...when the new Animal Collective album will be out EVERY damn music site will be flooded with reviews/opinion/etc like it would be the return of The Beatles?
I remember when their previous was released in 2009 almost EVERYONE mentioned this band THE WHOLE DAMN YEAR! I simply couldn't escape without seeing AC somewhere. Worse than Lady Gaga. It made me sick of simply reading their name.
Oh, and by the way: their music = pretentious nonsense bullshit.

With MPP there was a real crescendo up to that moment, this sense of culmination of not just Animal Collective as a group but of them as the foremost representative of that sort of post-millenial scattered influences style, all amplified by the early release of `Brothersport` and 'My Girls` which were both brilliant tunes but also suggestive of an accessibility and crossover success.
They'll get coverage this time, but nothing so dominating - as the fashion has changed since MPP, I suspect they'll seem ever so slightly passe in late 2012 - I say this without having heard a single note of the album. I imagine the album will be really good, judging by their record, but just that the `moment` isn't with them so much anymore.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing
They've got quite a hardcore fanbase, and it's growing all the time. They seem to attract the kind of fans Radiohead have - people who actually a) buy the records b) buy the tickets c) look forward to everything they put out. They might lose a lot of the fairweather 'My Girls' fans but I don't think they're over by a long shot. I can see them maturing even more into a really fascinating weird pop band as they get older.
Their music really isn't pretentious, i don't know how anyone can say that
they're one of the least pretentious, openly emotional musical acts that there is around right now. If we use google definitions of prententious, i.e 'Attempting to impress by affecting greater importancetalent, culture, etc than is actually possesed' then that doesn't apply to animal collective in the slightest.

This doesn't fully relate to the thread title, but whatever...
I've never really liked Animal Collective. Their music has always struck me as boring and irritating rather than catchy and whimsical. And that's probably one of the more annoying things about AC. Their fans will swear that their music is actually relatively poppy, even though it's clearly not.
BUT my biggest pet peeve with their music is their lyrics. I swear, they're the most smug and self-important lyrics I've heard in my entire life. Someone screaming "I DON'T MEAN TO SEEM LIKE I CARE ABOUT MATERIAL THINGS, LIKE OUR SOCIAL STATS" really fucking irks me. It's one thing to care about family and value them above everything else in life, but to scream an ironically superficial lie is another thing. Because face it, human beings are naturally a little materialistic. And it's okay to try to shut those feelings out, but singing about it in such a direct and preachy manner really just highlights potential insecurities and a desire to appeal to easily impressionable people who don't quite understand how the world and humanity works yet.
And I do understand that AC are one of thousands of bands and artists who have criticized materialism, but at least those other bands and artists tend to do it in a less irritating and seemingly care-free manner. Like Radiohead does it a manner so overtly pretentious, that it's almost humorous to me. And bands like Green Day strike me as so naive, that I don't really mind if they do it either.
And it's not just those lyrics that relate to social issues that annoy me. The lyrics that are included in the majority of their work- ones about having fun in the summer- also bother me. I understand they might be enjoying themselves, but they don't need to hammer it into my head until I become nauseous. It's just annoying. They almost remind of those people whose life goal is to assure everyone that they're a happy person and then encourage other people to be "happier". Just shut the fuck up.
So that's what I think about Animal Collective. Not only do their soundscapes grate, but their approach to making music and writing lyrics is attempting to be so unpretentious that the finished product ultimately amounts to something much more superficial and pretentious than anything else being released today.
