For me Trust, Shabazz Palaces and Amatorski I thought were brilliant and deserved a decent slot
Trippple Nippples stole the festival for me, I can't really explain the music it was sort of pop but totally around the bend with the band to back it up.... can see why venues in Japan are having none of it haha, everyone I went with are now fans. The is footage of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE_wS9T5uio here, I think this was after the stage invasion.
Speaking of stage invasions Doledrums had one a couple hours prior to this & were very very good fun live and even had a bit of a collaboration with 'Friends' who I saw at Horatios on the Thursday & thought they were a lot of fun as well but their set was cut short!
Niki & The Dove, never heard of this band before, mate told me to stay after Friends & I don't regret it for the incredibly tribal Kate Bush vibes and one hell of a drummer putting out some truly remarkable beats.
Princess Chelsea @ The Haunt & only The Haunt was brilliant but the other gig at the Psycosocial was probably one of the worst parts of the weekend due to bad sound. They had sound issues from the get go and uncooperative equipment and no staff to help them, I don't know where the sound man was but he seemed to fuck off for the entire gig before swooping down and correcting all the problems with 1 minute of the gig to spare.
I never really 'Got' Rolo Tomassi but after their show on Friday at The Haunt I'm now in love with them, such fantastic dynamics!
Cheaveu was a lot of fun but I think I saw them too early, they were like a hardcore band run threw a Fuck Buttons filter.
When The Saints Go Machine way exceeded expectations live, they had so much charisma and their songs sound positively massive live and it works incredibly well.
I saw over 30 bands, a clear record for me & most the shows were of a very high standard bar a few exceptions & I am still flabbergasted as to why FOE was only booked to pay Life which could hold 3 people, luckily I got in but from what I gather a lot of people were rejected at the door.
I really enjoyed Great Escape, the only real let downs being the 2nd Princess Chelsea gig & Errors who weren't as good as people hyped but that might also have to do with the fact they only had like 15 - 20 minutes to play due to scheduling issues.
I discovered a lot of stuff as well asides from Trippple Nippples, Doledrums and Niki & The Dove who I already mentioned La Femme, Oliver Tank, Me & The Bees, Tiny Ruins & Sykur were really good as well.
but clashed with Rich Aucoin who was like a bonkers cult leader and got the whole of Blind Tiger going mad and dancing like lunatics under a parachute at 3.00pm. Glad I missed her gig at Phychosocial now. Funny, the sound in there was great on Thursday night. Was going to see Errors but a friend had seen them recently and told me they were really boring live so went to the Arts and Crafts thing at Audio and was glad as Trust blew me away.
Weird, we ended up under a giant flag or whatever the fuck it was at Trippple Nippples, spose the best gigs need something to dance under! It's a good sign when a band steals drinks and spits burgers at it's audience yet still have the audience on side... I thought the floor was going to cave in at one point.
this was upstairs though not downstiars, I'm sure all the sound guys and stage hands were downstairs because I saw no one for the majority of the Princess Chelsea set, they handled it well but felt really bad as she looked visibly crushed that the set was going so badly. Was a shell of her confident smiling, multi tasking self that was on show at The Haunt, made worse by the fact most of the crowd left... it was uncomfortable to watch.
First time seeing them with their new line up. Veils were as great as expected.
it offered a lot of atmosphere the other stages couldn't possibly offer, it was not only up close and personal but also had good sound, was very impressed and hope it get's used more in the future.
The Social Club completely stole the whole of that day for me. Crocus sounded the most intense and they finally clicked live. The album is amazing.
Rolo Tomassi have always been exceptional, but I thought that with the new member reshuffle it doesn't sound quite as tight yet. Give them a few months and they'll be amazing.
If so were they good?
...but still had a great weekend.
Free entry to Cloud Nothings on Thursday as my mate was doing their sound. Much better than their London show on Wednesday. Great atmosphere, and I found myself humming their songs all weekend.
Was at the Pav Tav for the Alcopop / Big Scary Monsters free all dayer Saturday. Hadn't seen (universal megadudes all round) Johnny Foreigner / Stagecoach / My First Tooth for a while and they were all ace. Tall Ships impressed me as well, again, great atmosphere for their set.
Last night got handed a free wristband and saw DZ Deathrays who were brutal but somehow had some great pop hooks, really enjoyed them too. So yeah, didn't really see anything I didn't enjoy.
he was incredible.
Saw them at our courtyard gig and they were amazing. Other highlights were Toy, Black Belles, Django Django, Visions of Trees, Stealing Sheep and Boy Friend.
Also enjoyed Palma Violets at Komedia and was pleasantly surprised by Half Moon Run who were on just before Grimes
