again
Self-titled was quality and a big leap forward.
Would like to see Django Django nominated, and I reckon Rustie might be the token 'edgy'/electronic nomination.
Spiritualized will probably be nominated, and might even win, just from the overdue/great reviews combo (though you could probably say the same about Richard Hawley and Kate Bush ey)
wonder why The Horrors
aren't in there
Have they had an album out this year?
Not a single one of those records is great.
And at least half of them are shite. Including the Tindersticks, Django Django, and Alt-J.
LOOK AT ME!!!!!!!!!!1
LOOK AT HOW ALTERNATIVE I AM
I just don't get the appeal of any of them
It's a personal thing. All my favourite records this year have been Canadian or American. The only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head are Hot Chip and Internet Forever.
It's a personal thing - opinion?
but they are shite - presented as fact
Both Alt-J and Django Django are decent records but no more than that really.

Of those, the 12 I have liked the most I've listened to are probably:
alt-J
Bill Ryder-Jones (I think he's a darkhorse to make the mix)
Django Django
Fanfarlo
Fionn Regan
Graham Coxon
Kasabian
Kate Bush
Mara Carlyle (I think she too could be a significant surprise nominee if she is submitted)
Rustie
The Twilight Sad
Tindersticks
I think Orbital have a very good chance
odds on hot chip seem to be shortening by the day
could it be their year?
Some excellent albums that are missing from above...
Islet "Illuminated People"
The Wave Pictures "Long Black Cars"
The Cribs "In The Belly of the Brazen Bull"
FOE "Bad Dream Hotline"
Los Campesinos! "Hello Sadness"
Veronica Falls "Veronica Falls"
Wiley "Evolve or Be Extinct"
Actress "R.I.P."
Rustie "Glass Swords"
Zun Zun Egui "Katang"
Blood Orange "Coastal Grooves"
Michachu & The Shapes "Never"
Future of the Left "The Plot Against Common Sense"
I think those all would qualify?
I think...
Wave Pictures, Blood Orange or Future of The Left have released the best UK album in that period. None of these will win, or be nominated I should think.
I'm liking a lot more UK music than previous years
My favourites being:
Meursault - Something For The Weakened
Grasscut - Unearth
Sons of Noel & Adrian - Knots
Admiral Fallow - Tree Bursts In Snow
Clock Opera - Ways To Forget
Laura J. Matin - The Hangman
Diagrams - Black Light
Lazarus & The Planecrash - Horseplay
With Joyful Lip - Oneironautics
Lund Quartet - Lund Quartet
and The Real Tuesday Weld - The Last Werewolf from last year.
Looking at those odds
I am already depressed about this year's Mercury Prize
I refuse to pay it any regard.
Kate Bush has got to win it, surely?
Especially when considering the mediocrity of many of the other nominees. Would love Tindersticks to win though.
I thought Field Music would be involved in this
Not long to go
Anyone wanna revise their choices? Our staff had a stab at who they think could/should be nominated http://drownedinsound.com/news/4145464-dis-predicts--the-mercury-prize-2012-nominees
Had a punt on jessie Ware at 20/1 but max stake was 11.83...I think she's nailed on to win, wanted to put 100 on it!
Would love to see nominations for the Twilight Sad and Future Of The Left - think the former may get one but not the latter sadly :-( one name that hasn't been mentioned that's really surprised me is The Cast Of Cheers. I would have thought they'd be worth a shout - unusual enough to be nominated, catchy enough to have a mass appeal and Luke Smith of Clor's production being kudos enough for a nom?
Maccabies would be a deserved winner I reckon.
Wouldn't begrudge it to Lianne La Havas either.
Errors deserve a nomination but probably won't get one. Someone else mentioned FOE up there ^ as well, excellent album.
Nominations + PP odds
http://www.paddypower.com/bet/novelty-betting/music/mercury-music-prize
Alt-J (An Awesome Wave) 4/6
Django Django (Django Django) 7/2
Field Music (Plumb) 7/1
Jessie Ware (Devotion) 7/1
Richard Hawley (Standing At The Sky's Edge) 10/1
The Maccabees (Given To The Wild) 16/1
Michael Kiwanuka (Home Again) 16/1
Lianne La Havas (Is Your Love Big Enough) 16/1
Ben Howard (Every Kingdom) 20/1
Plan B (Ill Manors) 25/1
Roller Trio (Roller Trio) 25/1
Sam Lee (Ground Of Its Own) 33/1
Surprised Lianne La Havas and Michael Kiwanuka are considered such long shots
I reckon they'll both come in substantially.
odds
are aleady going in. get on your horse..
this is the most boring, meh list in years
i can't even be arsed to get worked up about it
No Florence/BBC/Sheeran/Kindness/Orbital
Pretty flat list for me.
