Kanye West Production Poll: RESULTS
Thanks to all involved, we got 10 ballots total for this, not a bad start for this sort of thing. There's a few tracks I wish i would have lobbied for in hindsight, but oh well, Ill complain later :) Theres definitely some tracks in the top 50 that I don't really care for at all so get be ready to defend.

Kanye West
Jay-Z
Mariah Carey
We had a three way tie for the 50th spot so I will lump them all together.
nvrmnd
Thissing my votes
Though havidng checked, blame game apparently wasn't in my top 30, oops
haha,
I was hoping we would just talk about why we picked what we picked underneath it, lets get some discussion up in here.
50. MARIAH CAREY - STAY THE NIGHT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_sdNXpE9Ck
I actually ranked this pretty high
I love the upright bass on it. It really is just a simple, sweet and effortless track. Great vocal performance by Mariah too, very addicting singalong hook.
I love this one!
Totally forgot to put it on my list, will teach me for doing it in a hurry. The upright bass sample is totally what makes it, lovely interplay with the piano.
had to rearrange my list a few times to make sure this made it to a decent placing
the bass is what does it for me too. I used to hate Mariah too, so it was a nice surprise to find how quickly this one started to grow on me
50. KANYE WEST - BLAME GAME
(f. John Legend)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMUhsUCmJHc
Martial drums ftw, great piano too.
Cool with all the different vocals panning back and forth in the middle bit, probably what puts this track over the edge, but I still didn't vote for it.
yeah, this.
Think the way the vocals sound is part of what makes the chris rock bit actually good and worth repeated listens, genuinely has the feel of a phone recording and is a part of the song as opposed to an unfunny skit.
Sample deployed really well, great drums
That piano continuing with the ridiculous Chris Rock skit is so wonderfully self-loathing
In a weird way I think it encompasses the whole album better than any other individual moment on it.
OVERRATED.
I actually think Richard's piano is a bit cloying.
opposite for me
Avril 14th is on of my favourite songs ever, so I just can't really listen to this properly. I'm all for sampling, but it works better when it's something I don't know/love to bits in it's original form
Thought this might be higher.
Love the Aphex Twin sample, think it fits the mood of the song perfectly- and those strings in the background!
Kanye's first verse on this is also my favourite on the album- rare to see him sound this vulnerable:
"On the bathroom wall I wrote I'd rather argue with you than to be with someone else.
I took a piss and dismissed it like 'fuck it' and I went and found somebody else.
Fuck arguing or harvesting the feelings yo, I'd rather be by my fucking self.
Till about 2am and I call back and I hang up and I start to blame myself.
Somebody help."
50. JAY Z & KANYE WEST - NEW DAY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APio7f0vvJk
waaaaat
really don't like this song
i hope made in america isn't on this list, surely not
yeah, pretty *boring imo
*sorry for using that word
I can see the appreciation for what's been done,
it's audacious, probably outrageous and it works....but just doesn't emotionally engage me.
I always thought that RZA got the production credits for this song?
Who picked this?!
Such a boring beat. I know Kanye's schtick is using obvious samples but this is so so so oversampled and the stupid vocoder effect totally strips it of any emotional content.
this is number 3 in my list.
i like the pause in the beat as jay comes in.
to me the vocoder makes the sample fresh, turning nina mournful, works well with the foot-dragging beat.
some clever use of the sample for back and forth between kanye and nina. best one...
kanye- and i'll never let him leave his college girlfriend and get caught up with the groupies in the whirlwind
nina- breeze driftin on by
kanye- and i'll never ever let him hit the telethon
whirlwind/ breeze/ hurricane is good song construction.
49. CAM'RON - DIPSET FOREVER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbCoKynxk9I
i like it
didn't vote for it i don't think, i struggle with a lot of kanye's chipmunk stuff now, sounds quite dated
Agree w the chipmunk point,
but some of it still works, like this where the sample is just so constant that it is more of a texture than an intermittent annoyance.
i know what you mean
it's got a good groove
This is one of mine
and I'd like to think more than just nostalgia influenced my vote (although 2004 / 2005 was some happydays with great soundtracks).
What can I say? I just love the sample and I wanted to have another Chipmunk sample that isn't Through the Wire on my list as for a while there it was Kanye's signature sound. Ok, maybe it's been overdone now but I still think it's a genius calling card - instantly recognisable, it works and in a lot of cases adds or improves on the original.
I also really like the bass, it propels the song forward and fills in the gaps.
hahaha, that's not a capital 'C' Chipmunk the artist! But chipmunk sped up vocals as borrowed from Crispin above!
lol I understood it as such anyway.
It was a good calling card for him and really stamped his sig on everything w/out some nonsense DJ callout.
oh man, top 10 track for me
I LOVE the chipmunk effect here, in the verses it's got so much vibrato on it that it just sounds like a synth line or something.
Also like how laid back and cool it is, that's something that links quite a few of my fav Kanye tracks together
48. DMX - DOGS OUT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgMKziYUTQI
YEAH
come on guys, 48s no place for this
Forgot about it myself :(
Your high ranking of it got it to place though so ^5
47. KANYE WEST - WE DON'T CARE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP4cm5ZB050
Can I just:
http://open.spotify.com/track/0GFuSxD2j9GJScA3EVTO69
The horns on We Don't Care are so perfectly placed. Especially the echoey ones that blurt out. Love the cornball hook on this too.
given how many solo Kanye tracks I included
no idea how I managed to miss this one out. Bad move on my part, this is sweet
Surprised this didn't come higher
love this so much, THOSE HORNS
Completely forgot to vote for this.
