'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' is one of those classic albums I just don't get at all.
To my modern, backwards ears, it just sounds like a bad Decemberists rip-off. I just don't think it's very good, and I like pretty much every other associated record from the genre.

people mainly like the album because of it's hype and legacy
It really isn't better than most things. What puts it ahead of, say, the Decemberists? I really really don't understand the supposed greatness of the record - and yes I do own a physical copy, thank you. It's an overrated album that has been blown into cult-status or meme-dom for some reason. No it is not that good, so why don't you go and make a mash up album using Of Montreal's The Bedroom Drama, ffs.
Or maybe, you just don't like it, and others (like myself) think it's incredible
