Trouble at t'Mill
Apparently some unpleasantness went down at the Brixton Windmill last night: http://silentpunk.tumblr.com/post/26551193275/i-know-it-should-be-the-least-of-my-concerns
Also read some tweets (including one from Darren Hayman) suggesting this isn't the first time this has happened. Anyone know anything more about this? I've always quite liked the Windmill even though it's in the arse-end of nowhere, but this all seems a bit off.

including people seemingly thinking someone bringing a bottle of vodka in to a venue is justification for alleged racism and assault.
http://anorakforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5937
Whilst obviously it isn't
I do enjoy the bare faced flippancy the alleged victims have about it
I'm not happy about that thread title, son
Joking aside
I'm not going to make a judgement on this until I know a lot more about it, obviously
Hahahahahahaha, i'll let Rupert Grint decide:
PLEASE BOYCOTT THE WINDMILL IN BRIXTON. IF YOU PLAY THERE YOU AREN’T A REAL PUNK YOU’RE REWARDING RACIST SEXIST THUGS.
PUNK AS FUCK
I've been trying to get people to boycott this places for ages.
Not for reasons of alleged racism and violence though but more because it is so far away from where I live in North London.
She shouldn't
have brought her own booze into the venue.
Are you listening Mick_Squalor?
Never been to the windmill before but I've just bought tickets to the Alcoop alldayer this saturday
I thought it was supposed to be a nice pub? What are peoples experiences of it/the landlord?
I wasn't there last night.
But I have never seen any trouble in all the years I've been going there.
^Never been there with DanielKelly
I have no idea who he is.
Should I?
looks a bit like JohnM
he had his face bitten right off by a dog at the windmill. i don't hink it was roof dog, roof dog would have eaten him whole
I guess he's easy to spot then..
Roof Dog pissed off the roof onto some unsuspecting drinkers the last time I was there. Fun times...
most people won't have met the landlord
generally on nights there it's the promoter or bar staff who'll you'll see around.
This trouble makes me sad because it's genuinely one of the best venues I've been to both as an attender and promoter. Hopefully we'll hear more about what happened soon.
Yeah, I've heard good things and am looking forward to checking it out
It's a shame that stuff like this seems to happen and bands are boycotting it (according to Darren Hayman's twitter anyway)
You like the landlord/venue? You're definitely not punk.
Been a bunch of times
Worst trouble I've seen was the landlord refusing to let my mate have a beefburger from the (free) BBQ when he already had a vegeburger.
One time I went there for a gig that got cancelled and the landlord bought us drinks to compensate.
There's a better link about last night here:
http://animatedboyoftheshelf.tumblr.com/post/26552017233/my-attempted-non-bias-commentary-of-the-events-at
Darren Hayman has made comments about an incident involving Allo Darlin'. A while back Elizabeth from AD mentioned on Twitter she had been banned from the Windmill. I asked her why and she said something about 'telling everyone that they should go see another band' which seems a bit odd...
Windmill is a great small venue
and Tim (guy with glasses and long hair), the owner/promoter is a very decent guy. We're into double figures for shows we've played there and, zonino aside, it has always been a decent experience. sounds like the band/singer in question were acting like bell ends, brought in own booze blatantly, wouldn't leave when told, trouble started. There's no security at the Windmill and there really shouldn't need to be.
Tim isn't the owner he just books the bands
I don't think it is Tim that is being talked about here.
The landlord is a big old fashioned Irishman in his 60s
I have promoted many shows at his venue and despite initially appearing aloof and belligerent, he is actually a really nice guy provided you're a nice guy to him. Sounds here like he has acted in a bit of a rage at someone who was knowingly breaking rules and quite patently leading him a merry dance and humiliating him in front of his peers in his own premesis. From the account posted in this thread, it does appear to be an unfortunate situation, but remember - you are only hearing one side of the story here.
One important thing needs to be said - the landlord actually has nothing to do with the musical side of the venue at all. The bands are booked by another guy who puts a tremendous amount of work into supporting new music in London and beyond. The Windmill has the fairest payment policy for bands that I have encountered in London having played in well over 50 venues. And as a promoter who uses the venue to put shows on, it is one of very few venues that doesn't charge any upfront fees, and just takes a small cut of the door takings.
This is all I have to say. I won't be boycotting The Windmill.