Reminds me of being 13 again when I used to spin College Dropout on repeat. Used to get well excited when this came on after that intro skit.
'UH KANYE COULD I TALK TO YOU FOR A MINUTE?'
Happier times.
46. COMMON - THE CORNER
(f. The Last Poets)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mnKNr2Tiq8
I forgot to vote but this would have been top five for me.
Thought it would have ranked much higher
The drums are good on this.
Awesome drop too.
Think I ranked this one fairly high.
It's the song that introduced me to Common, and subsequently Dilla, so will always be a favourite.
It's definitely got a Dilla vibe on the beat too, with the prominent drums and chopped vocal sample.
45. THE MADD RAPPER - GHETTO
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvgd_iVviXQ
Top 10 for me.
(f. Raekwon & Carl Thomas)
havent heard this before
sounds great
Freddie Gibbbs and Mikkey Halsted
did good work to the beat last year as well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb_mR1cIyj4
Another one I forgot!
44. RICK ROSS - LIVE FAST AND DIE YOUNG
(ft. Kanye West)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZocrHzjjwVU
YES.
disappointed/surprised this is relatively low.
AND I WANNA SHOW YOU HOW YOU ALLL LOOK LIKE BEAUTIFUL STARS
Very triumphant with the blazing horns.
This is one of my favorites
The drums are out of control, and it has a beautifully cheesy hook.
Mad @ u for not participating.
I've been fucking up
I accept the rebuke. I'll probably mark all the picks I would've done somehow.
Its cool man, was just messin.
Feel-good shit.
Holiday music. Glad it made the cut.
43. ALICIA KEYS - YOU DON'T KNOW MY NAME
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_1Sh0BnHr8
This song makes me very happy inside.
Fo' sure.
Used to love this album, one of the first R&B things I got into.
This was the start of the triple-whammy of 'You Don't Know My Name', 'If I Ain't Got You' and 'Diary' with Tony Toni Tone. The production of all three of them blends together so well.
How is is this so low down?
One of my favorite R&B tunes of all time.
genuinely have never heard this before.
shouldve done more research. this is properly amazing, one of my third listen in a row. best alicia keys track ive heard by a distance
^good typing.
Love the video too cos i'm a soppy fuck.
http://youtu.be/_ST6ZRbhGiA Alicia & Mos both looking fine
Yeah its really just sweetness all the way around.
42. CAM'RON - DEAD OR ALIVE
(f. Juelz Santana)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq72XE_uX44
41. TALIB KWELI - GET BY
vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVtpXvzzXiA
song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WEqr1zDq5s
See compare the Nina sampling on this to New Day
about a million times more creative, works so well with the drums.
Number 41
should be waaaay higher...
also, I'm pretty sure that New Day is a RZA beat that Yeezy fucked around with a bit.
Forgot about this one (I think)- shouldn't have rushed the list!
Great production. He perfected that breezy, feel-good piano sampling stuff around this time definitely. This song fits in well with Dilated People's 'This Way'.
is this link not working for anyone else?
Worked for me!
Here's the overall list again if you didn't see it in the other thread:
http://open.spotify.com/user/theshipment/playlist/3CepWmP536iOi54JaGzUGx
thankee!
also, just to check
did my submission make it in in time? Cos I know how very, very late it was ...
Yeah man, gotcha.
Sorry I forgot to send confirmation. Hopefully didn't forget anyone, I got:
jaguar pirate
thought dreams
nestor
crispin alexander
el goodo
subbero
shipment
coja
coolerthanTV
furryfan
awesome, cheers
pretty sure i'm not really qualified to give opinions on this stuff though
Nah man,
qualified schmalified, its all in good fun. Ist good to read the reasons people picked whatever they did.
40. KANYE WEST - STRONGER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0tLN22mMlU
quite surprised this featured.
same here
as much as the hook is "memorable" I've never actually wanted to listen to this
still think it's great
so simple but it just works
Yeah, another 'who the fuck picked this one' lol
Yeah totally, but
at the same time I completely get the appeal.
I did!
Don't think i put it very high, but it's still great.
This is an anthem man, guaranteed to get a party going no matter what. I guess the Daft Punk loop gets kind of repetitive, but I like the way he builds the chorus up with the synths, then just drops everything out for the catchy hooks/ lines. The synth breakdown in the last 30 seconds or so is sweet too.
39. KANYE WEST - DIAMONDS FROM SIERRA LEONE (Remix)
(ft. Jay-Z)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do3iJ6DWvpQ
Would've been top 10 for me.
I'm not sure there's one Ye produced post-Late Reg solo beat as good as this.
love how dramatic this is.
another cool pause in the beat as jay comes in, like on new day.
38. MOBB DEEP - THROW YOUR HANDS (IN THE AIR)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y7MuG-X6KQ
just missed out for me
but that guitar/violin(??) interplay is genius
Its a pretty simple beat all around
but I like the paranoid vibe when it switches at about 2:30
37. KANYE WEST - SO APPALLED
(Ft. RZA, Jay-Z, Pusha T, Swizz Beatz & Cyhi the Prynce)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JztZETJ4SaQ
Meh.
I only voted for one song off MBDTF
and it didn't make the cut.
Devil in a New Dress?
Not produced by Kanye
otherwise would have been in my top 5
Oh really? Didn't know that.
