do they play songs that people know, or is it still improvisation/songs that will be released in about 4 years?
and a couple of MPP songs. Think everything else was new.
Most of the set comprised of MPP but it'd been out for a while. Enough to be familiar.
Got one new one which was later on Fall Be Kind EP which hadn't been released at the time and Fireworks off Strawberry Jam.
They were fucking brilliant too. Can't wait till November!
I went ballistic when they played Fireworks
because they were all over 2 years since MPP came out. I would say that they will probably mostly play Centipede Hz songs in November.
i am slightly apprehensive, iv heard mixed reports about them live
Of absolute brilliance surrounded by a fair amount of tedium.
might smoke a wee j before hand
differetn, i first saw them in liverpool magnet bar supporting four tet about ten years back give or take a couple of years , and it was just 2 of them, with acoustic guitars and one big drum linked to a loop pedal. i saw them a couple of years later supporting múm again in liverpool, this was all 4 of them plus various members of múm (this was the best ive seen them).
i saw them in manchester academy 3 too a couple of years further down the line and it was just the full band this time 4 of them all rocking out on a traditional band set up guitar bass drums etc , the last couple of times ive seen them more recently in last few years theyve been different set up wise relying heavily on samples etc but still brilliant. so to answer your question just go and watch them and see what happens , itll prob be good whatever they play
We Tigers crammed into a minute is pretty great though.
though I saw a video of them doing Who Could Win A Rabbit around that time and it was kind of awful.
was almost all new stuff (tracks i presume are gonna be on centipede hz and honeycomb/gotham). only old tracks were did you see the words, we tigers, brother sport and summertime clothes. there's some great recordings of the sets from last year- best bootleg in terms of quality i've found is the atp one (14-5-2011) and there's their whole set from pitchfork music festival on youtube which is cool to see with lights/stage set up etc.
this upcoming tour i'd expect to be predominantly centipede hz with a handful of older tracks thrown in.
I was at that gig and have been looking for a recording for ages!
Was it any good?
I take it they didn't play any new music, cos it's been total buzz killington.
It was absolutely amazing.
I saw them at Primavera in 2011 and it made me never want to listen to music ever again. Just...awful
Fuck knows why, I only *quite like* MPP and have found everything else pretty much unlistenable. It's going to be my least enjoyable gig of all time I think.
Honestly, every casual/non Animal Collective fan I know who has seen them in their current live set up hasn't enjoyed it at all.
Hopefully she can find someone else to go along with though
I really like their shows personally, but it is slightly underwhelming for a band of their 'stature'.
talk about it Mojo
Basically, they always did that accept around MMP, when they actually played songs people know. The tour last year playing mainly new stuff is just their MO as far as i can see.
Saw them in Eastbourne the day after their ATP and it was all either improv or new recordings getting an airing. Played Did You See The Words, Brother Sport, Summertime Clothes and Who Could Win A Rabbit. Thought they were shit live and wouldn't be rushing to see them again any time soon.
enjoyed them when i saw them on the MPP tours ( Koko, and Brixton) but i can imagine it would be underwhelming if they were'nt playing well known songs.
Thought they were average at best then. Maybe just not what I wanna get out of a live band. As said upthread, a few moments of euphoria, a lot of tedium.
