Haim
Anyone listened to this industry/meeja hyped band yet?
The EP is right here

The way the melodies go remind me of Stevie Nicks but probably what's a little more appealing to me is that it reminds of Gayngs, particularly the first track, quite intimate and sexy and very 80s sounding. The second track is good too but I don't like the third, the weakest of the three.
Anyway wha do you all think? "It's shit mate", "Meh" or "It's alrght" probably.

anyone else surprised to find that its
pronounced 'Hyem' and not 'Hame'?
No.
It's Hebrew. Cheers.
Fancy not speaking Hebrew!
Aye, I presumed it was a reference to Corey Haim.
As did I!
"Haim" means "life," however. So, neat?
6/10
Kinda surprised they won Sound of 2013.
Kinda reminds of Stevie Nicks and more recent stuff like Twin Sister.
kinda.
Hasn't it all been done before ?
...better
I'm hearing some Wild Beasts in this
which is no bad thing. I don't think it's great in general, but I'm more than happy for stuff like this to become the standard chart music.
I agree with BarriElCastell. There's nothing new about them.
I like their songs
but I don't see them as something to get particularly excited about, no matter how infectious 'Don't Save Me' is. I enjoy their songs but get very hard to get excited about them.
they sound like Wilson Phillips singing Pat Benatar songs
that sounds amazing
keep confusing them with Raime
Lol!
er how?
Listening for the first time
It's very 80s isn't it? Not bad though.
I think the percussion gets in the way of the music
There's something quite good there though...but I do prefer AlunaGeorge and Chvrches
^... I do prefer Eaux, Ms Mr and WIFE

overhyped
nothing great about them, but they'll go far.
.

Actually I think that single is very good
so there
I preferred their earlier stuff
http://youtu.be/YQ0v6pBkmdc
hahahah I didn't believe it until I looked up their names!
amazing.
I think in all honesty I genuinely prefer this.
Incredible
I think this is better.
Atrocious bullshite.
Anyway Haim are good, I'd definitely like that stuff to be in the charts
it's better than Call Me Maybe.
ban request
okay, okay
it's better than we are never ever getting back together.
strike 2
yeah but getting norovirus is better than call me maybe.
This thread = hilarious
WHY CAN'T THEY BE TOTALLY ORIGINAL LIKE ALL THE BANDS I LIKE ARE :'(
But yeah I'd probably stick that single comfortably in my top five of 2012
I don't think people dislike them because they're unoriginal.
I think people dislike them because they're absolute cack.
Go Slow is pretty good
The other two are OK, agree with the comment about the percussion overpowering the tracks.
Don't give a shit about teen band before
Or any motives of fame or whatever the fuck.
I listen. I like. A lot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcYMGs-6Vqg
agreed
not the best band name.
On the other hband, me've listened to ep 7 times....
eight times motherfucker! 8.5/10
tis brill
:')
I usualy find with these kind of things, you know a hip young buzz band comes along and you want to give it a listen, because you never know... Well I personaly find an easy short cut that works almost without fail. Scroll down to see if oceanRain likes it and invert the score he gives, then hey presto almost always spot on. My system still works here, one of the most trusted sorces on DiS. 1.5/10
And also
funny
Dreadful.
Bracing myself for the T'Pau revival, it's only a matter of time.
don't you dare bloody compare them to t'pau
Not really comparing them to T'Pau as such
Just pondering which godawful seam of overproduced, soulless 80s shite will be mined next. Laughing my FAO watching the hipsters fawn over rubbish like this.
Don't really think it's hipsters going for this.
It's the industry wanting a big mainstream hit, isn't it?
Absolutely this^
I went to the industry showcase for them back in the summer and it was like a who's who of music press, A&R and various industry bigwigs. (and then there was little old me, having managed to sneak in.) The poublic are going ot be told in no uncertain terms that this band and the Next Big THing, and the public will probably go along with it (with or without some support fromthe 'hipsters'. Are 'hipsters' even a *thing* any more?)
*are* the next Big THing
sounds like Shania Twain
Haim? Hait more like.
^ He's on form this morning.
That Don't Save Me song is great
in a kind of made-in-a-lab way. Got bored of it almost instantly but it's good nonetheless. Their other songs... not so good?
ok so the new song
.. any takers?
http://stereogum.com/1258291/haim-falling/mp3s/
This is the first song that actually sounds like the same band everyone else is talking about in this thread
It's pretty poor. Certainly the weakest thing they've done so far.
It's also basically indistinguishable from the stuff on Twin Shadow's critically acclaimed album from last year. I guess the difference is he's an indie man and they're pop girls.
its just sort of nothing music
6/10 stuff that could drift anonymously behind an advert
Do people really think they're going to be the next big thing?
Something about them doesn't seem very sustainable. Mainly the fact that even with all the press hype no-one seems to think they're any better than *alright*.
have they been on Later... yet?
they'd be a terrific filler act on Later
Love the idea of "terrific filler"
if that's even possible.
no
they're going to be big. young ones have already claimed them as "Their" band.
it's kind of a perfect formula (although the songwriting is a bit weak)
synth pop for the none 'hands in the air' types, slighltly less mined 80's nostalgia reference points (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXSmfdE4A60), sunny positive feminine breathy angle for the arty/introspective but non-angsty/self-destructive
entirely non-offensive
massive label push
all that
But don't things stand or fall on the strength of the songwriting?
I don't doubt they'll chalk up a few Top 10 singles and get interviewed in every weekend magazine, I'm just struggling to see them as anything more than a flash in the pan (I realise that they're not necessarily supposed to be anything more than that, but I always assume the music biz will only pump this much money and time into something if they think it's going to pay off long-term).
nah
things stand or fall on exposure and critical mass
there's an inordinate amount of people who love music but don't actively seek it out so if you can get get something on their radar that they aren't offended by then it goes in their shopping cart
the first Florence LP sold 1.5 million copies in the UK alone
I think Haim are likely to do a similar thing but probably on a globally broader scale seeing as how they're Californian
but I could be wrong I guess
so like the XX
but for less needy people?
haha
if you like
L'chaim
most of what you all are saying makes me wanna run in the other direction. Shania Twain? Stevie Nicks? Wilson Philips? Pat Benetar? They better start looking for work today.