About as typical a Kanye beat as anything on the album and it's not even his!
Cant say yet ;)
not too surprised
but this was my #2
the beat sort of sounds like what they were trying to do on 'run this town' except properly sinister. i admit there are some weak spots: jay, and cyhi is just terrible. but i LOVE RZA's bit at the end, YOU KNOW THAT SHIT IS, FUCK-IN-RID-ICK-AH-LUS. if it was just general kanye i would rate it a bit lower but i think the beat is incredible, so here it is.
i guess i'm totally alone on this one :(
nope. love this tune
Yeah I had this as well
That Jay-Z line about The Dark Knight in this is my least favourite point on the whole album
Makes me cringe my arse off.
Cyhi the Prynce's verse more than makes up for it though.
Even worse than
"I rape and pillage your village woman and children, everybody wanna know what my Achilles heel is... LOOOVE... I don't get enough of it"?
Cos, y'know, that's really bad.
Oh man yea, his bars on that are fucking awful
Listening to them LITERALLY THIS MINUTE as well weirdly.
when he says LOOOVE
there is a palpable awkwardness. Nicki Minaj saves the day tho
Worst bit on that track is the line about
'pussy' and 'sarcophagus'. Do love it overall though.
Also Pusha-T is fucking great on it (as he is on anything really)
36. KANYE WEST - TOUCH THE SKY
1 first place vote
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwhkArCziq8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev6VEQFWonw
Just Blaze, no?
Yeah man, forgot to cross check and just copied and pasted votes!
whoops, might could submit another one then. Luckily we had 3 tied at number 50 so we have some wiggle room I guess.
oh man i feel silly now
I just went off of what was in the Spotify playlist, can't believe I put something ineligible in the top spot
To be fair, if it was actually produced by him
it would be right up there, which is just a testament to how great Just Blaze is.
Flashing Lights often catches people out too, also not a Yeezy beat.
Yeah I never noted FL as off limits and said anything
in the wiki list is fair game (minus co-productions) so it may just show up.
always liked the video
not much into the song. doesn't really do anything new with a sample that's been sampled to death.
(i realise you could say the same about 'stronger' but whatevs)
whaaaaat?!
This was a no-brainer for #1 for me - the ultimate horn sample, the beat in the verses really bounces and it's got some of my favourite lines from Kanye. Plus Lupe's guest spot is pretty on-point.
I just ... I don't know what to think :/
maybe
but why is obvious necessarily a bad thing? If it's one of the better uses of that sample then that shouldn't really matter.
Also the track makes me grin so much that it becomes kind of hard to think about the specifics of why I like it, I just want to hear it over and over
in the original thread,
in the post i had deleted for blurting out my 30, i said watch out for non-kanye beats and gave this song as an example. thought about writing that bit again. oh well, all good fun.
35. JAY Z & KANYE WEST - OTIS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkx3CaBnrz8
wut?
i...don't understand
for a production list? otis?
Yeah its poor all around imo.
Video is super awesome though.
I don't know how to type the sound of someone doing a blow off noise
But that.
HATE this track.
: D I'll own up
Cant believe this made it, cos it was low enough down on my list for it not to have had an impact alone, another couple of people must have included it, which is a pleasant surprise.
But I genuinely really like this. Not the first time it's been done but love the arrogance and sheer cojones just to use a sample like this, at a meta level just using displays more bravado than you ever could with the lyrics. I think the way they cut and play with it before the actual track kicks in is quite interesting/fun and I really like the way the piano is used to build up to it. I think they just about pull it off, and more hip-hop sounding like this would be absolutely horrific.I hate to think what this would have sounded like in someone else's hands.
one of the better tracks on Watch The Throne imo
(pretty sure I didn't this this tho)
Props for owning up.
same here
made it into my top 20. I love cut up vocal samples but this one works even better than most, since you get to hear the original, untouched version at the start for comparison.
Also "They ain't see me cause I pulled up in my other Benz, last week I was in my other other Benz" never fails to raise a smile
I can't listen to this because I love the original sample too much.
In fact it's possibly my favourite song ever.
Every time they chop and cut it up I just find myself wanting to scream 'TRY A LITTLE TENDERNEEEEEESSSSSS!'
34. KANYE WEST - MONSTER
(ft. Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Justin Vernon, and Nicki Minaj)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ona42jz8w0k
the video :D
^ this was meant for can't tell me nothing
33. KANYE WEST - CAN’T TELL ME NOTHING
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2bCc0EGP6U
Always like this.
Kanye doing southern rap sounds good here. The rolling bass basically is shipment cat nip.
Hmm
one of my favourite beats on the album, but it's clearly mostly DJ Toomp's work.
*Last moan about production credits, I promise.
Yeah gtfo with that stuff ;}
i love the verses
but the hook is kinda lame to me, really drags
great use of jeezy here,
so odd.
32. MOS DEF - SUNSHINE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi6OZqqjeAE
beat's nice,
shuffling and skipping.
Love this.
On an album full of great production it really holds it own.
fix
31. TRINA - DO YOU WANT ME?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRruKFjVKqo
So good.
Nice
i hadn't heard this before.
Bathgate lol... wasn't he meant to be the next big thing like 13 years ago? I remember hearing his shelved debut would have put Just Blaze and Yeezy together well before The Blueprint
Ha, maybe,
hadn't really heard of him outside of this.
really earworm,
very happy for it to stay.
