Awful news :(
thought he was alright now
Licensed To Ill is going straight on, and fucking loud too. RIP Ad-Rock.
Fucksake. Yeah someone's not thinking straight...
I can't believe it man. Check Yr Head = Greatest Album of All time in my world. Gutted.
not that I'm making light of it obv.
Everyone loves The Beastie Boys. A huge loss.
Awful, awful news.
I almost bought Licensed To Ill today, really wish I had now.
Next time you think about buying an album- DO IT!
...had a big effect on young me when it came out. always my favorite BB record. RIP MCA.
Fucking cancer. Rubbish news. RIP.
This is tragic. Really tragic.
has gone. RIP MCA.
Like everyone else, I thought he had beaten cancer - weren't they strongly rumoured for Primavera this year?
Absolutely loved The Beastie Boys (especially 'Check Your Head') but wish I'd been to a few more of their concerts now.
GET OFF MY BACK
Was listening to them just a couple of days ago and was thinking how glad I was he had come through it.
I bought To The 5 Boroughs and Sound of Science when I was 15 and it changed my perspective on music. RIP MCA, this truly truly gutting.
Started with Paul's Boutique and To The 5 Boroughs though. What really amazes me is how much music I got into through what they sampled. Everything from Rocket From The Tombs to Curtis Mayfield... Such amazing tastes and such knowledge of how to use a sample properly.
along with Endtroducing and Since I Left You is probably the peak of sampling on records.
did the same for me. Taught me how to shake ass. After that, a world of music opened to me.
One of my best memories of them is how a friend thought the bit in Intergalactic where it goes: 'Another dimension, another dimension...' was actually: 'I'm havin' a nice shit, I'm havin' a nice shit...' Put it on - it's plausible...
Didn't know it would end up being a tribute. Their music always makes me happy, and I'm gutted to hear this.
Sabatoge is still the best video ever
The top rated comment on there at the moment is just depressingly symbolic of the general idiocy of youtube comments though.
I got more rhymes than I got grey hairs and that's a lot 'cause I got my share. Wooooo
think I'll listen to Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head tonight. Last year's record was pretty good as well.
Pre-warming my power amp...
The best tribute record to play tonight:
it's fucking great though...agreed
but it makes me stand to attention though
Made me shiver.
gonna be rinsing Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Paul's Boutique for some time.
R.I.P., MCA. :( x a million, truly one of the best people out of all the people to have lived. it feels incredibly jarring and unreal for someone so central to the alternative culture we all gravitated towards, that felt awesome and a ubiquitous as I was growing up, to pass away.
fuck, man. one of the Beastie Boys, gone way before his time.
Paul's Boutique now playing :(
Hello Nasty in the kitchen
I live in a 2 bed terrace
Check Your Head
Licensed to Ill
this is the correct order, no?
but the important thing is that Check Your Head and Paul's Boutique are two of the greatest albums ever made.
none of us knew this cat. we are not in mourning. come on man..
and this is one of them.
And they stand as the kings of references. Thanks for everything MCA.
This is really terrible news. Beyond the music he was a fantastic guy. 47 is no time to die. A real legend.
I hadn't realised that salivary gland cancer even existed until reading the news...sounds horrendous. What I loved about the Beastie Boys is that they played their own instruments and forged their musical career on their own terms instead of imploding after Licensed To Ill or vainly trying to stick to the same formula. R.I.P. Adam Yauch
The Beastie Boys cannot be credited enough for their input to alternative music. More than just a hip-hop fad the band mean a lot to a lot of people. I'm still taking this is and felt the need to write more. The blog link is not me driving traffic. I just had to express more http://midnightpunk.wordpress.com/2012/05/04/adam-yauch-1964-2012/
Just fired "Awesome I Fuckin' Shot That" on.
So glad I managed to see them live. Surely the most fun live band of all time?
RIP big man.
and utterly horrible
my absolute favourite. Ill as fuck. R.I.P big man
and there was a guy in a Beastie Boys shirt looking forlorn next to an impromptu RIP ADAM YAUCH scrawling on the pub blackboard. I gave him a hug.
Cancer is the worst. Total bullshit.
The Beastie Boys didn't just go to the five boroughs, they got out there everywhere in the world - one of the few bands that genuinely conquered every country imaginable, and without the need for cynical marketing, or really even any kind of marketing as we know it - their music didn't need it. Truly one of the most important bands in alternative musical history.
This cuts me up. 47. Ridiculous.
Lost both my parents & maternal grandparents to cancer. It's a cunt of a disease. My mum got the all clear twice but it still killed her in the end.
As for the Beasties, I dismissed them as a joke until I saw them at Reading in 92 & they absolutely blew me away, they were so fucking good. Been a big fan ever since. RIP MCA.
Father-in-law died at 59, now sister-in-law has it at 32. If you all want to do something with your grief, donate to a cancer charity today. Bastard bastard bastard disease.
RIP Adam Yauch. I WISH I had seen them live- so regretting this now. A true pioneer and all-round nice guy. I am gutted :(.
a tribute show on xfm right now.
as with others, the band that got me into hip-hop - one of the first bands I saw live as a teenager. Remember seeing So Whatcha Want on MTV when I was about 14 and thinking it was the best thing I'd ever heard (it was). Can't claim to have felt that *close* to them as a big(ish) American band, but everything they did was interesting and so much fun. And he (they) always just seemed such dudes.
Wanted to post this for those who may be interested.
I've booked a screening of 'AWESOME: I FUCKIN' SHOT THAT' at the Prince Charles Cinema in London, and we'll be donating the entire box-office takings to Cancer Research.

If I lived in London, I'd be all over this.
Hope you raise a ton of cash!
Here's hoping. You should pester your local independent to do something similar, would be great to see other venues pick up the idea and do something too.
Will do my best to attend! Love that DVD so much, only watched it the other day. Love it when Ben Stiller and Donald Glover (!) pop up.
Was totally gutted upon hearing it. Saw them only once at connect festival a few years back (they were pretty much the main reason for getting tickets) and they fucking blew the place apart, absolutely loved it! Like other folk have mentioned feel like a bit of my childhood has been taken away.
From the sounds of it as well he was one of the good guys. RIP MCA!! :(
