DiS's Favourite Albums
Same rules as the film one. Plus:
Nominating more than 10 albums because you *simply couldn't* trim it down so-here-is-a-bunch-more-at-the-end-LOVE-ME? That's a paddlin'
Mentioning this on the music board that results in any of those music board-only hobgoblins trekking over here to lie about some Zappa album being their favourite? That's a paddlin'
Nominating Paddling Out? Oh, you better believe that's a paddlin'

Lester Bangs would love your list
You're really going to do this?
God bless you.
I should probably make this clear that
I will not under any circumstances be totalling up this thread. It must be the Olympic fever but I just really really wanted to fire the starting gun.
The end of this post is the last time I'll have anything to do with this thread.
Farewell & godspeed
There goes a good man people.
A shining example for the work shy.
Name your first born after him, and next time you're atop a mountain shout his name to the heavens.
We raise a toast to you Lucien you lazy, lazy shit.

Looking forward to seeing how this goes
Bit needy.
Dear fucking god
Are there any rules on compilations, live albums, etc?
If there are then I want to know them.
I think I'd have to say The Best of The Beatles
Who knows?
Whoever is going to do the spreadsheet can take the steering wheel from now on
Well until I know the answer
I don't know if I can put Aerosmith's classic live album A Little South of Sanity in, so can someone show some initiative please?
not even worth voting
with the exception of Ys nowt i like would have a chance of getting in there. MAYBE the gap by joan of arc but i doubt it
thinly veiled
you would have heard of it post

Fuck it, I'll grab the proverbial bull by its proverbial horns and do the spreadsheet for this
Rules as above, with live albums allowed, but no compilations (unless it contains NO previously released material). No EPs or anything, and don't be a dick about this.
List them in order, 1-10, and points will be awarded as 10 for your number 1, down to 1 for number 10.
Voting closes at noon GMT on Monday, 6th August.

it's ok I'll take over the lesson, you go sit down.
Pathetic.

no Alan Lomax Field Recordings?
Who is he when he's at home?
Alan Lomax
same as when he's in a field, recording.
the guy that Moby made an album of TV commercials sampling his field recordings
the field recordings were like a library of folk music from around the world. He is particularly known for having collected a lot of black blues singers at a time when very few of them made it to vinyl at all
The prison songs album is particularly worth checking out.
chaingang blues etc. PROPER EMOTIONS.
I think this might be to hard.
Yeah, I regretted taking this on pretty much instantly.
There's no shame in cowardly quitting this thread without seeing it through

Not sure to what extent this is my favourites versus tactically what I'd vaguely want DiS to 'represent'

4. M83 - Saturdays=Youth
5. dEUS - The Ideal Crash
6. Bjork - Vespertine

needs more Burial, Daft Punk, Justice, Luke Abbott, Aphex, Wild Beasts, Bloc Party, etc...and kinda avoided albums pre-DiS (2000), and think maybe there should be a whole other thread for pre-2000 but only because I'm anal. Anyone remember the top 66 of the first six years of DiS list that we did? http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/1254995-dis-is-6--our-66-the-top-six
pre-DiS list would probably be something like...

Cheers! - it's the only hip-hop I really feel compelled to listen to now
I guess because of the guitars. But they had everything, the image (hair/skate dude stuff), the creativity, the conscience, the tunes and the guitars. They were awesome. I miss them more than MBV to be honest. They had so much scope to develop their sound further :(
I got really excited when I saw a song on the Asher Roth album featured them
before realising it was a different New Kingdom. Meaning they really have been forgotten if someone else is using the name!

well i believe i put 10 in numbers
... and the bunch at the bottom is really doing you harm, right? But thank you for delineateing the boundaries of my freedom. Now excuse me, while I think of something more important, like itching my scrotum
See, his basic civil rights attaining to freedom have been violated
I hope you're all happy. Shameful.
someone help me oppress this guy ^
Don't worry
I'm giving his album choices minus points. I'm also planning on delineating the boundaries of his freedom once I know what that means.
oh and if the guy that had made the 'rules' had bothered to use actual proper English
I might have understood what the hell he was on about.
"That's a paddlin'" - who on earth would actually choose to write in the style that a Limp Bizkit wannabe would speak in?
:D
Lucien fail english ? That's unpossible !