Hadn't heard this before.
Glad I have now. Got a Diddy/ Bad Boy feel to it definitely- and few people do pop/R&B better. On repeat listens already.
Rapper sounds like some poor man's Jay and Mase hybrid though.
30. KANYE WEST - ADDICTION
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba-6niOoR_U
Yeeeeeah!
This got number 3 for me, but in hindsight would have been my No.1, especially as i've now discovered my No.1 wasn't even a Yeezy beat.
Love the Ella Fitzgerald sample:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqjKOalcI10
The drums are also fantastic- the best he's ever done for me. The cymbals just drift in and out at different volumes. Then the hand-claps come in at just the right time, and suddenly fucking bongos just appear out of nowhere. Bongos! Top work.
Great lyrics too.
How does this work?
Also Monster should've been higher.
Here's how it started:
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4334223
29. KANYE WEST - GONE
1 first place vote
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc65hFCls8E
(ft Cam'ron & Consequence)
Love this track
Would have been on my list had I voted
Late Orchestration version is fucking amazing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3KOywRHKgg
went to the hammersmith show of
late registration tour, did a bone-rattling, hard as they come run-through of crack music. next minute, dude's skipping around to a-ha take on me. kinda summed a brother up- bananas.
This was my number 1
adore this beat
Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit another one I forgot!
Love this beat too. The strings are just perfect.
28. KANYE WEST - HEARD EM SAY
(ft. Adam Levine)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elVF7oG0pQs
Another one I didn't expect anyone else to vote for.
\o/
Decent beat, piano sound is absolutely nailed in this one.
Few things I really like about this:
- that weird farty bass synth sound
- adam levine vocals are perfect for this
- the coda
farty base sound haha
i just love how bouncy the beat is
adds something to an otherwise ultra-mellow track
Only have time to do 5 today,
will resume top 25 on Monday.
27. SCARFACE - IN COLD BLOOD
1 first place vote
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F19n3ZCL6KU
My 1st place.
I had to make sure it placed!
Its just so bouncy.
Bass line is perfect. Love that moment where he drops the beat to add some choir and piano just before bringing it back.
does this mean 'Guess Who's Back'
will be higher?
Wish I'd voted, that'd be my number 1.
Leading into 'In My Block', maybe one of my favourite three-track successions from any album (feel The Fix as a whole meanders a bit too much to be a classic)
Never heard this before
It's ace
26. JAY Z - ENCORE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IC6m8M3Iw_k
i'm a sucker for a good brass sample
the beat's pretty busy and interesting too. Also one of the few times that Jay-Z doesn't somewhat irritate me
:o
Man you gotta go back and listen to early career Jay! Take your pick up through The Blueprint (minus Dynasty)
I know, I know
I will, I will. I've just never been a fan of any of his guest spots, which always makes me feel like he's over-rated. I'll try and put that aside though
25. KANYE WEST - LOVE LOCKDOWN
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZwMX6T5Jhk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcjkkBtXgIc
24. JAY Z - TAKEOVER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nfcKfVYCok
24?
Mental
I like this tune, mostly because Jay kills it.
But I don't rate the beat at all, probably because I hate the doors.
Im exactly the same, minus the Doors hate.
But yeah the beat always kind of plodded along to me without ever doing anything. I like some of the details in there but like you said, Its Jay that makes this song imo.
always prefered ether,
even reckon the beat is better.
23. LIL WAYNE – LET THE BEAT BUILD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvhOVkH-2z4
Another co-produc I was too lazy to omit, sorry.
Oh really?
Damn
Its a great beat tho indeed.
Isn't this co-produced by someone else though?
Like Kanye's the main producer and then someone else is the co-producer
Yeah DJ Toomp
but I think its the either way around, whatever though.
dayum, thought this wasn't gonna be allowed
would have made top 10 for me in that case, I think Kanye's at his best when he's using really soulful samples like this
I counted your vote for this, btw.
And by counted I mean
that you had left out a number 6 or 7 vote or something and I plugged it in there since you stated your love for it in email you sent, I took some creative liberty, it worked out I think.
you're a smart one you
I left this out cos it was a co-produce.
Would have been top 10 otherwise. Love it.
The sample is great- Eddie Kendricks 'Day by Day', check it out! Can't post a YouTube link as it's not working in my phone.
legit kanye beat, deezle gets a co-production credit
according to wiki. the only beat not allowed so far is touch the sky. been a few joint productions, but they're allowed in the rules.
badass how the beat is teased in here, taking ages and even longer for the proper drop, really confident.
I've never really got the love for this
like a good chunk of Tha Carter III tbh
Carter 3 is loads of fun.
I like about half of it
But not as much as I like Carter II, or Drought III, or Dedication II
This does my head in, and Weezy's fighting for space with that sample the whole time. Just not for me I guess.
I'd take a Wayne album that I like half of
at this point :/
Haha, that we can agree on
22. KEYSHIA COLE - I CHANGED MY MIND
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbE1qz8wktQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBKM0zn4394
Glad this made it pretty high, guess I wasn't the only one to vote for it.
I love those clicky handclap sounds with the strings & piano and it's cool how it switches up on the middle 8 with the synths. A lot of Kanye's beats are just a few great samples looped up, which is cool, but this different which is why I like it. Wish he'd made more straight up R&B tunes like this.
I think your
campaigning for this gave it some legs amongst voters. Never really paid too much attention to it myself until you called it out. good work.
