The most interesting bands from a specific city #2 - MONTREAL
Really liked the Seattle thread http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4349434 so doing a follow-up.
I'm just writing a guide to the city of Montreal, after going there a few weeks ago for Mutek (incredible sound and lights! Thoroughly recommend it). Started making a playlist, but it's very much the bigger and better known names at the minute. You knowledge is very much needed...

The Stills
Arcade Fire
Think about life
Suprised their first album wasn't huge, 2nd albums rubbish though
somehow forgot Wolf Parade / Sunset Rubdown / Handsome Furs
Remedied that mishap now.
Do I dare add some A-trak?
Grimes?
She got going in Montreal, though she is from Vancouver. I'd go with Circumambient as a track.
of course
added her cousin Doldrums too.
and CFCF (whose new EP is gorgeous)
D'eon
On Hippos in Tanks. A little like a trippier How to Dress Well or Sung Tongs era Animal Collective got soulful. Album stream in here: http://drownedinsound.com/news/4145077-on-the-dis-stereo--june-2012
TIM HECKER
Not sure how I forgot him.
The Adam Brown
fantastic original list
Suuns !
saw them again last night, great band. My favorite from the current Montreal scene, and i live here.
Spencer Krug's Moonface project is also pretty great
The Besnard Lakes are based here as well and are pretty pivotal in the local scene as Jace Lasek runs Breakglass Studios where a lot of the bands record (Wolf Parade, Braids, Patrick Watson, Stars, etc)
Also recommend Valleys and No Joy, more in the drony/shoegaze vain :

TOPS are a great new Montreal band on Arbutus. This song is beautiful:

Blue Hawaii, which share the same vocalist as Braids :

Purity Ring are alsp based here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgKk8Eqyzkk
Mozart's sister seem to also be picking up some steam these days but not really my cup of tea
http://mozartssister.bandcamp.com/
Oh, and Spotify is not available in Canada so please consider alternative ways of creatinf playlists
and Colin Stetson of course
not sure how he got left out until now
i thought he was from Montreal
but a couple of bios i found didn't mention it?
maybe only Montreal based ?
not sure about his life story but I know he is/was living in Montreal
didnt realise TOPS were from Montreal. Posted that album on the DiS stereo piece with D'eon. Seem to be accidently Montreal-centric.
I'll do a YouTube and RDIO playlist when I put the piece up.
Also forgot all the Alden Penner (Unicorns) related projects
Clues - Alden left the band in 2010, they seemed to be going on without him but have not heard anything for a while
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qHAxQMF_d4
Hidden Words - His project based on the holy book of the Bahaii. Some great tracks but the mysticism in the lyrics can be a bit too much for non-bahaii
http://thehiddenwords.bandcamp.com/
then there's his solo work such as the "Odes to the House" EP he released last year
aldenpenner.bandcamp.com/album/odes-to-the-house
Each Other are from Montreal
think some of them are from Halifax originally but they're now a Montreal band
http://eachotherssongs.bandcamp.com/
also, they are really good
(kinda deerhoofy guitars and cool harmonies and weird song structures and time signatures and stuff)
I can probably add a few bands to this list.
Parlovr - Hell, Heaven http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVuvXCbvQ5M
Plants and Animals - Lola Who? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_7bJ2G8hmY
No Joy - You Girls Smoke Cigarettes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AivFulF-NPk
Karkwa - Marie Tu Pleures http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKfa69AU_x0
All the above songs are on Spotify. Can probably add more bands/songs later.
yeah, No Joy are really good
didn't realise they were from Montreal