CAN WE NOTINATE ANY 10 ALBUMS
I need closure on this question before I post. TREAT ME LIKE A MORON AND SPOON FEED ME THE FACTS.
An answer would be spiffing
Is this a piss take?
Nominate your top 10 albums, no compilations.

Now this has moved to the music board
There hasn't been that much out-obscuring each other. If the usernames were all taken away, I wouldn't be able to tell a "hobgoblin" post from another.
The "honourable mentions" stuff though...Stop that.
There wasn't a single aspect of this thread that was meant to be serious.
You're exaggerating
A lot of people who were looking at this thread just to be a bit of fun have posted semi-serious top tens nonetheless
You're either pulling the most deadpan comedy moment ever here
or you need to check behind you because clearly there's a lot of stuff lying against the wall that went over your head.
It wouldn't be the first time
Still, you're being a bit "shush, the adults are talking now" about this
Lies
This was supposed to be the direct equivalent of NoahVale's highly successful film one - I just wasn't the man to see it through. So like an origami boat I placed it on the water and let it sail away to bring joy to others.

wait — are people taking this seriously now?
Were people not taking this seriously?
I feel ashamed of myself...
Submissions appear to run the gamut
from earnestly sincere to bizarro wackdom.
Er, I don't quite understand this term 'social'
Is this is where you talk to 'people' instead of tap keys?
Looks serious to me. I'm never sure what the balance of 'serious/taking the piss' posts is on these sorts of threads. You always get at least a proportion of people who reckon Radiohead are the be all and end all.
Well, us social boarders are quite a lot cooler than you used-sock-sniffing,
social inepts over on Music.
Part of being a 'cool dude' is that you don't ever take stuff 100% seriously, and instead are all like: 'whatever Trevor'.
I'd read your reply but I'm too busy buffing my stylus.
why not?
it'll be a really funny top 10
Some people have done it album title - band name
some people have done it band name - album title.
Going to have to start again.

You bastard!
hey it says Melvins & Cows & Karp
I'm lumping them in! Which is pretty bad but...
tough call, not including anything from the last 3-4 years as it would be a very different list
1 to 10.

GOOD CALL
yeah great album
biggest album of my youth when i was (just a boy, probably dressed in corduroy).
Seamonsters is fucking great
I've had that record twice in my life, and both times it's been stolen from me. I really should buy it again and would, if I weren't so broke right now. Still have the singles from this era on vinyl at home, so maybe I'll dust them off today. Some sweet b-sides on these: Crawl, the cover of She's My Best Friend, Dan Dare, Fleshworld... They were arguably at the top of their game around this time, and it's criminal that this record doesn't get included in more of these kinds of lists. And no, I'm not David Gedge.
you know
they are touring it in full later this year, right?
jimitheexploder asked me to pass his list on

10. The Life of Mince Today - Alien Noize [Hyperdub]

I think that Klass by Wibble? was just a 12 inch single (promo only)
....so is illegible.
Get him to check.
Er, it's clearly Wibble? by Klass
Not sure what you're talking about pal
Yeah yeah. Same thing.
:')
Thanx I was busy yesterday so nice one for passing it on.

I was torn between Richard Skelton and The Books - Lost & Safe and Kid A and SAW or even Villalobos - Alcachofa maybe even Raw Power and Relationship of Command but made up some shit instead I'm affraid, sorry about that.
raw power
iggy mix or other?
so much love for los angeles. think it may have been you that recommended it back in the day
I dunno what mix I have really
maybe its Iggy's remaster not sure I've heard both I just love the riffs. LA is so good, can't wait for his new one this year. Cosmogramma was good n'all but not even close to LA for me I just connected to that one right away and haven't shaken it since. Its kinda like why I can't see why anyone would choose Songs for the Deaf over Rated R, I just can't see why anyone would choose Cosmo over LA.

