Pink Floyd
After going through The Beatles studio albums in chronological order my next project will be Pink Floyd. It seems the logical band to recapture next as I know little about the Rolling Stones (and have little of their material). I enjoyed The Beatles write-ups and aim to make this similar reading. Stay tuned or feel free to switch off if not interested.

Never liked this band. Not one little bit.
i get...
...tired and bloated just seeing their name.
Love Pink Floyd
You are in for a treat when you hit Animals, such a fantastic record.
Animals and Meddle are their best two albums.
I totally agree with this
Wish you were here
Is the first track by any band that i remember truly listening to, and caring about. - so good.
you'll get a much better picture of the Floyd
if you review all the bootlegs too :)
although they did do some awesome stuff up untill end of '69
I easily prefer the Floyd material when Syd was present..
Still enjoy some of the latter albums as well.
Without a doubt, Meddle for example..
One of these Days is awesome.
Meddle, Animals and Wish You Were Here > anything with Syd on it.
Pink Floyd
Saw them in 69 and they were an awesome beast then with light show, strobe and countless effects. Talk about stoned immaculate. Loved them until WYWH and then they hit the Wall lol.
WYWH is definitely the beginning of the end for these guys
Not a bad album as such, but the bloat is setting in, and those synths sound horrible. Animals is a turgid Waters wankfest. The Wall is hilariously bad. Never heard anything past that point.
Don't forget Dark Side of the Moon though. Its status as dad rock FM fodder shouldn't be allowed to obscure the fact that it's a masterpiece.
It's the beginning of the end only insofar as it's their zenith
I'd dispute that there's a single note of bloat on there. Oh, and those synths are *gorgeous*.
Animals is a step down and they definitely overextend themselves there, but they're still near the top of their game. After that is when I start to lose interest.
One of those bands that I'll never stop loving
Careful with that axe Eugene ... Woof, what a song.
I'm one of the few'- scuse the pun - that love the final cut.
Like him or loath him, Roger Waters was essential to Floyd. Everything following his departure is as weak as child's piss, imo.
It's great....
my favourite Floyd album, but I'm sure I'm in a minority
their best 2 albums are Ummagumma Live and A Saucerful Of Secrets
cheeeeeeeers
Haha to the first one
Come on man, you don't ALWAYS have to be leftfield
A Saucerful Of Secrets...
... I wrote the bands 2nd album up last night and feel it is one of my better reflective reviews. I'm working on More (the album) now.

Saucerful is my favorite PF album
Jugland Blues just gets me everytime <3
this is a nice write-up
for what I would call PF's only underrated album
the title-track is immense
Ummagumma...
... great sleeve and good intentions aside. It's a bit rubbish?
http://midnightpunk.wordpress.com/2012/07/18/pink-floyd-ummagumma/
you're supposed to ignore the studio half :(
Guilty secret: I actually rather enjoyed The Narrow Way when I was 18, wonder if it holds up
Its certainly...
... the best of the studio recordings. Weird to think they played in Erdington for some of the live material / recordings.
Yeah I was amazed by the Erdington thing
I lived there for several years while at Uni and a few years later found out that it used to be home to a legendary music venue, and that part of Ummagumma live had been recorded there. Based on Erdington now it's hard to imagine!!
my dad was there
As he often frequented Mothers....there should be a bbc4 stylee documentary about that place because sounds like it was ace there.
o and a couple of quibbles re: the live disc
You claim Astronomy Domine is a straight-up run-through. Why's it twice as long then?
But more heinously, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun......you say 'see previous review' - and yes, the SOS version doesn't come close to exploding. But the live one DOES
you are correct...
.. i was running through it really. Poor excuse and you are spot on.
It should do - pt 3 features one of Gilmour's loveliest melodies/vocals
Confession: I really like 'The Division Bell'
I like High Hopes
Much of the rest of it doesn't do a lot for me.
me too
i love it in parts, but am accepting it for what it is - overblown pompus and all
Atom Heart Mother...
... ups the ante from Ummagumma. Having never heard it in full today I've listened to it three times now ans it is much better than the band themselves suggest.

Fat Old Sun is a big favourite
have you heard the versions from the Paris John Peel sessions in '70 & '71??
awesome....
My first memory of listening to music is hearing Keep Talking
It was in my dad's old Golf, whilst parked in an IKEA car park. Random story.
Anyway, haven't heard The Division Bell for years. Can barely remember anything else on it. Should I revisit it at some point?
The Dark Side Of The Moon...
... I had the cheek to review it and actually enjoyed revisiting it. It is a hard album to throw any criticism at...

no
wheres More?
It's there...
Where you may expect it.
blame the V
odka.
The Body?
Obscured by Clouds?
'tis there too
I'm now listening to Animals for the first time
I've just given that a listen too (Animals)
and I really did not like it. I'd go as far to say as chronologically it's the worst album so far (not post Animals). Anyway. I've posted the preceding album on the blog if anyone's interested...

How come whenever I see Pink Floyd discussed, there are barely any mentions of Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall?
Are folk just trying to be indie by pretending they don't exist? Do die-hard fans tend to not like or disregard them? Or have they just been discussed at length too many times before?
The Dark Side Of The Moon...
... is most probably their best album. I do really rate The Wall too even if it makes you want to slap Waters around the chops at least once. I really wish they had split after The Wall. The acrimony was apparent even on that album yet alone The Final Cut. As for the post Waters stuff, may aswell have been a Dire Straits tribute act or something. They are a great band but their discography is ruined after The Wall. The Beatles never made that mistake.
The Wall

Damn. I wish they'd quit after this album. It'd almost be like The Beatles signing off at the end of the 60's?