23. STATE PROPERTY - GOT NOWHERE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmnFNp9rG58
this is off the chain,
got nowhererrerrrrrrrrrrrrr rre. floaty strings, flute, elastibass, horn crescendo. yes.
20. THE GAME - DREAMS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTSzVDbXUJ0
Only 20???
number 2 on my list. I think if this was attached to a better rapper than the game this would be a lot more popular, the 2001 lyric in particular makes me cringe.
Incredible beat, one of the most atmospheric use of sample ever. Love the kinda HO-HA sound thats made by the way it's cut, reminds me of the sound sonic makes when he gets an air bubble.
especially when 2001 was released in 1999 :/
Love this beat, maybe prefer Wouldn't Get Far, but it's a close call.
Top 5 for me, expected it to be higher than 20.
I loved the Documentary when it came out A lot of the tracks sound a little dated to me now as my hip hop tastes have changed, but this one will always be a classic!
so smooth, maybe the peak of that kanye phase,
refined all his tics- strings, bongos, soul voice sample. not got a problem with game on this.
Grav - Down to Earth
Thought i'd put this in just as an interesting aside; doubt it made anyone's vote - Kanye's first published beat, dating back to 1996. Dude sure worked hard to get where he is.. was also getting beats on albums aged 19 which makes me feel sick.
the link:

Nice.

The RZA (1991)
1. this remix of an old school GZA song.. interesting to hear Wu-Tang meeting proper old school type rap.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b6F4hx8QK4
2. in 1991 he also co-produced this amazing early solo single. to be honest i think it was all downhill from here. Wu-Tang meets... Will Smith?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDT8OOkS_dc
and as a final aside.
Kanye's first ever verse, on the aforementioned Grav album.

19. JAY Z & KANYE WEST - NIGGAS IN PARIS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfM_wS7qYfY
i can't even remember if i like it
heard it so many times against my will, it just sort of....exists.
Nah, its a certified undeniable jam and you know it.
theShipment's certified undeniable jams
is a classic youtube series in the making.
better yet
teach an undeniable jams class at college
though i wouldn't much care for the 'crazy in love is overrated' assignment, you MONSTER
Haha. Well, each professor has to have their
unpopular 'WTF is he on about' stance on something.
Basically the best tune either Kanye or Jay have done for years.
The bit where the beat switches up with the white noise and the piano comes in is totally inspired. Don't want to go on about production credits but this definitly feels more Hit-Boy than Yeezy.
no doubt
Hit-Boy sent them all the files for his beat, then Ye and team reconstructed in in Paris. I guess that's kind of like sampling, to the extreme. I think he does this a lot now days.
It's those little touches that I imagine came from Ye tbh.
put this low on my list
cos I appreciate it, but don't like it all that much. Might grow on me but there are much better songs on WTT for me, though this is about the beats and for that it deserves som credit
Also, I can't separate that slow, octave-down effect from ASAP Rocky now, it's starting to grate
so ridiculously huge
would be top 3 for me i didnt class it as a hit-boy one.
another great hit-boy track:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq1POyzBNF0
was a shame theraflu was so weak
I actually think Hit-Boy provides a decent beat
Ye drops the ball on that one.
18. KANYE WEST - GOLDDIGGER
(ft. Jamie Foxx)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vwNcNOTVzY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59qR4kRdhLE
thought this'd be higher
just cos i can imagine it featuring on everyone's list at least somewhere
Not on my list!
Obviously the songs great but I don't think the beat is anything special.
17. LUDACRIS - STAND UP
(ft Shawnna)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZG7IK99OvI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIZ3fvuo840
Watch out cos my diamonds are reckless
feels like a midget is hanging from my necklace!
Banger.
So good I got the words wrong
I hope Lucifer is in this
666
last one b4 lunch coming up,
Ima get through 11 today.
16. COMMON - BE INTRO
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk1fXbzDt8c
had to be up there. i love this intro.
In hindsight, it's pretty ridiculous that everyone saw this album as a big comeback after just one(fairly interesting) miss step with Electric Circus. The last 3 records have been toss.
Yeah it was pretty good at the time
but hasn't really aged partic well. Also, his album from last year was a return to... haha yeah hate that return to form nonsense, but really it was much better than I expected.
hmm yeah to call that one complete toss is pretty harsh
but he seemed on a creative roll those days, now he's limited to producing some decent MOR hip hop every couple of years. if only we could hook him up with dilla again :(
thought i was chucking a vote away with this.
put a smile on ya face, aural vitamin d music.
my number 2
I love how the different layers are introduced one at a time, really gives it some momentum. Add to that the fact that's it's got a plain amazing hook and we have a winner
I had this at 2 as well
Yeah I wasn't expecting this to be on
anyones ballot tbh.
cos you don't rate it
or cos you thought it would kind of fly under the radar?
Under the radar.
I like it, had no idea it was revered.
woah
wasn't expecting this this high.
But still, hard to say it's not deserving.
15. KANYE WEST - RUNAWAY
(ft. Pusha T)
full movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jg5wkZ-dJXA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7_jYl8A73g
listening all this kanye
makes me realise how good his piano sounds are. this might be best for that. real epic, auteur ish, rapper/ singer/ producer. some uplifting and sinister sounds, what is that garbling at the end? is he brainwashing us?
i actually love that garbling
it's indulgent but i find it oddly affecting.