Plan B's odds good considering he's the most famous of the lot. Fiver on him please.
Absolutely dreadful list of nominees.
no one I want to root for at all.
That Roller Trio album does sound good though
going off the taster that's on their soundcloud. Really wanna hear the whole thing but can't find it anywhere...
Other than that the only album I've enjoyed is Django Django and even then there have been lots of albums that have overshadowed it this year.
Very pleased for Field Music
will give 'em a much-needed boost just being in the nominations, I think.
first record I fucking adore on the shortlist in years
The Twilight Sad, Kate Bush, Tindersticks are off...
...shame on you, Mercury Prize!
is there any money to be had for being a nominee?
or is it just the main booty? 20k last time I remember but that might have been a while ago.
Still, publicity innit
The opposite
You have to pay to enter.
shit
well, there's always the inevitable sales boost to try and offset that, even if you don't win.
I'm happy for Field Music and I love Hawley
but no sure Sky's Edge deserved a nod. The rest is of the stuff is the usual boring forgettable stuff. It's another tragedy that Tindersticks aren't in there and I wanted to see Kate Bush and Saint Etienne. Man that Maccabees record is over rated.
I'm sure the panel have committed yet more atrocious omissions
But nothing will beat last year's Smother rejection. I mean, the fucking Maccabees got on this year.
Yeah they missed Smother and don't forget Hidden
from These New Puritans didn't make it either. I don't get the Django Django acclaim. It's all stuff I feel like i've heard before done better.
This is the year when they will finally give it to either
the jazz choice or something not mainstream, but also not indie.
Put your money on either Michael Kiwanuka, Lianne La Havas or Roller Trio.
Turns out Roller Trio kick some real arses...
http://soundcloud.com/rollertrio
PLEASE NOT KIWANUKA
and the nation collectively fell asleep and never ever woke up again. so. fucking. boring. even more boring than django titting django.
Roller Trio, Sam Lee or Jessie Ware pls
such a boring list
might quit music and go work in a bank
I reckon BBC might scrape it
It's so fucking head and shoulders better than anything else they've done. It's a band at their apex. If they don't get it now, that might be it.
That's my thinking.
Bombay Bicycle Club aren't nominated
(unless you mean someone else I have forgotten, in which case sorry)
...
Put your morgage, or contents of piggy bank on Kiwanuka.
List is a bit dull
Didn't I read once that you had to be put forward and have a nomination consideration paid for?
Is that correct?
That may account for the non appearence of FotL, Tindersticks and Twilight Sad as none of the those labels would have money to burn.
Hence we have
Infectious
"Because Music" (= Warners)
Memphis Industries (not too aware of who what their connections are)
Island
Mute/ Parlophone
Fiction / Polydor
Polydor
Warners
Island
679 / Atlantic
? F-Ire
? Nest Collective
So apart from those last two pretty much all the other concerns on the list have big lable backing...
That is interesting
They really should change it so that it is cheaper to apply. Does anyone know how much it costs?
memphis are an independent
The entry fee is £200 though
I'm sure even most indies can stretch to that.
Been checking out some of the acts
Just got through the Jessie Ware album. It wasn't easy. By track 3 I was nodding off. Bit of a slog to get through. The Kate Bush is so much more brave, moving and substantial then this.
the jessie ware album is considerably more 2012 than the kate bush one, though
Plumb should win it
absolutely should win it. That, Grizzly Bear's new one and EL-P's Cancer for Cure are my favourite records this year.
oh and Blues Funeral
One guy (sartana I think)
mentioned R.I.P. by Actress. One Guy! He is from the U.K isn't he (or at at least as much as Anthony Hegarty is)? It is more of a shock that the DiS community has forgotten this album than it not being nominated. Have people forgotten the buzz around it (not just the 10/10 review)? Or have they gone off it big time?
