Gwen Stefani
New video for Adorn just came out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dM5QYdTo08
One of the best trax this year.
Pretty cool this.
So for those that don't know
he released an album last year called All I Want is You featuring the singles:
All I Want Is You ft J COle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7PVhQPaFNY
Sure Thing (top 10 track for me last year)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4GJVOMjCC4
Quickie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt3QLI3XYtk
Girls Like You
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtqmE-tVibE
The album had some extremely strong moments.
Since then he has released three three-song EP's
titled Art Dealer Chic 1-3 which can all get got here: http://www.artdealerchic.com
Adorn (linked above) is on the first standout, then this:
Arch N Point
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_F1p0BJWVI
Love these EPs
This is where I jumped on really, yet to hear the debut.
Good shout on the thread, needs more exposure for sure.
The only song I don't like is Broads
on the 2nd one.
He might need to either come out or get a Pitchfork endorsement
before he gets much love on this forum ;)
He'll get the media hype for sure.
But he has kind of denied being gay so far.
Next up he is releasing his album in a weird
way with 2 Eps coming first. The first 3 tracks can be streamed here:
http://www.spin.com/articles/stream-miguels-three-song-kaleidoscope-dream-water-preview
'Use Me' has been streamed by me like 30+ times in the last couple days. It's HUGE.
Yeah, been loving this guy.
Think you linked to Adorn earlier this year, and I got the Eps after that. The album last year is decent, but 'Sure Thing' is the only one that comes close to matching 'Adorn'- that is an absolute jam.
Just listening to the three new tracks for the first time now. Good call on 'Use Me'- superb.
He's starting to feature in on a lot of other songs now, so looks like he's getting a push. He and Ocean could be taking the hook-singer mantle from Nate Dogg. The Swizz Beats produced 'Summer on Smash' off of Nas' 'Life Is Good', which is pretty bad to be honest, and Fat Joe's 'Pride N Joy', which has a ridiculous line-up including Miguel, Kanye West, Jadakiss, Mos Def and Busta (although half of them are barely involved) :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PHT1BwAtgM
Also
Wale's Lotus Flower Bomb which is ok:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKvhkcJDbzY
While I don't think a Miguel hook could have saved Summer on Smash
Why they have Swizz Beats on the hook and Miguel doing a verse I'll never understand.
I've been enjoying the Art Dealer Chic EPs anyway. Adorn is fantastic, obviously.
Dont sleep on Quickie.
Honestly his debut really grew on me. I liked it at first and the strong singles kept me coming back but the other tracks have really started to shine.
interesting fusion of styles
i like what i've heard, and from those new ones 'use me' is obviously fantastic.
However good he is, people need to stop it with these one forename performing names
Madonna and Beyonce are distinctive enough to get away with it, but Adele? Miguel? Bit unimaginitive and nondescript isn't it? I AM THE ULTIMATE COLIN
i think it's just his name, and adele is just her name
it's probably not as big a statement as you're imagining
I don't think they do see it as a big statement, I just think it's pretty rude
If I was called Adele or Miguel, I'd be like, what the fuck? Someone's got the monopoly on my name now?
Agree w Miguel.
Adele is unique enough, at least over here in the US it's not a popular name.
lol I kinda wish Frank Ocean
would have just gone w 'Frank' now.
Hey, quit hating on my style okay
Nah you're fine
I think of you as 'kyle underscore'
Haha good
Maybe in the future when popstars start run of names, they'll resort to punctuation tricks too.
Frank_0cean2
I'll leave you guys to change this sentence so it makes sense.
everybody knows you're the ultimate kyle
Here's an interview which kind of gives
you a look at what he's like personality wise and also as a performer:

His live performance from last night

Just noticed this
London show in September http://venues.meanfiddler.com/jazz-cafe/full-listings/featured-gigs/7738
Pretty expensive though!
Just spotted this when looking at Inspectah Deck tickets
Would love to go to this but not for £30!
Ouch.

Do You...
!!!
Liking this
A pal told me about this guy
s'good
when is the album due?
both those EPs are v. strong
Dont think there is a set date yet
Have heard that the promos are out for reviews though.
"the scene".
;-D
Ha, yaaah.
Full album stream:

Awesome
That's tomorrow's work listening sorted then.
Listening now
Not heard anything at all before, enjoying this a lot so far though, really textured production (I know what I mean by that but can't articulate it properly)
Annoying website to stream from though.
Really? NPR does a pretty good job, I think.
It's probably just me but I had to setup a playlist to play the whole thing
And the window hasn't updated to show which track is currently playing.
Pretty stupid to gripe about that when it's a free album stream mind you.
Doesn't disappoint.
I wasn't sure he'd be able to top Adorn but Do You... might well be the best track I've heard all year.
Also loving Can't Wait, such a catchy chorus, and Kaleidoscope Dream samples one of my all time favourite songs- Labi Siffre's 'I Got The...' Will listen again tomorrow- there is a hell of a lot to digest on this album. The production is dense and layered, and new guitar melodies and hooks jump out on each play through.
This is really good.
More thoughts later as I've only listened once, but my first impression is that it's really nicely varied and consistent. Plenty of standout moments too - I'm a big fan of the title track and 'Do You'.
Kind of weird for me as Ive already heard and am heartily
familiar with like half of these tracks. Still great overall but takes the excitement out of it a bit. Ready for the release so I can purchase it.
The only song I dont have time for is pu$$y is mine, seems pointless and out of place to me.
Use Me is so good, hope it hits the radio. Adorn has been steadily climbing the charts.
dunno, it seems to go off a bit after the first 6 tracks
might just be because those were the EP tracks, we'll see.
the deluxe edition of this has two pretty good bonus tracks
'gravity' and '...all'
which is a shame because apart from 'where's the fun in forever' 7 to 11 is pretty weak.
WHUUUUT
Arch n Point is in that run! One of his best songs.
Its all a bit Oli Murs for me
...
Video for Do You...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-BW2gKnVz8&feature=player_embedded
I think when it kicks in 1.20 into this song is my favourite musical moment of 2012.
Love the ascending bass line.
Dont get the reference but... gtfo, jimi!
Maybe Skrillex will do a remix of one of these songs that you can enjoy.
I'm listening to Kaleidoscope Dream right now.
It's brilliant. Does anybody have recommendations of similar stuff?
One of my favourite albums from this year...
BJ The Chicago Kid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkruN0m8Ins - Lady Lady
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvHkIOh4Vt8 - Fly Girl Get'em
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywZ8Se2aiH0 - Good Luv'n
If you have Spotify then his album is here:http://open.spotify.com/album/2wFvP1NMsXK3g2gtzkIJXM
Make sure you check out Other Side (which isn't on Youtube.)
Other than that, then Frank Ocean springs to mind, although you may have already heard that given the hype. I'd say Pilot Jones is the most similar track to Miguel's stuff.
If you haven't listened to D'Angelo before then now is the perfect time too. 'Voodoo' is an absolute masterpiece. It's a lot denser than Miguel- the songs are generally 6 minutes long- but it's perfectly produced, and new instrumental flushes jump out each time. D'Angelo's voice is included in that- it's pretty much the greatest thing ever.
Anyway, there's already been a love-in for that album over here:
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4289217#r6872856
Fucked that spotify link up.... my bad.
http://open.spotify.com/album/2wFvP1NMsXK3g2gtzkIJXM
And now, await theShipment.
Forgot about that BJ The Chicago Kid album
Just put it on now. Is he singing Tom's Diner at the beginning?!
Ha, yeah, It would appear so!
He samples/ sings loads of stuff on this album. I love the word-for-word Marvin Gaye lines in Good Luv'n. Takes some skill to do that and not come across as tacky.
Cheers for these!
I'm very familiar with D'Angelo, Frank Ocean and The-Dream out of the previously mentioned, but I'm looking to delve a bit deeper. I'm downloading the mix right now and I'll be checking out Pilot Jones and BJ The Chicago Kid shortly!
Other full albums I would swoop up:
Dwele 'Some Kinda...'
Lloyd 'King Of Hearts' (deluxe edition)
Ryan Leslie s/t
Maxwell 'Blacksummers'night'
Electrik Red 'How to Be a Lady'
and this new(isn) Kevin Cossum mixtape is really pretty good overall:
http://www.datpiff.com/Kevin-Cossom-Hook-Vs-Bridge-2-mixtape.332767.html
The-Dream
Download this mix I made.
http://www.mediafire.com/?hj864ee8ts15qgb
http://i47.tinypic.com/2gsk5qe.jpg
I love this whole album.
Its connecting with me more than the Frank Ocean album did/has, for sure. Agree w CA that the deluxe edition is the way to go.
Good review imo
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17125-kaleidoscope-dream/
--Emerging unscathed from middling mainstream performance, Kaleidoscope Dream sounds, at its utmost, natural and easy, an artist set free to do what he wants and proving himself every bit the unique voice his debut seemed to deny. It's respectful of tradition, quietly ambitious, and deeply personal--
Such a disappointing record.
'Adorn' is such a strong start, was thinking it was gonna be, idk, "off the hook/chart" or whatever you middle class white boys who pretend to like urban music say, but the rest of the album's just charty, Radio 1 fodder.
Yup.
I don't hate it, but it's hardly the game-changer I was kinda hoping for.
Will be giving it another listen, though.
Don't think it was ever lauded as a game changer.
Off the chain ffs
Like you've listened to it!
I think it's pretty good. Nothing exceptional... But there should be new The-Dream & Maxwell albums soon enough, so I ain't gonna cry if it's not a classic.
It's one of 600 albums i'll be listening to over the next two months for my end of year list.
My pleasure.
Is this album better than the 2 EP?
*3 EP
Yes.
But about half the tracks are pulled from the 3 EPs so... for the rockist in me it just feels like a full package.
Miguel AND Frank Ocean aren't really doing anything new.
It's still r&b with the same set of ingredients as r&b of the past so if you never liked it before well then this probably wont change your mind.
Miguel does use a little more electric guitar (and reverb) than others though, so I guess he has that.
I've grown to like the album on its 2nd and 3rd plays
He's got the tunes on lock
but he most certainly does not have a proper haircut.
Used to look fresh,
http://sophisticatedignorance.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/miguel.jpg
then just let the pomp get outta control.

Live on Letterman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=symVGoyGVhc
Kind of regretting not paying £30 to see him the other day now...
Love it.
He's doing a London show
http://www.stargreen.com/tickets/miguel_hmv-forum_17-jan-2013_34324
Bit much innit? Hopefully I manage to attend anyway.
Cheaper than the last show
But a much bigger venue. And the same week as Kendrick. Hmm...
reeeeeeeeemix
https://soundcloud.com/dj-dyn-o-might/adorn-go-go-remix
I went to see him last night in Manchester
and he was fantastic.
Didn't even mind him taking his shirt off.
Proper emotions.
<3 his guitarist
he was good (exceptional)
and fair play to him for giving it plenty on stage, but I wanted to punch him a bit. He looked like a cross between Fabregas and Aston from JLS.
He only seemed to have "hyped up West Coast party monster coming to fuck your girlfriend" in his repertoire.
I bet him and Miguel are virgins.
Oh yeah the guitarist is a goof,
I just love his energy. So over the top.