14. SLUM VILLAGE - SELFISH
(ft. Kanye West & John Legend)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW0BVwt8Mig <3 the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yI73ecE59M
catchiest song, always going through my head.
best hook. got a feeling there isn't gonna be anything off the first john legend album here, shame as it's ace. a couple of tunes just missed out for me.
13. JAY Z - NEVER CHANGE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Uvkco6eumo
my highest placing jay-z track.
maybe my favourite track on the blueprint too
glad this made it,
total class. love that brush-shuffle sound. subtle, but adds so much.
12. JAY Z - LUCIFER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8h0d00gEh4
Guess Who's Back
top ten please. Then I won't regret not submitting a list.
must be top 11...
I had it in my top 10
assuming I can't be the only one, although now I think I over-rated it a touch
11. KANYE WEST - SPACESHIP
1 first place vote
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGM6N0qXeu4
Listening to this now
I'm regretting I didn't put it higher
had written off the chances of this making it,
getting some good surprises. 20-11 is super, would've been happy with that as the top 10.
someone said black people make outer space type art- funkadelic, sun ra, because of residual stuff from slavery. pretty patronising maybe, but sounded interesting to me. black atlantic business. this song makes me think of that. great song, best kanye lyrics. chorus is incredible, love the shorten the register up daydreaming.
One of my fans favs for sure.
Lol @ fans favs
Should just be favs. Not so smart phones.
that was me!
damn guys the closer this got the more i thought 'ok spaceship will be 1'
that unusual time signature is really a stroke of genius, the bass groove is his best, and it's just the one song where all the early kanye styles come together and it's so cool.
i know this isn't the point but kanye's first verse is also prob his best, something so commanding about it. i regularly have the 'yeah i stole, never got caught!' line in my head.
Def one of Kanyes better concepts and verses.
never heard this before
would probably hav made my top 10 comfortably, this is so soulful
it's on College Dropout? WTF?
no idea how I missed it then, foolish
btw
this thread rules
10. JAY Z - HEART OF THE CITY (AIN’T NO LOVE)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QePjIIBI-sI
sunny day music,
so cool with jay and the b-line together.
9. KANYE WEST - ALL OF THE LIGHTS
(ft. every musician ever)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAfFfqiYLp0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJos0ifG7T0
This would've been my number one I think
It's absolutely colossal.
Really grandiose and over the top and all,
but I still like it and always have.
It's why I love it
Was laying in bed for my first ever listen of MBDTF and this genuinely made me sit bolt upright.
yeah, so I massively underrated this
that beat is crazy
8. Kanye West - Flashing Lights
1 first place vote
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ila-hAUXR5U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1GjgEaLnYw
This was mine.
Didn't realise it wasn't a Ye beat, otherwise Addiction would have been my number one.
Just love the atmosphere of this song. Feels like the sort of thing that should be blazing out whilst you drive through a deserted city at night. It's just about the only song off of Graduation I listen to regularly now, maybe because it sounds like a Late Registration cut- which I think is Yeezey's best production wise.
Was hyped when this turned up in GTA. Rolling down a fake Times Square in a stolen beamer with the police chasing you whilst this is cranked up- probably the best thing about that game.
Video's not bad too. Baby got back :D
this is a kanye beat, with eric hudson.
doesn't sound like a late registration cut to me, beat snaps much more than anything off that.
hope keys n krates play this when i see them...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OY2778VNCGU
prefer it to the badbadnotgood version.
I guess it's the strings
but to me this sounds like it would slide in perfectly on LR. The drums go a bit harder though, your'e right.
7. SCARFACE - GUESS WHO’S BACK
(ft. Jay-Z , Beanie Sigel & Kanye West)
2 first place votes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIS3KouPdgM
All about the bass line.
love those twinkling synths
My number one.
The melody is just such an irresistible earworm,I had to make sure it got a decent placing
Yeah
I like it, what can I say
6. JAY Z - IZZO (H.O.V.A)
1 first place vote
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh4gck89uj0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn7Nx6eR_GE
my 1st place vote hasnt turned up yet.
Getting excited for the possibility of it being #1, but also worrying that it might not even end up here.
5. KANYE WEST - ALL FALLS DOWN
1 first place vote
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kyWDhB_QeI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihpcN_vns0k
how crisp is that snare?
also some of his best lines, Lexus/Alexis gets me every time
aw man, there it is.
Hadn't listened to the first 3 kanye albums in years before MBDTF / going to see him live, and in the set this, probably alongside golddigger stood out just as ridiculously huge songs that made everyone go mental.
Think some of the verses are amongst his best, and I love the syleena johnson </lauryn hill> hook but for me the whole production is just perfect.
Video is so good too.
I mean, well, yeah Ive had a huge crush on Stacey Dash since waaay back.
Always cracks me up when Common just turns up at the end as a security guard
4. KANYE WEST - THROUGH THE WIRE
1 first place vote
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=med3gizHKCk
this song and video
is really memorable to me. I remember the buzz when Kanye first arrived as this kind of super-smart, preppy-dresses, conscious rapper who produced amazing beats, seemed to draw a line between Jay-Z and A Tribe Called Quest, and had had to dig away at jay-Z to get noticed as a rapper. then he finally arrived with this track that drove everyone crazy, had an interesting back story and a pretty captivating video. I think 'Through the Wire' is one of the most visceral musical moments of my youth.
preppy-dressed
preppy dresses might have made him popular with a much more niche audience.
