Almost sold out - go, go, go!
on Wednesday, anyone see it at Unsound? It sounds...interesting.
First half was a nice idea but didn't really tickle my pickle.
Second half was enthralling. Good old Aphex. New album pls.
and choir and the second half was split between a brief piano track and oscillating pendulums which were doing something very similar to this.
i'm sure it was an interesting show nonetheless
but otherwise it was entirely new/improvised material.
track was brand new according to the programme notes. Liked the way the creak of the piano physically moving added to the piece. The Remote Orchestra piece was well done, kudos to the orchestra for being able to pull it off as must be tremendously exhausting although it did feel at points like D.James was just messing around with an entire concert hall at his disposal.
I thought it was very good in all though, better conceptually than musically but it was certainly unique. Very glad I went, although reading some of the comments on various sites I'm not quite sure what some attendees were expecting.
regarding the first half I think I enjoyed the concept more than the execution but there were some interesting moments.
Loved the second half though, particularly his take on Steve Reich's pendulum music.
I also loved the second half, but the first really dragged. A really interesting and quite a funny idea, but at the end of the day it just sounded bad and I got pretty bored.
And I kind of hate this attitude with Aphex Twin of people thinking you're some kind of philistine for wanting to hear some of his music that you're familiar with. Why is that so frowned upon? I've been a fan for many years, and i'm not saying "It was crap! He didn't even do Windowlicker!!" but he seems to be able to get away with performing some right old bollocks.
and then moaning that you didn't get an hour of gabba/Windowlicker etc. If you wanted that then you should have gone to Bangface...
I was aware of what was going to happen on Wednesday, and anyone who moaned about what was performed is an idiot. Totally agree.
I kind of meant Aphex shows generally. I've seen him before and people will appear to lap it up regardless of what he does. He headlined some Warp night at Ocean years ago and basically just did a 90s jungle set. I love jungle, but I can hear anyone do that and pay less than £25 for the experience. Why the reluctance to perform some of your own material? It'd be amazing in a setting like the Barbican.
And yes, I suppose I could go to Bangface, but I'm 35 and I can't be arsed to go all the way to Cornwall. Plus my wife probably wouldn't let me.
