Your favourite Depeche Mode song
Every so often I return to these guys. I've never been able to sit through and entire album but they really have written some great songs.
My favourite is Everything Counts. I like the video too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_rD1LeECDE

Depeche Mode
Really hard to tell
I think the compilation The Singles 86>98 include some of the best Depeche Mode songs.
Favorite Depeche Mode song? Probably "World in My Eyes", "Strangelove", "It's No Good" or "Halo".
My favourite of their's is probably...
...Never Let Me Down Again. Features one of the best rhyming couplets:
Promises me I'm as safe as houses.
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers
Not a fan but...
... Enjoy The Silence is a great song.
I really like Barrel of a Gun
i agree
when it kicks in it's just brilliant :D
Get The Balance Right!
Everything Counts
Enjoy The Silence
Very difficult to choose between them.
offtopic
Are you by chance the same friday55 from last.fm?
yes
hoping my password is safe!
Great.
Psssst! I'm on your friends list.
you must be alin1 then!
It's the Garbage connection in your posts and last.fm profile...
hope you've been enjoying the Garbage- and Curve-related topics in the last couple of days. I still think SVIIB's Ghostory is more-than-influenced by early Curve. It's close to mimicry. Still v good though.
But Ghostory' sound is lighter than Curve's early albums/EPs. While all Curve' songs are usually quite heavy, SVIIB' new songs are even relaxing.
To be honest it doesn't bother me at all if SVIIB were inspired by Curve, MBV, Slowdive etc. At least they were inspired by good bands.
I'll let it go now...
and play some DM for the first time in months.
Got to be Enjoy The Silence for me too
Their last album was brilliant though, much better than the (slightly disappointing) couple that preceded it.
I think that Playing the Angel was better than Sounds of the Universe.
I thought Dave's songs on Playing The Angel
let things down a bit.
PTA is about a billion times better than SotU
Stripped
or Blasphemous Rumours
Shake the Disease
Violator's their best album
Both are great.
Black Celebration, Music For the Masses, Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion & Ultra, all of them are awesome on their own. Best DM albums for sure.
Enjoy the Silence
Then Everything Counts for me.
There is an acoustic version of Personal Jesus too that's very, very good...
Yeah - sure it's the 12" - or digipak CD version!
If people are enjoying Depeche Mode then they have to listen some stuff by And One
'Wounds'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoP78csbiPk
'No Song For You' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K28ZBahh-WM
'Enjoy The Unknown' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sqfjcdm5gs
And if that doesn't convince you then listen to this track which doesn't even attempt to hide the fact that it's ripped off the melody from 'Just Can't Get Enough' - still bloody good stuff though.
'Dancing In The Factory'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdlJMsy2f7o&feature=relmfu
1) Here is the house
2) Blue Dress
3) But Not Tonight
man i love depeche mode
'But Not Tonight' should have been on 'Black Celebration'.
But some editions include this song as bonus track. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Celebration
Haha.
There's an interview on one of the deluxe editions where the band express the same feelings about It's Called A Heart. Made me smile because it is really quite terrible. Really hard to choose a favourite but 'Home' is up there since the first time I saw them play it live. I'd not heard it before and Martin nailed it. Quite a feat in a set with 20 odd great songs.
Walking In My Shoes
followed swiftly by World in My Eyes.
I tend to dig the stuff where Alan Wilder's sonic dickery comes through more.
Definitely.
Liquid in particular is an amazing album. Undefinable; weird, chilling, erotic. It even has Diamanda Galás on it. All wrapped up in Wilder's amazing sonic atmospheres.
Bloodline is the best
I love that album. It features collaborations with Toni Halliday (Curve), Moby and Douglas McCarthy (Nitzer Ebb).
The best Recoil song is clearly "Edge to Life" (feat. Toni Halliday): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50AYo8fMsks
It can't be better than that!
Personal Jesus
I Feel You
A Pain That I'm Used To
People Are People
Policy of Truth
In Your Room
Barrel of a Gun
Enjoy the Silence
Leave in Silence
Master & Servant
the grabbing haaaands, grab all they can
very fun to sing along to.
Enjoy the silence is their best song though
Hard to pick just one.
Right now it would probably be 'Dangerous'. So good I wish they would have included it on Violator.
Some good B-sides in their earlier years too.
Fools, In Your Memory, Fly on the Windscreen, Remotivate Me, Ice Machine, Christmas Island
Fly On The Windscreen
I'm glad they promoted this b-side as album track after some reworking.
Enjoy the Silence
for me, is the best song ever written... It's perfection
Right, following the top fives above
Shake The Disease
Stripped
Never Let Me Down
World In My Eyes
Higher Love
and to be honest, Songs of Faith & Devotion is so strong I could have picked nearly any of them (weirdly although I love Violator - first album I ever bought - I can't pick a standout as easily as on some of their other albums)...
*Never Let Me Down Again, sorry...
wow
it's nice to see some depeche mode love on the boards :D
i've become a fan over the last year or so, mainly due to the 101 cd, which i love. the versions of everything counts and never let me down on there are both amazing
favourite song is probably stripped, tho i've got a penchant for 'nothing' as well :D
That live version of "Never Let Me Down Again" from 101...
...it's the best ever! I like how they inserted a part from NLMDA (Aggro Mix) somewhere in the middle of the song.
have always adored "New Life"
just always sounds bouncy and upbeat. Great single.
Favourite track overall by the band would be "Waiting for the Night" off Violator...it's just beautiful.
Useless
closely followed by Enjoy the Silence
The Kruder & Dorfmeister remix of Useless is also great.
I like the single version of Useless more than album version.
I'm a fan but not an obsessive one
To get an idea of just how much some people love this band, see the Jeremy Deller film "Our Hobby Is Depeche Mode". It was showing for free (on a loop) at the Southbank Centre when I was there in April, don't know if it still is.
It's No Good
At their dark, moody swaggering best
really surprised (/not surprised) by the lack of love for Personal Jesus
Dreaming of Me & The Sun and the Rainfall
I kind of bailed out when they all started wearing leather keks and moved from synth pop to panel beating
top 5 today
here is the house
world in my eyes
blasphemous rumours
it's no good
everything counts
fuck....so many good songs....
I was in Tallinn over the weekend, and went to a bar in town
They had posters of Depeche Mode all over the walls, played nothing but Depeche Mode songs, and looped a Depeche Mode live DVD on a tv screen. The bar was called... `Depeche Mode`.
That's all I've got.
personal jesus is of course fantastic, but so many people like this so its not actually as personal as all that
a run of three of their early singles was marvellous
see you
leave in silence
get the balance right
these were all beautiful downers and I think depeche mode does this sort of thing better than anyone else
recently more recently Halo
I actually particularly like the goldfrapp/depeche mode mixup
and enjoy the silence
and get the balance right (although its getting a bit raucous....i liked the quite power of the three previous singles)
sorry I meant everything counts. not get the balance right (when I mentioned the raucousness creeping in)
"I actually particularly like the goldfrapp/depeche mode mixup"
You meant Halo (Goldfrapp remix)? If yes, then indeed Alison Goldfrapp added her voice to that amazing song.
I Feel You
Over sixty posts in and...
No-one has said "Behind the Wheel".
That is shocking.