:(
There's been a similar occurrence at The Hydrant in Brighton
no physical assault as such but the manager of the pub (who also lived there) was sacked for being gay. They've kicked her out of the flat too. They're also refusing to give equipment back to the sound guys who walked out in protest.

How is that in any way similar?
owner assaults someone, disgruntled punters call for a boycott
they're hardly worlds apart, Mr Pedant.
Except you said in your original post there was no physical assault...?
there wasn't
it was verbal.
excuse me?
:D
I see, I see.... well here's another similar story
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4748292.stm
:'D
Kristi Strumpet Edwards said
great stuff.
Right, except that's not really a similar incident at all, is it.
Venue: We're cancelling all shows and not having live music here anymore
Bands: FUCK YOU MAN! We're gonna boycott you and not play any of you no longer existing shows in protest
it's not solely a venue
it's a pub first and foremost. It's also an extremely busy pub during Pride so a boycott would be effective.
being busy (and that's debatable) on one weekend of the year
is not a solid business-model.
Shit pub, shit beer, and without gigs, it's empty.
It's shit anyway, but now it will be empty AND shit.
It'll be empty/under new management within 6 months.
only been there once to play
I really liked it. I'm not from Brighton so I don't really know it's popularity gigs aside. I'm not convinced a function room for parties will prove successful...
Tim from the Windmill's posted a statement
http://www.facebook.com/windmillbrixton/posts/10150984400643991
What's your point?
Yeah, I know.
The thing is, Seamus is claiming he didn't actually say it. Good selective quoting though.
it's totally out of character for seamus to say anything like that
i don't believe it for a fucking second.
stupid internet cunts will re-blog anything though.
unless it never happened
which is what all the witnesses are saying so far.
new JAG method
be gobby to a landlord, get in a scrap, write a blogpost crying about the TERRIFYING experience, damage a venues reputation, but don't press charges.
It's a bit worrying but I know and like Tim and his statements enough for me not to boycott it.
The bottom line is we're never going to know what happened for sure and I'm not going to assume anyone's innocent but I'm also not going to start boycotting what I've always experienced as a nice, friendly venue based on hearsay alone.
The band seem to be known for attracting trouble anyway given previous posts on their Myspace.
There's a lot of rumours and contradictory accounts surrounding the incident and a lot of people seem to be over exaggerating what took place to suit their own ends. If Nadia wants to press charges then that's her prerogative - if she doesn't it would suggest that perhaps the aggression from Seamus, physically and verbally, wasn't of a level initially indicated on Twitter. Those calling for some boycott based on hearsay and a couple of blogs need to get their heads straight quite frankly.
Nadia sounds like a bit of a belm, to be fair.
I wasn't there so will never know what happened
But what has been bothering me all day is their accusation that the police....IN BRIXTON...stood idly there will some bloke blasts out racial abuse
And of course by the other logic their followers are throwing around because I have a query about their story I'm a woman hater
That's the bit that sounds odd to me too.
...
(And the whole thing you pointed out on Twitter of acting like drinking your own vodka on stage isn't a problem.)
i wonder if the same amount of understanding would be given
if this was the owner of a barfly venue, for example.
Probably not but that doesn't mean that people are wrong.
I mean it's true that, if less people on here promoted at the venue and knew people involved, they'd immediately think "racist Landlord, must boycott venue" but they'd be believing the rumour without facts.
I mean reading through the less biased accounts that have been given to either side it seems very possible that the Landlord didn't handle the situation brilliantly and might have been a bit more physical in removing her than was necessary (although to what extent is hard to tell from the various statements) but, at the same time, there's not really much evidence to back up the claim he used racist abuse and it's probably a good thing that people aren't condemning him without evidence - even if that's what probably would happen if people were less involved. But I'd say the latter, rather than the former, is the wrong approach to take.
If you've had the misfortune of posting on DiS for a few years
you'll probably know that my one and only experience with the landlord at the Windmill was unpleasant- he was a drunken, abusive bastard to me to the extent that his wife (I presume) was pretty distraught by his behaviour. And having spent large parts of the my 26 years in the company of 60+ year old Irish men, I don't find that account of events particularly hard to believe.
Judge not and all that though.
are you a choirboy?
And a demon in the sack!
:D
good combo!
They're from Hayes?!
Must be tough for them standing out in a scene consisting entirely of nu metal and pop punk covers bands