Yeah I think Kanye is in an *important*
figure for rap, he helped bridg the gap between the underground boombap scene and the pop rap scene with self-awareness and made it fun too. That lame-ass war still rages on, but it was substantially knocked back due to his efforts.
this is one of those tracks
you don't hear for four years and then by the time the first verse kicks in you remember all the words.
i drink a boost for breakfast
an ensure for dessert
somebody ordered pancakes
i just sip the sizzurp
that right there could
drive a sane man beserk
not to worry Mr. H to the Izzo's
back to wiz-erk
so dope.
The doctor said I had blood-clots
But I ain't Jamaican man!
3. KANYE WEST - JESUS WALKS
v1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8AyHupByuU
v2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYF7H_fpc-g&ob=av2n
v3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AXbK-i45TU
BP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNzDO8eO220
Ooh
Thought this would be number one...
Thought this might be number one
2. KANYE WEST - SLOW JAMZ
(ft. Twista, Jamie Foxx)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5dd0D-qA-E
wasn't expecting this so high
not in my top 20, but a tune no doubt. especially since this wasn't anywhere
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVpIOvpM5eU&feature=related
now, if what I think is number one isn't, i'll be stumped.
like someone's playing juke on the bongos,
i'd think someone was odd if they didn't like this.
someone, someone, like, like,
need to switch up my vocab game. ahh well, is late.
1. MR HUDSON - SUPERNOVA
(ft. Kanye West)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkZt7tZl2AE
Thanks to all those who took part. A fitting winner, i'm sure we all agree.
:''D
tell me I just got punk'd ...
Here we go...
1. CAM’RON - DOWN AND OUT
(ft. Kanye West, Syleena Johnson)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YHu0sOM5N4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjVGft5wqSc
well how about that
didn't expect it to do that well
<3
Me neither
Didnt get any 1st place votes either!
Yeah its weird huh?
I guess no one here would say its his best beat, must of just got pretty decent ratings from everyone. I mean how can you not like this tune? Love the way he chops the vocal sample in an almost Todd Edwards vibe and the drums hit hard.
V surprising number one, but it HAD to show up
ALSO... WHERE WAS TWO WORDS? YOU GUYS SERIOUS? smoke a big j and shove this on, and tell me *this* beat doesn't deserve to be in the top 50. i think if anything these guys wasted it a bit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjrjFjsOeX0
OUR GIRLS IS THE MODELS
THEY COOCHIES THE JUICIEST
a few things
no new workout plan? weird.
also i think the best beat from watch the throne didn't make it, no church in the wild.
yeah, I don't like NCITW as a song that much
but that beat is so murky and odd, it's really engaging
when it came out I hated that song, and I had done for years
i was still a 'backpacker' when CD dropped, and somehow this was a commercial 'sell out' track to me. it stuck with me.
now i think it's wonderfully weird that he drops this crazy hoedown in the album which takes left turns all over the place. the last couple of minutes are glorious...
so basically what this sum reaffirms, apart from that Kanye is a fucking quality producer,
is that The College Dropout is basically unfuckwithable
sum?
dunno where that came from
College Dropout is great
Why didnt you join in, scrotum?
complaints time
no Lift-Off? Jeez and oh
i would put that up there as one of the worst things
everybody involved has taken part in
whaaaat?
could you elaborate a bit? Cos it's so obviously a good song to me that I find it hard to see what someone would dislike about it
i just find it unbelievably dull
it drags
I think this is a good example of
ugh had written a big post and its gone now :(
will have to write again later.
please do
also just realised
no we major
Great thread.
Cheers for doing this all Shipment. Another classic to go with the 90's Hip Hop joints and furryfans Dilla thread!
Thanks, was fun and all.
I will post more of the list in list form later today and give comments on some more tracks. Meetings and work and stuff taking over atm.
great work shipment,
glad you enjoyed it.
i enjoyed and found it interesting, defo prefer 20-11 to 10-1.
most surprised good life didn't make it, massive single and one of his best.
also shyne- more or less is easily the hardest joint kanye ever did, too much for dis softies? ;)
Enjoyed reading this
Apologies I never got around to contributing, big fan of Kanye as a producer as well!
Agreed with whoever said that this brings home how great College Dropout was prodcution-wise. Can't really argue with no1 either - would've been top5 for me.
What was your number 1 shipment?
#27
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4339845#r6739528
Scarface <3
How did the Truth by Beanie Sigel not make it?!
http://youtu.be/See0q6nZQZ8
I guess its pretty simple but what more do you need than a dope organ, some drums and a bassline?
51
!!
shipment,
what was the twisted fantasy joint you went for that didn't make it?
see me now was close to the cut for me, my second favourite off that album.
Dark Fantasy,
even though it just basically sounds like a blown out Wu beat, always hypes me up.
see me now isn't on the album
but it definitely should have been
Here's 51-75
51 Beanie Sigel - The Truth
52 Kanye West - Dark Fantasy
53 Kanye West - Drunk and Hot Girls
54 shyne - more or less
55 Common - The People
56 Jay Z & Kanye West - No Church In The Wild
57 Jay Z ft. Beyonce - Bonnie & Clyde
58 Dilated Peoples - This Way
59 Kanye West - Hey Mama
60 TI - Swagger Like us
61 Drake - Find Your Love
62 Jay Z & Kanye West - Illest Mother Fucker Alive
63 Kanye West - family business
64 Knoc’turn-al - Muzik
65 Trina ft. Ludacris - B R Right
66 Kanye West - We Major
67 Fabolous - Supa
68 glc- so real
69 John Legend - Used To Love U
70 Kanye West - Hell of a Life
71 Mr Hudson - Central Park
72 The Diplomats - Un Casia
73 Kanye West - good morning
74 Brandy ft. Kanye West - Talk About Our Love
75 Lil Wayne - Comfortable
That Shyne track is very cool,
have never really cared much for him as a rapper, but More or Less is great.
