The Cribs
I'm listening to the new album now on grooveshark. I'm quite enjoying it... I think. Everyone is asleep in my flat so it's playing through tinny laptop speakers.
I've never heard them before, known of them for years since they played that wanky NME show thing in 2008 though. Is this album a good starting place or should I go back to the 'start'. Always assumed they were like the whole 'Razorlight, Good Shoes, Pigeon Detectives' wank pile but this is pretty dirty and heavy.

The Cribs were unfairly lumped in with all that shit
Listen to the albums in order, I'd say. Nothing mind blowingly original, but they're good fun.
So I'm the only one who thinks they pretty much belong in that bracket then?
Interesting.
I think the only song of theirs I remember
is the one that sounds like a Les Savy Fav song. Clearly, I missed something.
But Les Savy Fav are good.
They don't sound like Les Savy Fav.
les savy fav = good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_VGcXmTDFo
the cribs = rubbish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCNTYi9fHuo&ob=av2e
thats the one Cribs song I like
yeah i've listened to it about 4 times so far and I'm really enjoying it
i didn't really dig the last one, but i love Mens Needs Womens Needs Whatever.
Not heard this one yet and the last one with Johnny Marr was just *sigh* boring
but yeah, Mens Needs Womens Needs Whatever is one of my favourite albums. It just is.
liking the album so far, bit over-long but much more exciting than the last one
Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever is still their best for me though, it's such a consistent set of songs and so chock-full of massive pop hooks.
The Cribs getting lumped in with the bands you mentioned
has to be filed alongside people confusing MBV for Bullet for My Valentine in the 'outrageously infuriating musical misconceptions' drawer. I blame the shit name.
New Fellas....
...is by far their finest hour. One of the best no nonsense sing/scream/shout-a-long albums ever. It's given me hours of pleasure. It's a brilliant record.
I bloody love The Cribs.
They wrote some of the best pop hooks of the last decade IMO.

Men's needs... > New Fellas > s/t > Ignore the Ignorant. Don't know about the new one yet, sounds good though.
Also this might be my favourite song ever

That's a godawful fan video.
I love the Cribs but every other album is my general rule with them...
First album is my fave as it was the introduction and is just filthy messy. I didn't really feel the New Fellas (but a lot like it), Mens Needs rocked like a bastard, Ignore.... is best ignored and then the current is another return to form.
The only negative comments I've seen about them is that they're formulaic. Yeah, they've got 'a sound' but if the formula is sloppy rock songs with squealing guitars, great melodies and sing a song lyrics then why mess with it. My favourite Cribs trait: highly passionate. My favourite Cribs attribute: ace live.
agree
I liked The Cribs, then I saw them live and now LOVE them.
I just think the Johnny Marr joining-then-leaving-the-band thing was hilarious
it's like when you have a friend who starts going out with a girl and for the first few weeks he won't shut up about her/how perfect she is/how he thinks he's in love, then they quietly split up a couple of months later and he completely plays it down; "nah i didn't really like her that much anyway". Brilliant.
Well that's one version....
How about Johnny Marr likes to think he's cool and relevant. Everyone loves The Smiths. You let a Smith join the band just cos. He helps you make your shitest album. You sack the fella and make a better record. The End.
did you not read the recent interview where they were moaning about everyone giving Marr the credit for the last album?
(but in a good way- the band obviously think it was a great record), Jarman (don't know/care which one) was whinging something along the lines of "everyone think that those songs were all down to Johnny, but he mainly just added guitar bits!! *stamps foot"
Ah right, I get you now. Great analogy by the way.
I think the early enthusiasm for him being involved was justified. I mean, imagine the possibilities of Cribs + Marr, well I certainly did. What we got in the end was Cribs tunes with some guitar and sound wankery shit on top so the sum total of Marr's contribution was him diluting the best things about The Cribs. I don't know whether Mr Jarman genuinely likes the last album and thinks there is credit to be attributed but the vast majority of the fans think differently and it's never been revealed whose decision it was for the parting company.
I think most people wouldn't think the songs were down to Johnny though, it jumps out the speakers which bits were The Cribs and which bits were Marr - basically, the unnecessary flourishes that weren't on previous Cribs records.
OH MY GOD THEY PLAYED BE SAFE TONIGHT IN BRISTOL
as you were.
Pretty sure they've played it at nearly every gig they've played since 2008...
well I haven't been at nearly every gig they've played since 2008...
cheers.
I can't decide whether Be Safe live is a good thing or not
Maybe i <3 it too much, it just feels weird
A projection of Lee Ranaldo's giant head is always a good thing.
When you put it like that
fight me you stroppy bastard
:D
a band who would probably have a special place in my heart if they tried to target the Anorak lurking, cardigan wearing, How Does It Feel To Be Loved? dwelling, foppy, hairclip virgins like myself instead of the i-love-gigs-at-academy-venue crowd