You're doing it all wrong!
You do the nominating first, just 10 unranked albums you feel should be included in the master list, and that's it. If someone else has already nominated your favorite album (or 7, or 10 or FIFTY!) in the tread, then you get to nom your next 10 favorite albums. So the list is nothing but nominations, done in public, you see.
That list would then be compiled and dispersed to all those who nominated.
THEN, from that list of nominated albums everyone fills out a ballot of their (ranked) top XXXX (I suggest 20-25) albums, and that list is sent privately to the poll creator to compile (each rank is assigned a numerical value).
Then a new thread is started for the rundown, top 50-100 depending on participation.
If you would rather see it done this way then I would be willing to do it. I have an excel spreadsheet I used for the Kanye poll:
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4334223
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4339845
But hey, if you like how it is then w/e.
err wut?
just ignore it I guess
haha i never realised there was this schism between the music and social board for how things like this are done
Personally I'm a very much 'do what I'm asked' man when it comes to these things. I'm sure if we did it another way I'd come out with very different answers.
We haven't done many of these countdowns really,
but this way I've proposed is super easy and fun.
Tell me more about this social board you speak of.
that's smart
i was thinking this way of doing it is silly. I don't like Lambent Material 1/10th as much as And the glass-handed kites. But whatever.
I sort of feel like i've got totally lucien'd by even posting in this thread.
its not a joke
stop trying to cover your ass
yeah, that's what I was going to do
Saints be praised!!
It's your job now, God speed man. I'm never coming back to this thread.
Oh, and by the way everyone
I got the first 44 people's votes counted, at which stage 318 separate albums had been nominated. Most of them looked fucking dreadful and I will never attempt to listen to them.
No Prince album had been nominated, and 3 (THREE) albums by The National were nominated. I'm not kidding on when I say that you lot are a despicable group of people.
At that stage, OK Computer was winning
so, you know, well done Q Magazine readers.
(I lied when I said I wouldn't be back in this thread).
Off the top of my head. (scratches head)

You are a twat
a propos of what?
la la la on holiday not getting into this laaaaaaaaaaaa
Luckily there are only 10 albums in the world which I enjoy
Otherwise, like you, I wouldn't have been able to contain my sheer love of music within the clearly delineated limit of ten records.
boy howdy am I glad you got on your high-horse about this of all things
p.s. my 10 is as clearly delineated as yours, there was no rule against an additional 'highly commended' list
after all, this thread is a nice way to get a handle on each other's tastes, and more albums = a bigger handle. wish everyone gave their next 10 tbh
Quite clearly the first rule in the OP. Better get ready for that paddlin'.
Probably should have included a safety wink...
Wantonly missed from my bubbling under list:
Soft Machine - Third (which wasn't far off my all-time #10 slot tbh) and SFA - Rings Around The World

Smog - Dongs of Sevotion
Interesting fact. None of my 'album of the year' from the past 15 years are in my top 10 albums.
limiting this to 10 albums is a really bad idea
because the top 10 of most countdowns of this variety are pretty predictable. you should make it a minimum of a 100 (seriously) and then run down the top 1000 albums. also encourage people to write a little blurb about each album (or as many as they want to write about) then when you post the results you can include the quotes from forum members along with stats about how many people voted for it and how many total points it received.
i realise that's about 400x more work but it's what makes this actually interesting. DiS really hasn't fully adapted to the art of list making, and i dunno why considering the number of weak lemon drink consumers we have here.
I think it's really cute how people are still replying seriously
Well done music board hobgoblins. We'll show those social board cunts.
it's been made an official poll by sean
on DiS' facebook and twitter feeds and so on so it's not really that strange.

That's mainly just goign on the albums that have racked up the most plays from me, and the albums I can always go back to and will probably never get sick of. If you asked me to make another list in a couple of months time, chances are something would be different. But meh, that's a petty definitive personal list at least.
Oh and just for the sake of the thread...
My undisputed favurite album of all time is Two Dancers. I haven't put the others in any kind of order really, but that's definitely number one.
I'd forgotten about this
Is anyone actually counting them up or are people just screaming into a cave at this point?
If nothing else it got a mysterious ^this from the ghost of bamos so was totally worth it
I'm putting all the answers into a spreadsheet and then Meths will
be crunching those numbers. I'll give you a shout when it's ready to unveil.
someone escort this gentleman out of here
People were finally starting to take this seriously - we don't need this kind of sideshow. Not when the eyes of DiS are on us wondering if we can host a thread of such complexity
I started a spreadsheet
but took the parachute offered by theShipment further up the thread. So far the high point of the thread has been you getting called a "Limp Bizkit wannabe".
There was no parachute
Continue the spreadsheet
No chance.
I stopped after 44 votes, will happily send it on to anyone who wants to continue.