Bummed that B R Right didn't place, I had that pretty high up.
I thought Dilated People's 'This Way' would have made it.
Catchy as fuck and I love that Kanye verse. The production is great too, whistling flute sample all the way through and classic Kanye piano riffs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbo9QlcLcX8
I think maybe its just too close to Get By
or something?
disappointed Hey Mama, but especially
Dark Fantasy didnt make it. But overall I think the top 50 is a list we can be proud of.
Can I post a few of mine that didn't make the top 75?
Drake - Show Me A Good Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgeIUzE0EHI
Monica - Knock Knock
Love those chimes and how the track builds up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOPgTVUD0i0
The Game - Wouldn't Get Far
Just a jam.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwXoDVEJtIY
Jay-Z - This Can't Be Life
Dunno if it's because it's the first Yeezy beat I heard, but I still love this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ-tqRzenPQ
Kanye West - Street Lights
I guess the Mr Hudson thing might put people off... or Ye's singing. This is a great bit of production, if it was a Drake track people would lose their shit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrT9ooi-xUk
Twista – Overnight Celebrity
Those strings <3 . I actually prefer this beat to Slow Jamz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVpIOvpM5eU
Kanye West - Two Words
I can't believe no one else loves this. Ye would obviously go on to bring all kinds of orchestral & choral arrangements into his songs, but so many of them sound overproduced to me. This is perfect.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjrjFjsOeX0
Good list!
Street Lights is the only one I don't care much for on that. Actually was really surprised Overnight Celeb didn't make the list, I may like it better myself.
Yeah, I'm probably on my own with Street Lights.
I'm not particularly surprised/fussed that Love Lockdown was the only 808s beat to make it.
nah, i like street lights too,
just had a look back and mediamodia this'd me saying it was good in the original thread as well. so at least three of us.
surprised to see kanye good morning in 75th place (given the 2 in 50th place), even with 2 votes.
mine that didn't make the top 75 (be interested to see everyones)...
kanye- roses
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZOy6t1vVtE
highest placing non-charter for me and favourite on late registration. some of his stuff is attention grabbing and gets boring, this is a keeper, deep cut.
consequence/ kanye- getting out the game
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAwgz155fic
don't know why this wasn't massive, obvious sample, but well constructed song, drums are right.
consequence/ kanye- the good the bad the ugly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_sBhDTIx48
ain't anyone else into consequence? kanye sounds really comfortable with him, loose. great fit.
kanye- good life
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fOgF0xgoh4
didn't used to like this, was maybe hung up about pop music or something. what a dickhead, doesn't get more triumphant than this. check the drumslap and keysquiggle.
madd rapper- not the one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PmvUqofqP4
defo prefer this to ghetto, which made it. love the changes in pace, lean back business.
talib kweli/ kanye- in the mood
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBSGfKGGayE
like the playfulness with the samples.
kanye/ kweli/ common- get em high
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4SbYnNsTQA
prefer this to all falls down and jesus walks. coolest kanye joint, bump this in your car, yo.
Man, for real about Get Em High & In The Mood.
In the Mood is Kanye doing Dilla at his best imo, he chops that up so perfectly. Also with the chimes/xylophone textures and the trumpet stabs going into the 'hook' even tho there really isn't a hook.
Also from Talib is Guerrilla Monsoon Rap which to me is one of his simplest and hardest beats.
Get Em High is def one of his better productions, see also Breath in Breath Out, both kinda similarly buoyant.
This Can't Be Life just made it into my 30
listening to it again it could easily have been top 10 material, big oversight from me there
some of mine that missed the cut
Kanye/Jay-Z - Lift Off
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdQ0kueR2DU
I know the verses are pretty (very) crappy but the beat and Beyonce's hook are great, it *sounds* like a lift-off to me. Surprised to see how many people seem to dislike it on here
88-Keys - Nice Guys Finish Last
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLiZlPI6Fls
Such a catchy hook, always makes me want to move. Probably some of my favourite lyrics of any of the songs on my list too
Common - Forever Begins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyM1CMSM-vc&ob=av2n
Love the drums on this one, they sound so crisp and lively. Add the piano and the background sample and it adds up to one lush track
Common - Drivin' Me Wild
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6Mj6wPgQso
It's all about the drums for this one too, though I do love vocal samples like this one, where they just linger on one note for ages before they let it play out. Explaining it really badly, but it's the same thing Kanye does on Late, and kind of on Dipset Forever. Also "She was the type to watch Oprah and The Today Show, be on the treadmill like OK Go" - love it.
Kanye - Late
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26BvWCTpLIQ
Just love how lush this is, Kanye does smooth and soulful so well
Really surprised Comfortable was so low too, it's such a good beat and the Beyonce reference is a nice touch
Late is very good.
Common Forever Begins reminds me of (really crap youtube not quite right version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_13U4N2n0o
Both use 50 ways to leave your lover drums right?
that's a pretty awesome track
and I never noticed that with the drums, that's a pretty cool tidbit. The chords actually sound quite similar to the Common one too
