Okay, I've got Are We Not Men? We Are Devo! and Oh, No! It's Devo.
Do I NEED any of their other albums?
You need Something For Everybody because it's brilliant.
The further back you go with Devo, the better they get, and these two collections of early material are the fucking best. Lo-fi, creepy, demented, hilarious and balls-out brilliant.
Also, if you can find it, there's an early vinyl bootleg called Devonia which is jaw-dropping. Mostly selections from Are We Not Men and Duty Now For the Future, almost all superior versions.
Are We Not Men is hard not to like, but when you've developed a taste for the earlier Devo it's a bit polished & polite. Duty Now For the Future has some good tracks but the production is horrible - thin and weedy. Freedom of Choice is a nice balance between their weirdery and their pop sensibility, some great tracks and basically an early 80s classic. From there on it's all downhill.
Devo are one of the few bands where I listen more to the "best of" than any individual album though.
If only just to see where they went after lp #1. It's got a dead sound to it. I really do think the first three are essential Devo.
They'll sort you.
