Do you have certain bands who you buy everything by despite not really liking much of what they've done for years?

vamos [Edit] [Delete] 85 replies 10:51, 7 August '12

I do this with Liars.

I liked the debut, adored the next 2 records and have carried on buying everything since. Liars, deluxe version of Scissorworld, tracked down all the myspace demos and now have the latest.

But I don't think I've really liked any of their material overly since Drums not Dead. There are a couple of belters on the most recent but yeah... the thing is, I KNOW how much I love them live and will always adore They were wrong... and DND so continue buying all their output anyhow, hoping they can rekindle the fire. I'm not even sure that they haven't, maybe more that for whatever reason I've moved on and miss their old sheer oddness.

Do you do this with anyone?

  • Anything Greg Dulli does

Love them live, but only really go for about 2 or 3 songs per album. It's an Afghan Whigs hang-up. Just to hear his voice is kind of a reward for me.

  • No.

I'm extremely disloyal, musically. I will drop a band like a hot potato if I feel they've gone wack. Artists need to go hard to get my attention; it's not like I'm short of things to listen to.

  • Kid606 for me

Though the latest LSDMTB303 EP was an unexpected surprise, really liked it. The Songs About Fucking Steve Albini album should have been brilliant (loved the concept of a 'beatless' release from him but it was largely forgettable). Trouble is Kill Sound/Who Still Kill Sound were so so good that it's difficult to top. He also didn't do a record with his live band set-up which was disappointing as the live footage on youtube looked insane.

have all the early (slightly) onscure vinyl EPs and stuff from the beginning right up to Seachange. Same with Flaming Lips up to Soft Bulletin. But finally got over them both and don't care about EITHER of them any more. Phew.

  • Nick Cave

Hasn't released anything decent since 2001 (2004 if you count bits of Abbatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus) but I stick with him based on previous greatness.

Depeche Mode - they've been piss-poor since Alan Wilder left but they were my first ever big fave band back in the 80s so I stick with 'em.

Barrel of a Gun is awesome. Playing the Angel is piss-poor in my opinion but not quite as utterly awful as Exciter & SOTU. But it's been a loooooooooong time since they released a truly great album.

  • British Sea Power

Their debut was one of the first albums I bought, and I loved it. It has a certain charm about it... a sort of English quality about it. Open Season just wasn't as good, despite the odd good song. Then the next two albums just sounded like self-parody. Horrible lyrics and vocals. Man of Aran was different because it was a soundtrack, but it still wasn't great. I think I've pretty much given up now.

Absolutely love everything from the first album up to (and including) the Runners Four. Carried on buying everything since then, finding myself less enthusiastic with each new release. "Deerhoof Vs Evil" was the first album with songs that I massively disliked. A week ago I checked out the jukebox preview thing of the new LP. Don't think I'll be able to follow them on this latest adventure. It just doesn't sound interesting/exciting to me anymore.

  • Oasis/Noel Gallagher (though not Beady Eye).

They were the first band I ever got in to and the band that got me into music. For that I kind of feel like I 'owe them/him' so still buy all the albums even though it's been diminishing returns since Be Here Now/Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.

Mind you, the High Flying Birds album is actually alright in places. Get the feeling that Noel was saving a few tracks that he could have put on Oasis's later albums, but saved them for his solo album instead.

I know there's a lot of love for OOS and Absolution and the general feeling of being let down with each subsequent release, which suggests people are still listening. There's no way I'm paying money for their next album now though, no fucking way

    • I gave up after Pushing the Senses

Fuck awful album, absolute fucking dross. Which is a shame, because I still genuinely like every album previous, loved them once, but Pushing the Senses REALLY tainted my opinion of Feeder and now I find it difficult to listen to a single track. Weird. Although I listened to Yesterday Went Too Soon a couple of weeks ago and that's still pretty good

      andyvine @film_maker | 9 Aug '12, 17:15 | X
      • The most recent one I'd say is a little bit of a return to form.

There are a few tracks which have melodies up there with the best of their earlier stuff, and it seems a lot like they've just made a good Feeder album, rather than having a specific agenda like they have with the last few albums.

Surprised no one's mentioned Biffy Clyro. Their first three records, particularly Vertigo of Bliss and Infinity Land, are fantastic. Couldn't get past some of the stuff on Puzzle (though there's still some good stuff) and haven't gone back, sadly. Boss band live, though.

    • The thing is with Only Revolutions

Is the production mostly. And the fact that it had Many Of Horror on it. Shock Shock is a genuinely great song, and though a lot of the album is lowest common denominator pop rock and not what they were previously known for, they were good at writing those big pop hooks.

Can't remember the last album that I enjoyed more than a couple of tracks from (certainly nothing this century) yet still I buy them. Not all the solo jazzwank and SYR stuff, as that would be mental, but all the real Sonic Youth albums.

Thing is, any time I've seen them play live in the last ten years the new stuff has seemed much more alive and interesting in concert. I suppose that's why I kept buying, knowing there's something there that's not being captured on the recordings and hoping it would.
