I haven't heard too many good things tbh but I don't care, Im a full-bore Kozelek stan so I slurp it all up happily.
but i'm not overwhelmed so far, I enjoyed "admiral fell promises" but kinda wish he'd intersperse the classical guitar stuff with more full band stuff
And listened to it on the bus for the first time this morning. Initially seemed pretty good, then the spanish guitar got a bit tiresome so I switched after about 9 tracks. One song just seemed to be praising some dude who fixed his guitar, I suppose he has to get inspiration from somewhere to chuck out so many records every year. I am worried about Kozelek, I think his best is behind him for sure.
I loved April, and that was only a few years ago.
I reckon, I have been disappointed since.
A 17-song nylon-string comedy record about Northern California? By Mark Kozelek?
Now I'm an obsessive but it sounds awful. And the 3 tasters I've heard have been pretty bad.
I mean it was funny when he did the songs on tour last year from an amusing insight into touring kind of way but... I never expected him to make a whole ALBUM from them...
but I had to leave his last Union Chapel show. The nylon string guitar thing gets a mite tedious after 90 full minutes of it.
...I didn't like Admiral Fell Promises as a whole but there were several beautiful moments on it, leading me to think that with a bit of restraint the direction has legs. And the songs are better live too, I think...
We'll see, but I don't think this latest record is a good manifestation of what he's trying to do...
"alesund" in particular was brilliant
just wish he'd intersperse it with full band stuff like "the light", "salvador sanchez" etc too
